IPTV broadcast channels and video content distribution are increasingly saturating network paths. New solutions based on inter-domain multicast protocols could contribute to the enhancement of multimedia content distribution over the Internet. The aim of this paper is to propose new capabilities for an existing inter-domain multicast protocol, the Protocol Independent Multicast-Sparse Mode. We describe the modified protocol and analyze its behavior using newly developed tools based on an open-source software simulator. The resulting protocol does not require topology information, which is advantageous for easier deployment. In addition, the adopted solution avoids inherent problems with inter-domain multicast routing, such as multiple paths and path asymmetries.

For the Explicit Multicast (Xcast) scheme, we propose a scheme that provides dynamic group membership and supports a large, dense multicast group. To do so, we use a hierarchical joining mechanism, where a domain agent joins a group on behalf of hosts. In our scheme, a sender transmits multicast packets to a domain agent, and then the agent forwards the packets to receivers in a domain. A host can join or leave a group at my time via the domain agent. Thus, a destination field of the Xcast header has addresses of domain agents instead of hosts. Simulation results show that our scheme can reduce more the Xcast header size and cost in forwarding packets than the Xcast, especially for a large multicast group. Like traditional multicast schemes, our scheme can support large multicast group members.
Multicast service will be required to be an important form of communication without interruption to the delivery of multicast service in mobile networks increasing MNs. In this paper, we review current status of PMIPv6(Proxy Mobile IPv6) multicast listener support being standardized in the IETF and point out limitations of the current approach and we proposed a fast multicast handover procedure in inter domain PMIPv6 network of network-based mobility management. The proposed Fast multicast handover procedure in inter domain optimizes multicast management by using the context of the MNs. We evaluate the proposed fast multicast handover procedure compared to the based one through the developed analytical models and confirm that introduced fast multicast handover procedure provides the reduced service interruption time and total network overhead compared to the based one during handovers.

An increase of the number of the real time applications and the Internet hosts make the Internet architecture changed. Current Internet architecture has some problems to process the real time traffics. To solve these problem, a new Internet architecture is proposed as the Integrated Service model. In the current Internet, as multicast protocols, the QoS multicast and the best-effort multicast have been studied in their separate network environments. But, the Integrated Service Packet Network is a heterogeneous network composed of the QoS delivery domain and the best-effort delivery domain. Thus, those separated multicast protocols have limitations in an ISPN. In this paper, we propose a multicast protocol for the ISPN with the QoS and the best-effort multicasting, and analyze the performance of this protocol. As a result, we find that the packet losses are same for hybrid multicast and best-effort multicast when the bandwidth is sufficient. But, if there exist some background traffics, the hybrid multicast has less packet loss than of the best-effort multicast.

In order to securely transmit multicast data packets in a mobile environment where frequent join/leave events are a characteristic of the environment, there is a need for a new secure and efficient group key management solution. We propose a secure group key generation/distribution solution providing scalability and reliability. Using this solution, when a mobile node, which is in a multicast session, enters a new domain, the agent of the domain joins the multicast session and coordinates its data packets with the mobile node. The agent encrypts and transmits subsequent data packets to the mobile node, using a local one-time pad key. This key is generated with FI sequences, enabling the mobile node to regenerate the same data packet, based on the information sent by the agent. Our performance analysis demonstrates that the proposed solution can significantly reduce the number of key generations and distributions, when it is applied to the hierarchical mobile IPv6 network.
This paper deals with the creation of multicast trees in a differentiated services (DiffServ) domain. Initially, we model the integration problems of multicast & DiffServ and give a general de-scription of our framework for multicast provisioning in DiffServ domains. Within this framework, we introduce a novel heuristic algorithm which calculates the multicast trees efficiently. The multicast tree's format and the bandwidth constraints per service class are modeled. The heuristic is based on the Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm and aims to produce the cheapest possible trees (Steiner tree problem) that conform to the defined model. The produced trees can be considered as DiffServ-customized Steiner trees. Furthermore, we evaluate the algorithm with theoretical and experimental analysis and finally, we present our conclusions.

While the advantages of multicast delivery over multiple unicast deliveries is undeniable, the deployment of the IP multicast protocol has been limited to network domains under single administrative control. Deployment of inter-domain multicast delivery has been slow due to both technical and administrative reasons. For this reasons overlay multicasting technologies are recently proposed. We propose a End-Host Multicast Tree Protocol (EMTP) that searches two levels of the tree at a time until reaching to a leaf node and can select the nearest node that a new node try to join in the tree. Even if there is no available degree of the desirable node that a new node want to join, selecting the node as a potential parent by EMTP can reduce the number of tree switching with robustness of the tree and bring to ruduce the data delivery time.

This paper proposes an efficient multicast scheme for the hierarchical mobile IPv6(HMIPv6). If a mobility anchor point(MAP) in a new domain does not support multicasting, an entering group member cannot join the multicast group through the new MAP The group member thus keeps receiving multicast packets from its home agent(HA) using Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6). This increases the propagation delay of binding update (BU) messages. However, our scheme enables an entering group member to keep receiving packets from the old multicast MAP. It can also reduce tunneling costs, total delivery costs and handover latency. We simulated the performance of our scheme by comparing it with the seamless multicast handover in a hierarchical mobile Pv6 (M-HMIPv6) using the delivery cost and handover latency factors.

Multicast is an efficient method for real-time transmission in many multimedia applications. It is important to recover lost packets and to manage multicast groups according to the network status in order to improve the reliability of multicast transmissions. In this paper, we propose a method that can efficiently recover lost packets in a large multicast group. In the proposed method, we create a recovery cluster (RC) using a multicast domain (MD) for recovery of lost packets. In the conventional methods, clusters send a request message for lost packets to the senders in order to recover the packets lost from many multicast applications. This increases packet delay time and overhead because of the feedback messages and retransmitted packets. In the proposed method, we improve these problems using the RC, which consists of many MDs (which have overlay multicast senders), and many cluster heads (CHs). We divide the message into blocks, and divide each block into many segments for packet recovery using the CHs. When packet loss occurs, all CHs share the segment information and recover the lost segments at the same time. Simulation results show that the proposed method could improve the packet recovery ratio by about 50% compared to the conventional methods.

The home network has been revitalized due to the emergence of the high-speed broadband network and explosive increases of the home network services. Especially multicast based high-definition (HD) IPTV service is on high demand from both Internet service provider (ISP) and users. In order to provide high quality HD IPTV service without packet loss and delay, the ISP utilizes various network QoS mechanisms. Due to the misleading fact, that the home gateway is considered as an end terminal in terms of the ISP's viewpoint, the ISPs can not guarantee the end-to-end QoS within the scope of the current home network architecture. Therefore, an independent QoS guaranteed mechanism should be considered within the home network domain. As the home gateway manages both private home and public access network within the home network, we propose and implement a novel QoS mechanism for the multicast based HD IPTV service over the home gateway. In order to provide QoS guaranteed HD IPTV service, the proposed mechanism classifies the packets, manages home network bandwidth resources, and executes call admission control using the channel join message. Also, we utilize layer 2 multicast packet forwarding scheme to improve the overall performance of the home network services. Through the experiments of implementing the multicast based HD IPTV services, we will verify the efficiency of the proposed mechanism.
