A finite element nonlinear stress-deformation model with multi-interface element is applied to the stability analysis of waste landfill slope. Strength parameters of waste and geosynthetic materials are obtained from the triaxial test of waste and the direct shear test of geosynthetics, respectively. The landfill models used for the numerical models are fit to regulations of the Korean waste management law. The results of the strength tests showed linear behavior for the waste and nonlinear behavior for the eosynthectic materials. The stability analysis with multi-interface element for the geosynthetic materials in the liner system showed large shear stress and slippage at the boundary of the foundation and the slope of the waste fill. This analysis verified the necessity of multi-interface analysis for waste landfills with composite liners.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze for resonant frequency, vibration transmissibility and damping ratio of multi-layered corrugated structures using a random vibration test. Methods: The random vibration test was performed by the ASTM D4728 specifications using two paperboards (S120, K180) and two types of flutes (A/F, B/F). Damping ratio of the multi-layered corrugated structures was estimated using a theoretical equation derived from the measured resonant frequency and transmissibility. Results: The resonant frequency and vibration transmissibility of the multi-layered corrugated structures of K180 and B-flute were higher than those of S120 and A-flute, respectively; however, the damping ratio of each sample had the opposite tendency. The resonant frequency was inversely proportional to the sample thickness and static stress; vibration transmissibility and damping ratio were not correlated with sample thickness and static stress. In addition, we developed a mathematical model of the resonant frequency with variables of sample thickness and static stress. Conclusions: Results of this study can be useful for environment-friendly and optimal packaging design since vibration has been a key factor in cushioning packaging design.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to develop cushion curves models and analyze the cushioning performance of multi-layered corrugated structures (MLCS) using a method based on dynamic stress-energy relationship. Methods: Cushion tests were performed for developing cushion curve models under 12 combinations of test conditions: three different combinations of drop height, material thickness, and static stress for each of four levels of energy densities between 15 and $60kJ/m^3$. Results: Dynamic stress and energy density for MLCS followed an exponential relationship. Cushion curve models were developed as a function of drop height, material thickness, and static stress for different paperboards and flute types. Generally, the differences between the shock pulse (transmitted peak acceleration) and cushion curve (position and width of belly portion) for the first drop and the averaged second to fifth drop were greater than those for polymer-based cushioning materials. Accordingly, the loss of cushioning performance of MLCS was estimated to be greater than that of polymer-based cushioning materials with the increasing number of drops. The position of the belly of the cushion curve of MLCS tends to shift upward to the left with increasing drop height, and the belly portion became narrower. However, depending on material thickness, under identical conditions, the cushion curve of MLCS showed an opposite tendency. Conclusions: The results of this study can be useful for environment-friendly and optimal packaging design as shock and vibrations are the key factors in cushioning packaging design.
The effects of root gap on welding residual stress and deformation are dealt with the multi-pass weldment with three kinds(0, 6, 30mm) of root gap by F.E.M common code, and then compared with experiment data. In this analysis, an 100% ramp heat input model was used to avoid numerical convergence problem due to an instantaneous increase in temperature near the fusion zone, and the effect of a moving arc in a two dimensional plane was also included. During the analysis, a small time increment was applied in a period with instantaneous temperature fluctuation while a large time increment was used in the rest period. The residual stress is distributed as symmetric types and maximum value is also equivalent when the weldment with 0mm and 6mm root gap is welded. In the case of 30mm root gap welding, the distribution of the residual stress extends over a wide range as asymmetric types due to the built-up weld, and most of the residual stress is biased in the side of a built-up weld part. In case of 0mm gap welding and 6mm gap welding, a little angular distortion occurs, but the level of deformation is small. When the weldment with 30mm root gap is welded, the angular deformation of the asymmetric types, however, occurs larger than the other specimens. The experimental and the analytic results show good coincidence and indicate that the welding residual stress and deformation distribution of 30 mm root gap specimen may be asymmetric and the amplitude is larger than those of root gap specimen under standard.

Remote sensing using multispectral radiometry may be a useful tool to detect drought stress in turf. The objective of this research was to investigate the correlation between drought stress and multispectral reflectance (MSR) from the turf canopy. St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum[Walt.] Kuntze.) cultivars 'Floratam' and 'Palmetto', 'SeaIsle 1' seashore paspalum Paspalum vaginatum Swartz.), 'Empire' zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.), and 'Pensacola' bahiagrass (Paspalum notatumFlugge) were established in lysimeters in the University of Florida Envirotron greenhouse facility in Gainesville. Irrigation was applied at 100%, 80%, 60%, or 40% of evapotranspiration (ET). Weekly evaluations included: a) shoot quality, leaf rolling, leaf firing b) soil moisture, chlorophyll content index; c) photosynthesis and d) multispectral reflectance. All the measurements were correlated with MSR data. Drought stress affected the infrared spectral region more than the visible spectral region. Reflectance sensitivity to water content of leaves was higher in the infrared spectral region than in the visible spectral region. Grasses irrigated at 100% and 80% of ET had no differences in normalized difference vegetation indices (NDVI), leaf area index (LAI), and stress indices. Grasses irrigated at 60% and 40% of ET had differences in NDVI, LAI, and stress indices. All measured wavelengths except 710nm were highly correlated (P < 0.0001) with turf visual quality, leaf firing, leaf rolling, soil moisture, chlorophyll content index, and photosynthesis. MSR could detect drought stress from the turf canopy.

The authors fabricated a nanopatterned surface on a GaN thin film deposited on a sapphire substrate and used that as an epitaxial wafer on which to grow an InGaN/GaN multi-quantum well structure with metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The deposited GaN epitaxial surface has a two-dimensional photonic crystal structure with a hexagonal lattice of 230 nm. The grown structure on the nano-surface shows a Raman shift of the transverse optical phonon mode to $569.5\;cm^{-1}$, which implies a compressive stress of 0.5 GPa. However, the regrown thin film without the nano-surface shows a free standing mode of $567.6\;cm^{-1}$, implying no stress. The nanohole surface better preserves the strain energy for pseudo-morphic crystal growth than does a flat plane.

The development of high-rise firefighting vehicles warrants thorough structural analysis for ensuring vehicle stability. A few structural analyses were carried out using CAD data, material properties, load conditions, and boundary conditions for evaluating the structural stability of an overloaded multi-aerial platform for firefighting and rescue. Structural analysis was performed with an analytical model consisting of a turntable, six booms, two jib booms, and a basket structure. This model was operated in eight modes. All simulation was performed using NASTRAN, a commercial code. As a result, we confirm that the position of local stress exceeds that of the yield strength. Therefore, stress concentration relaxation is possible by introducing reinforcing boom structures, changing the shape, or imparting a larger moment of inertia to the booms' cross sections.
This paper concerns about a study on dynamic responses of tracked vehicle on soft cohesive soil. For dynamic analyses of tracked vehicle, two different models were adopted, i.e. a single-body model and a multi-body model. The single-body vehicle model was assumed as a rigid body with 6-dof. The multi-body vehicle was modeled by using a commercial software, RecurDyn-LM. For the both models properties of cohesive soft soil were modeled by means of three relationships: pressure to sinkage, shear displacement to shear stress, and shear displacement to dynamic sinkage. Traveling performances of the two tracked vehicle models were compared through dynamic analyses in time domain.

Multi-disciplinary optimization design concept can provide a solution to many engineering problems. In the field of structural analysis, much development of size or topology optimization has been achieved in the application of research. This paper demonstrates an optimum design of a multi-layer cylindrical tube which behaves thermoelastically. A multi-layer cylindrical tube that has several different material properties at each layer is optimized within allowable stress and temperature range when mechanical and thermal loads are applied simultaneously. To analyze these problems using an efficient and precise method, the optimization theories are adopted to perform thermoelastic finite element analysis.
In the multi-purpose lathe, the design of tilting turret slide system has an important and critical role to enhance the accuracy of the machining process. Tilting turret unit is traveled by 3-axis slide systems. There is a need to design this part very carefully. In this research, the 3-axis slide system with tilting turret unit is researched with two approaches; The first is that 3-axis slide system is modeled and simulated using ADAMS software. The dynamic behavior of this system is visualized by data graphs and dynamic animations. The second is that the slide system is analyzed with the aspect of stress distribution. The slide system is modeled and displayed by PATRAN and analyzed by NASTRAN. The analysis of strain and stress distribution in the each node is prompted and visualized in the computer. The first step of virtual prototype which makes it possible to design economically and effectively is developed.
