  • The development of direct receiver techniques is expected to be a solution for future wideband or multi-band wireless systems based on software defined radio. In this Paper, we study the regeneration of I and Q signals for the SDR based direct conversion receiver, so that we can handle a wide bandwidth and maintain maximal flexibility in system utilization. After modeling the basic system considering the real wireless communication environment, and studying the impact of imperfect phase imbalance on the performance of a direct conversion receiver, we propose a suboptimal I and Q signal regeneration algorithm for the system. The proposed algerian regenerates I and Q signals using a real time early-late compensator which effectively estimates phase imbalances and gives feedback in a directreceiver. The proposed algorithm is shown to mitigate the impact of AWGN and improves performance especially at low SNR channel condition. According to the computer simulation, the BER performance of the proposed system is at least about 4 dB better than conventional systems under $45{\~}55$ degrees random phase errors.

  • Atmospheric propagation effects at millimeter wavelengths can significantly alter the phases of radio signals and reduce the coherence time, putting tight constraints on high frequency Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations. In previous works it has been shown that non-dispersive (e.g. tropospheric) effects can be calibrated with the frequency phase transfer (FPT) technique. The coherence time can thus be significantly extended. Ionospheric effects, which can still be significant, remain however uncalibrated after FPT, as well as the instrumental effects. In this work, we implement a further phase transfer between two FPT residuals (i.e. so-called FPT2) to calibrate the ionospheric effects based on their frequency dependence. We show that after FPT2, the coherence time at 3 mm can be further extended beyond 8 hours, and the residual phase errors can be sufficiently canceled by applying the calibration of another source, which can have a large angular separation from the target (> $20{\circ}$). Calibrations for all-sky distributed sources with a few calibrators are also possible after FPT2. One of the strengths and uniqueness of this calibration strategy is the suitability for high frequency all-sky survey observations including very weak sources. We discuss the introduction of a pulse calibration system in the future to calibrate the remaining instrumental effects and allowing the possibility of imaging the source structure at high frequencies with FPT2, where all phases are fully calibrated without involving any sources other than the target itself.

  • Optical variability is one way to probe the nature of the central engine of AGN at smaller linear scales, and previous studies have shown that optical variability of AGN is more prevalent at longer timescales and at shorter wavelengths. To understand the properties and physical mechanism of variability, we are performing the KMTNet Active Nuclei Variability Survey (KANVaS). Especially, we investigated intra-night variability of AGN with KMTNet data which observed COSMOS field during 3 separate nights from 2015 to 2016 in B, V, R, and I bands. Each night was composed of 5, 9, and 11 epochs with 20-30 min cadence. To find AGN in the COSMOS field, we applied multi-wavelength selection methods. Using X-ray, mid-infrared, and radio selection methods, 50-60, 130-220, 20-40 number of AGN are detected, respectively. Achieving photometric uncertainty ~0.01mag by differential photometry, we employed a standard time-series analysis tool to identify variable AGN, chi-square test. Preliminary results indicate that there is no evidence of intra-night optical variability of AGN. It is possible that previous studies discovered intra-night variability used inappropriate photometric error. However, main reason seems that our targets have fainter magnitude (higher photometric error) than that of previous studies. To discover variability of AGN, we will investigate longer timescale variability of AGN.

  • In this paper, we evaluate the performance of WCDMA reverse link receiver system with closed loop fast transmit power control (TPC). For fast power control, SIR must be measured precisely. We propose a new SIR measurement algorithm having a simple structure. The proposed algorithm uses unused OVSF code for interference power evaluation. The proposed SIR measurement algorithm is compared to the conventional SIR measurement algorithm in Ref.$^{[1]}$ under closed loop fast TPC. We adopted WMSA channel estimation filter with Κ=2 for mobile radio channel estimation and considered one slot TPC delay. Extensive computer simulation results show that the proposed algorithm using unused OVSF code reduces the required Ε$_{b}$$_{0}$ at the BER of 10$^{-3}$ up to 0.9㏈ and has an improved TPC error performance compared to the conventional algorithm.

  • This paper reports on the design of a multiband multiple-input and multiple-output(MIMO) antenna for long-term evolution(LTE) vehicular communication and includes an analysis of the throughput field test results that were acquired by mounting the antenna to a vehicle. The antenna used for the field test was designed as a planar structure and included multiple stubs to obtain multiband resonant characteristics operating in the LTE(0.8~0.9 GHz, 1.7~2.2 GHz), Wi-Fi(2.4~2.48 GHz), and wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE)(5.8~5.9 GHz) frequency bands. For the field test, antenna prototypes were mounted on the dashboard and roof of a vehicle and connected to the experimental LTE modem. The data transfer rate(throughput), signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio(SINR), and reference signal received quality(RSRQ) were measured and analyzed in various real-world radio wave environments. Based on these results, the relationship between the SINR and throughput according to the field intensity is confirmed.

  • The analysis of ocean environment offers us essential information for ocean exploration. But ocean environment has a lot of environmental variables such as the movements of nodes by an ocean current, corrosion by salt water, attenuation of radio wave, occurrences of multi-path and difficulty of sensor nodes' deployment. It is accordingly difficult and complex to gather and process the environmental information through ocean data communication due to these constraints of ocean environment unlike the terrestrial wireless networks. To overcome these problems, we organized ocean communication network for monitoring underwater environment by real experiment in Gyeongpoho similar to ocean environment. Therefore, this paper aims at overcoming major obstacles in ocean environment, effectively deploying sensor nodes for ocean environment monitoring and defining an efficient structure suitable for communication environment by the implementation of ocean environment monitoring system in Gyeongpoho.

  • A triple-band antenna which can be used at GSM900, PCS1900 and Bluetooth(or Wi-Fi) frequency band is proposed. The proposed antenna is designed based upon switching between IFA(Inverted F Antenna) that has a resonant length of ${\lambda}/4$ and loop antenna that has a resonant length of ${\lambda}/2$. It can be applied to triple-band only by use of single printed pattern due to the switching characteristic. It is designed by use of the IFA for the application to the GSM900, while it is designed by use of the loop antenna for the application to the PCS1900 and by use of additional pattern of IFA for the application to the Bluetooth(or Wi-Fi) respectively. As a result, it has been observed that the proposed antenna satisfies the required return loss(${\leq}10dB$) and also has efficiency(${\geq}80%$) over the whole band. Moreover the proposed antenna has omni-directional radiation pattern which is suitable to apply to the mobile phone.

  • With the fast growing data traffic, the performance of the convergent overlay network environment under the cognitive networking environment is crucial for the implementation of the efficient network structure. In order to achieve high capacity and reliable link quality in wireless communication of the overlay convergent networks with the cognitive networking based on the advanced capability of the mobile terminal, a Distributed Wireless Communication System (DWCS) can provide the capability of ambient-aware dual cell system's operation. This paper has considered virtual cell: the Dual Virtual Cell (DVC), and also proposes DVC employment strategy based on DWCS network. One is the Active Virtual Cell which exists for user's actual data traffic and the other is the Candidate Virtual Cell which contains a set of candidate antennas to protect user's link quality from performance degradation or interruption. The considered system constructs DVC by using cognitive ability of finding useful virtual signals. Also, for multi-user high-rate data transmission, the DWCS system exploits Space-Time Trellis Codes. The effects of changing environments on the system performance has been investigated thereafter.

  • The next generation cellular radio systems require high data rate transmission and large system capacity In order to meet these requirements, multiple antennas can be used at the base and mobile stations, forming MIMO(multiple-input, multiple-output) channels This paper considers a downlink MIMO system assuming a large number of base station antennas, a small number of mobile station antennas, and rich-scattering, quasi-stationary, and flat-fading channel environments When the channel state information is given at the base station in a single user system, a MIMO technique with SVD(singular value decomposition) and water-filling can achieve the maximal downlink channel capacity. In multi-user environments, however, SDMA(space division multiple acces) technique can be used to further increase the total channel capacity supported by the base station This paper proposes a MIMO SDMA technique which can transmit parallel data streams to each of multiple users. The proposed method. can achieve higher total channel capacity than SVD-based MIMO techniques or conventional SDMA using smart antennas.

  • This paper proposes a real-time face recognition system which detects multiple faces from low resolution video such as web-camera video. Face recognition system consists of the face detection step and the face classification step. At First, it finds face region candidates by using AdaBoost based object detection method which have fast speed and robust performance. It generates reduced feature vector for each face region candidate by using principle component analysis. At Second, Face classification used Principle Component Analysis and multi-SVM. Experimental result shows that the proposed method achieves real-time face detection and face recognition from low resolution video. Additionally, We implement the auto-tracking face recognition system using the Pan-Tilt Web-camera and radio On/Off digital door-lock system with face recognition system.
