멀티미디어를 이용한 정보기술 교육의 학습 효과에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구 (An Empirical Study on Factors Influencing the Learning Results of Information Technology Using Multimedia)

  • Recently, the rapid development of information technology has brought enormous changes in education. Consolidation of communications and multimedia technologies are enabling the new educational paradigm such as distance learning and virtual education. Furthermore, many studies in the education engineering field report that teaching using multimedia technologies more enhances students' performance than the traditional instructor-teaching method. However, little research regarding the education using multimedia has been done in the MIS filed. None of multimedia-related studies could be found in the top-ranked MIS journals published in Korea for the last five years, and only a few studies were found even worldwide. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to investigate which features of multimedia software are most important to enhance the teaching results of students, From the previous research, we found out the specific features of the educational multimedia software which are considered to affect the students' performance, and defined the research variables related to those educational software features, And, based on the constructivism and motivation theory of the education engineering field, a theoretical research model and research hypotheses were developed. Perceived usefulness of the class and a student's perceived interests in the class were used as surrogate variables to measure teaching performance. Total 277 students participated separately in one of the two multimedia classes which have continued for three weeks. One was C programming language class and the other was multimedia CD-title development class. Each student listened for the multimedia session of the class using multimedia software and, at the end of the multimedia session, answered the survey questionnaire, The results of the study show that motivation to the class and the contents of education were statistically significant to the students' performance in the class. That implies, not only in the traditional instructor-teaching method but also in the multimedia class, that the contents of education itself and student's motivation to the class are most important to raise instructional results.

  • 본 논문은 페트리 넷 기반의 멀티미디어 프로그래밍 방법을 제안한다. 이를 위하여 멀티미디어 시나리오를 표현할 MPN(Multimedia Petri Net)을 정의하고, 또한 MPN을 분석하여 시나리오의 결함을 찾아낼 수 있는 방법을 소개한다. 멀티미디어 프로그램은 MPN을 해석하여 멀티미디어 시나리오를 재생한다. 이렇게 작성한 우리의 멀티미디어 프로그램은 정지, 빠른 재생 되감기, 빠른 되감기 등의 조작 기능을 제공한다. 멀티미디어 시나리오 모델링을 위해 페트리 넷을 이용한 사례는 존재하지만, 이들은 모두 시간적 동기화 분석을 위한 것으로, 멀티미디어 시나리오의 재생을 목적으로 사용된 사례는 아직 없다. 이에 반하여, MPN은 시나리오의 흐름은 물론 시나리오를 구성하는 데이터들의 정보까지도 모두 표현함으로써 재생에 필요한 모든 정보를 나타낼 수 있다.

  • 음성, 영상, 데이터와 같은 다양한 멀티미디어 서비스는 많은 대역폭과 실시간 처리가 필요하기 때문에 데이터의 지연과 손실에 민감한 특성을 가지고 있다. 따라서 네트워크의 흔잡 상황과 무선채널의 에러로 인한 데이터의 손실이 발생하여 사용자에게 QoS를 보장해주지 못하게 된다. 이러한 문제들을 해결하기 위해 멀티미디어 스트리밍 흐름에 속한 데이터 패킷의 중요도에 따른 차등적인 서비스로 멀티미디어의 품질을 개선하는 알고리즘의 연구가 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 무선손실이 발생했을 경우 IWFQ 알고리즘과 같이 동작하다가 멀티미디어 플로의 재생시간이 촉박할 때 우선적으로 채널을 할당하는 WMS-1(Wireless Multimedia Scheduling-1) 알고리즘과, 멀티미디어 플로에 우선권을 부여하고 프레임 유형에 따라 우선순위가 높은 프레임을 갖는 플로를 먼저 서비스하는 WMS-2(Wireless Multimedia Scheduling-2) 알고리즘을 제안한다. 기존의 알고리즘과의 비교를 통해 제안한 알고리즘의 멀티미디어 서비스 품질이 개선되었고 기지국의 큐 사이즈가 클수록 전체 서비스의 품질과 fairness가 향상된 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • Multimedia systems present information by various media, for example, video, sound, music, animation, movie, etc., in addition to the text which has long been used for conveying the information. Among many multimedia applications, the multimedia information retrieval systems commercialized in the forms of multimedia encyclopedia CD-ROMs, benefited from various media for their ability to present information in an efficient and complete way. But using several media, on the other hand, may cause end users' confusion and furthermore, poorly designed user interface often exacerbates the situation. In this study, the multimedia systems were studied from the standpoint of usability. The conceptual framework of the user interface of the multimedia system was newly defined. And 100 initial variables for user interface design of general multimedia systems were suggested through literature survey and expert opinions based upon the framework developed. Among various application areas, the multimedia information retrieval systems were chosen for investigation, and 36 variables particularly relevant to user interface of the multimedia information retrieval systems were selected. According to the sequential research strategy, the variables that were considered to be most important were finally selected through a screening stage. A part of selected variables were verified through a human factors experiment as the first step of sequential research. Based upon the result of the experiment, guidelines for user interface design were provided. For future study, the variables remained will be Investigated and the study will expand to another application areas.

온톨로지 기반의 멀티미디어 콘텐츠 검색 시스템 (The Multimedia Contents Search System based on Ontology)

  • 최근 멀티미디어 기술과 네트워크의 발전으로 멀티미디어 콘텐츠의 생성은 빠르게 늘어가고 있다. 그러나 이를 찾고 활용하는 기술은 부족하다. 이러한 문제를 보완하고 해결하기 위해 멀티미디어 콘텐츠를 위한 표준안들이 많이 있으나 멀티미디어 데이터 형식과 상호운용성을 표현하기에는 부족하다. 본 논문에서는 멀티미디어 콘텐츠를 상호 운용할 수 있도록 하는 온톨로지 기반의 콘텐츠 검색 시스템을 제시한다. 온톨로지는 MPEG-7의 MDS(Multimedia Description Scheme)와 같은 스키마 구조에 온톨로지 구축을 위한 규칙을 제시하여 구성한다. 이러한 온톨로지를 바탕으로 멀티미디어 데이터가 가지고 있는 연관성을 확장하여 의미론적 검색 시스템을 구축한다.

멀티미디어 정보시스템을 이용한 기업체 교육의 효과요인 도출을 위한 실증적 연구 (A Study on the Effects Factors of Multimedia Information Systems on Employee Education in Business Organizations)

  • The recent development of information technology in general and consolidation of communications and multimedia technology in particular have brought enormous changes in education and training methods in many business organizations. Numerous studies in the education engineering field report that teaching using multimedia technologies will more enhance the education/training performance than the traditional instructor-teaching method. However, in the management information systems field, few studies are found which directly investigated effects of multimedia technologies on education and training. None of multimedia-related studies can be found in the top-ranked MIS journals published in Korea for the last five years, and only a few stuides are found even worldwide. The major steps of the current research are as follows. First, in order to identify important factors constituting the effectiveness of multimedia systems, previous research related to the effectiveness of multimedia systems was reviewed and analyzed. Second, individual items which can be considered as candidates to represent the effectiveness of multimedia systems were derived from this previous research review, and a survey questionnaire was developed using those derived items. Based on the developed survey questionnaire, a pretest was administered at several domestic business firms with experiences of multimedia systems. Third, survey questionnaires were distributed to and collected from the 517 employees which experienced using multimedia systems.

MediaCloud: A New Paradigm of Multimedia Computing

  • Multimedia computing has attracted considerable attention with the rapid growth in the development and application of multimedia technology. Current studies have attempted to support the increasing resource consumption and computational overhead caused by multimedia computing. In this paper, we propose $MediaCloud$, a new multimedia computing paradigm that integrates the concept of cloud computing in handling multimedia applications and services effectively and efficiently. $MediaCloud$ faces the following key challenges: heterogeneity, scalability, and multimedia Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning. To address the challenges above, first, a layered architecture of $MediaCloud$, which can provide scalable multimedia services, is presented. Then, $MediaCloud$ technologies by which users can access multimedia services from different terminals anytime and anywhere with QoS provisioning are introduced. Finally, $MediaCloud$ implementation and applications are presented, and media retrieval and delivery are adopted as case studies to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed $MediaCloud$ design.
