  • In this paper, the primitive and double combined motion classification of the arm is discussed using pattern recognition of EM signal. The EM signals are detected from Ag-Ag/Cl surface electrodes, and IBM PC, calculated the Likelyhood probability and the decision function on the feature space of integral absolute value. Multiclass decision rule is introduced for higher decision rate. On our experimental results from expert simulator, the decision rate of more than 78% can be obtained.

  • The main object of this paper is to develop a leave-one-out(LOO) bound of all pairwise comparison error correcting output codes (APC-ECOC). To avoid using classifiers whose corresponding target values are 0 in APC-ECOC and requiring pilot estimates we developed a bound based on mean misclassification probability(MMP). It can be used to tune kernel hyperparameters. Our empirical experiment using kernel mean squared estimate(KMSE) as the binary classifier indicates that the bound leads to good estimates of kernel hyperparameters.

  • We propose a multi-class AdaBoost algorithm for en efficient classification of multi-class data in this paper. Traditional AdaBoost algorithm is basically a binary classifier and it has limitations when applied to multi-class data problems even though multi-class versions are available. In order to overcome the problems on the AdaBoost algorithm for multi-class classification problems, we devise an AdaBoost architecture with a training algorithm that utilizes multi-class classifiers for its weak classifiers instead of series of binary classifiers. Experiments on a image classification problem using collected Caltech Image Database are preformed. The results show that the proposed AdaBoost architecture can reduce its training time while maintaining its classification accuracy competitive when compared to Adaboost.M2.

  • Multinomial logistic regression is a well known multiclass classification method in the field of statistical learning. More recently, the development of sparse multinomial logistic regression model has found application in microarray classification, where explicit identification of the most informative observations is of value. In this paper, we propose a sparse multinomial kernel logistic regression model, in which the sparsity arises from the use of a Laplacian prior and a fast exact algorithm is derived by employing a bound optimization approach. Experimental results are then presented to indicate the performance of the proposed procedure.

  • Plastics are classified into 7 types such as PET (PETE), HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, PS, and Other for separation and recycling. Recently, large corporations advocating ESG management are replacing them with bioplastics. Incineration and landfill of disposal of plastic waste are responsible for air pollution and destruction of the ecosystem. Because it is not easy to accurately classify plastic materials with the naked eye, automated system-based screening studies using various sensor technologies and AI-based software technologies have been conducted. In this paper, NIR scanning devices considering the NIR wavelength characteristics that appear differently for each plastic material and a system that can identify the type of plastic by learning the NIR spectrum data collected through it. The accuracy of plastic material identification was evaluated through a decision tree-based SVM model for multiclass classification on NIR spectral datasets for 8 types of plastic samples including biodegradable plastic.

  • In this study, we present a system for identifying equivalent grades of standardized wire rod steel based on alloy composition using machine learning techniques. The system comprises two models, one based on a supervised multi-class classification algorithm and the other based on unsupervised autoencoder algorithm. Our evaluation showed that the supervised model exhibited superior performance in terms of prediction stability and reliability of prediction results. This system provides a useful tool for non-experts seeking similar grades of steel based on alloy composition.

  • In the real world, new types of attacks or variants are constantly emerging, but attack traffic classification models developed through artificial neural networks and supervised learning do not properly detect new types of attacks that have not been trained. Most of the previous studies overlooked this problem and focused only on improving the structure of their artificial neural networks. As a result, a number of new attacks were frequently classified as normal traffic, and attack traffic classification performance was severly degraded. On the other hand, the softmax function, which outputs the probability that each class is correctly classified in the multi-class classification as a result, also has a significant impact on the classification performance because it fails to calculate the softmax score properly for a new type of attack traffic that has not been trained. In this paper, based on this characteristic of softmax function, we propose an efficient method to improve the classification performance against new types of attacks by classifying traffic with a probability below a certain level as attacks, and demonstrate the efficiency of our approach through experiments.

  • Several studies on the use of Support Vector Machines (SVMs) for diagnosing rotating machinery have been successfully carried out, but the fault classification depends on the input features as well as a multi-classification scheme, binary optimizer, kernel function, and the parameter to be used in the kernel function. Most of the published papers on multiclass SVM applications report the use of the same features to classify the faults. In this study, simple statistical features are determined on the basis of time domain vibration signals for various fault conditions, and the optimal features for each fault condition are selected. Then, the optimal features are used in the SVM training and in the classification of each fault condition. Simulation results using experimental data show that the results of the proposed stepwise classification approach with a relatively short training time are comparable to those for a single multi-class SVM.

  • Plants are very crucial for life on Earth. There is a wide variety of plant species available, and the number is increasing every year. Species knowledge is a necessity of various groups of society like foresters, farmers, environmentalists, educators for different work areas. This makes species identification an interdisciplinary interest. This, however, requires expert knowledge and becomes a tedious and challenging task for the non-experts who have very little or no knowledge of the typical botanical terms. However, the advancements in the fields of machine learning and computer vision can help make this task comparatively easier. There is still not a system so developed that can identify all the plant species, but some efforts have been made. In this study, we also have made such an attempt. Plant identification usually involves four steps, i.e. image acquisition, pre-processing, feature extraction, and classification. In this study, images from Swedish leaf dataset have been used, which contains 1,125 images of 15 different species. This is followed by pre-processing using Gaussian filtering mechanism and then texture and color features have been extracted. Finally, classification has been done using Multiclass-support vector machine, which achieved accuracy of nearly 93.26%, which we aim to enhance further.
