  • This paper will explain the importance of using interactive prototyping tools in the HCI design process. The Future of HCI education project performed by ACM SIGCHI shows that students recognize that prototyping, especially paper prototyping and interactive prototyping, are both very important. Two widely-used prototyping tools in academy, Balsamiq and Oven, will be compared and rated by students according to their preferences. We choose the Balsamiq as our design tool because Oven can be designed on the web but applications cannot be designed directly on Mac or Windows. The Balsamiq tool will help you understand the task process of UI work and highlight the benefits of digital prototyping to test the execution of expected results in a fast fashion compared to high-level prototyping. We also present the outcome of this work through two case studies. In particular, the smart mirror project with voice recognition function shows the effectiveness of the proposed method as an example.

  • This study is intended to propose quality criteria and Web metrics for usability quality evaluation of multimedia Web sites. Recently, applications of the Web sites are not limited to the area of industry and operating as it integrates the new technology. Also as information super highway becomes common with development or network technology, multimedia Web site is on the rise due to various use of multimedia attributes. Therefore this study expands to apply HTML based Web site quality evaluation studied in Software engineering, HCI, Hypermedia to multimedia Web site, and suggests new metrics by integrating flash usability which is expanding its portion in multimedia Web site lately. The Web metrics proposed in this study are verified by heuristic evaluation from a group of expert. It analyses the results of quantitative and qualitative qualify evaluation on Web Award Korea by comparing the award-winning, high-quality Web site with non-winning Web sites. This study can be used to establish guideline for high-quality multimedia Web site development in the future.

  • In this paper, we describe CAMAR Companoin, a context-aware mobile AR system that provides a user-adaptive assistance with an augmented picture according to the user's context in smart space. It recognizes physical objects and tracks the movement of those objects with a camera embodied to a mobile device. CAMAR Companion observes a mobile user's context, which is sensed by various kinds of sensors in environments, and infers user preference for the content in the situation. It recommends multimedia content relevant to the user's context. It overlays selected content over associated physical objects and enables the user to experience the content in a user-centric manner. Furthermore, we have developed the prototype to illustrate how our system could be used for a mobile user's well-being care applications in smart home environments. In this application, we found that our system could perceive a user preference even though a user's context is changed dynamically, and then adapt the multimedia content with respect to the user's context effectively. As such, the proposed user-adaptive system has the potential to play an important role in developing customized user interfaces in mobile devices.

  • The needs for visualizing interactive multimedia contents on portable devices with realistic three dimensional shapes are increasing as new ubiquitous services are coming into reality. Especially in digital fashion applications with virtual reality technologies for clothes of various forms on different avatars, it is required to provide very high quality visual models over mobile networks. Due to limited network bandwidths and memory spaces of portable devices, it is very difficult to transmit visual data effectively and render realistic appearance of three dimensional images. In this thesis, we propose a compression method to reduce three dimensional data for digital fashion applications. The three dimensional model includes animation of avatar which require very large amounts of data over time. Our proposed method utilizes temporal and spatial coherence of animation data, to reduce the amount. By grouping vertices from three dimensional models, the entire animation is represented by a movement path of a few representative vertices. The existing three dimensional model compression approaches can get benefits from the proposed method by reducing the compression sources through grouping. We expect that the proposed method to be applied not only to three dimensional garment animations but also to generic deformable objects.

  • Hand gesture is one of the most popular communication methods in everyday life. In human-computer interaction applications, hand gesture recognition provides a natural way of communication between humans and computers. There are mainly two methods of hand gesture recognition: glove-based method and vision-based method. In this paper, we propose a vision-based hand gesture recognition method using Kinect. By using the depth information is efficient and robust to achieve the hand detection process. The finger labeling makes the system achieve pose classification according to the finger name and the relationship between each fingers. It also make the classification more effective and accutate. Two kinds of gesture sets can be recognized by our system. According to the experiment, the average accuracy of American Sign Language(ASL) number gesture set is 94.33%, and that of general gestures set is 95.01%. Since our system runs in real-time and has a high recognition rate, we can embed it into various applications.

  • This paper implemented the u-Healthcare Context Information System (HCIS) supporting ubiquitous healthcare by using location, health and titrating environment information collected from sensors/devices equipped in home for healthcare home service. The HCIS is based on the Distributed Object Group Framework (DOGF), a management model which can customize distributed resources, and manages various context information, applications and devices as a group in healthcare home environment, as one more logical units. Also, this system provides continuous healthcare multimedia service considering a resident's location using Mobile Proxy, and the healthcare context information through Context Provider to a resident in home. For verifying execution of our system, we implemented the seamless multimedia service based on resident's location and the prescription/advice and schedule notification/alarm service as healthcare applications in home. And we showed the executing results of healthcare home service by using service device existed in the residential space on which the resident is located according to the healthcare scenario.

  • In this paper, we present a FAES(a Facial Animation with Emotion and Speech) system for speech-driven face animation with emotions. We animate face cartoons not only from input speech, but also based on emotions derived from speech signal. And also our system can ensure smooth transitions and exact representation in animation. To do this, after collecting the training data, we have made the database using SVM(Support Vector Machine) to recognize four different categories of emotions: neutral, dislike, fear and surprise. So that, we can make the system for speech-driven animation with emotions. Also, we trained on Korean young person and focused on only Korean emotional face expressions. Experimental results of our system demonstrate that more emotional areas expanded and the accuracies of the emotional recognition and the continuous speech recognition are respectively increased 7% and 5% more compared with the previous method.

  • This paper detected the characteristics of motion vector to support efficient content -based video search of video. Traditionally, the present frame of a video was divided into blocks of equal size and BMA (block matching algorithm) was used, which predicts the motion of each block in the reference frame on the time axis. However, BMA has several restrictions and vectors obtained by BMA are sometimes different from actual motions. To solve this problem, the foil search method was applied but this method is disadvantageous in that it has to make a large volume of calculation. Thus, as an alternative, the present study extracted the Spatio-Temporal characteristics of Motion Vector Spatio-Temporal Correlations (MVSTC). As a result, we could predict motion vectors more accurately using the motion vectors of neighboring blocks. However, because there are multiple reference block vectors, such additional information should be sent to the receiving end. Thus, we need to consider how to predict the motion characteristics of each block and how to define the appropriate scope of search. Based on the proposed algorithm, we examined motion prediction techniques for motion compensation and presented results of applying the techniques.
