Engineering system problems consist of multi-objective optimisation and the performance analysis is generally time consuming. To optimise the system concerning its performance, many researchers perform the optimisation using an approximation model. The Response Surface Method (RSM) is usually used to predict the system performance in many research fields, but it shows prediction errors for highly nonlinear problems. To create an appropriate metamodel for marine systems, Lee (2015) compares the prediction accuracy of the approximation model, and multi-objective optimal design framework is proposed based on a confirmed approximation model. The proposed framework is composed of three parts: definition of geometry, generation of approximation model, and optimisation. The major objective of this paper is to confirm the applicability/usability of the proposed optimal design framework and evaluate the prediction accuracy based on sensitivity analysis. We have evaluated the proposed framework applicability in derrick structure optimisation considering its structural performance.

In many industries, the linear motor replaces the existing framework for linear transportation. Similar to other conventional motors, it is important to minimize the ripple of thrust and to maximize the thrust force of the linear motor. Because the two objectives are associated to each other, the multi-objective design process is necessary considering all objectives. This paper intends to optimize geometric parameters of the linear motor with two design objectives using design of experiments and sequential response surface method.
This paper presents a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm for combinatorial optimisation and applied for design optimisation of fiber reinforced composite structures. The proposed algorithm closely follows the implementation of Pareto Archive Evolutionary strategy (PAES) proposed in the literature. The modifications suggested include a customized neighbourhood search algorithm in place of mutation operator to improve intensification mechanism and a cross over operator to improve diversification mechanism. Further, an external archive is maintained to collect the historical Pareto optimal solutions. The design constraints are handled in this paper by treating them as additional objectives. Numerical studies have been carried out by solving a hybrid fiber reinforced laminate composite cylindrical shell, stiffened composite cylindrical shell and pressure vessel with varied number of design objectives. The studies presented in this paper clearly indicate that well spread Pareto optimal solutions can be obtained employing the proposed algorithm.

Recently, a concept of damped outrigger system has been proposed for tall buildings. Structural characteristics and design method of this system were not sufficiently investigated to date. In this study, control performance of damped outrigger system for building structures subjected to seismic excitations has been investigated. And optimal design method of damped outrigger system has been proposed using multi-objective genetic algorithm. To this end, a simplified numerical model of damped outrigger system has been developed. State-space equation formulation proposed in previous research was used to make a numerical model. Multi-objective genetic algorithms has been employed for optimal design of the stiffness and damping parameters of the outrigger damper. Based on numerical analyses, it has been shown that the damped outrigger system control dynamic responses of the tall buildings subjected to earthquake excitations in comparison with a traditional outrigger system.

A structural design system is developed for the optimum design of double hull tankers based on the multi-objective function method. As a multi-objective function method, Pareto optimal based random search method is adopted to find the minimum structural weight and fabrication cost. The fabrication cost model is developed by considering the welding technique, welding poses and assembly stages to manage the fabrication man-hour and process. In this study, a new structural design is investigated due to the rapidly increased material cost. Several optimum structural designs on the basis of high material cost are carried out based on the Pareto optimal set obtained by the random search method. The design results are compared with existing ship, which is designed under low material cost.
In order to improve the crane-hook's performance and service life, we formulate a multi-criteria shape design problem considering practical conditions. The structural weight, the displacement at specified points and the induced matrix norm of stiffness matrix are adopted as the evaluation items to be minimized. The heights and widths of cross-section are chosen as the design variables. The design variables are expressed in terms of shape functions based on the Gaussian function. For this multi-objective optimization problem with three items, we utilize a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, that is, the multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO). As a common feature of obtained solutions, the side views are tapered shapes similar to those of actual crane-hook designs. The evaluation item values of the obtained designs demonstrate importance of the present optimization as well as the feasibility of the proposed optimal design approach.

It is necessary to develop an efficient optimization technique to optimize the engineering structures which have given design spaces, discrete design values and several design goals. As optimization techniques, direct search method and stochastic search method are widely used in designing of engineering structures. The merit of the direct search method is to search the optimum points rapidly by considering the search direction, step size and convergence limit. And the merit of the stochastic search method is to obtain the global optimum points by spreading point randomly entire the design spaces. In this paper, a Pareto optimal based multi-objective function method (PMOFM) is developed by considering the search direction based on Pareto optimal points, step size, convergence limit and random search generation . The PMOFM can also apply to the single objective function problems, and can consider the discrete design variables such as discrete plate thickness and discrete stiffener spaces. The design results are compared with existing Evolutionary Strategies (ES) method by performing the design of double bottom structures which have discrete plate thickness and discrete stiffener spaces.
This paper adopts and investigates the non-dominated sorting approach for extending the single-objective Cuckoo Search (CS) into a multi-objective framework. The proposed approach uses an archive composed of primary and secondary population to select and keep the non-dominated solutions at each generation instead of pairwise analogy used in the original Multi-objective Cuckoo Search (MOCS). Our simulations show that such a low computational complexity approach can enrich CS to incorporate multi-objective needs instead of considering multiple eggs for cuckoos used in the original MOCS. The proposed MOCS is tested on a set of multi-objective optimization problems and two well-studied engineering design optimization problems. Compared to MOCS and some other available multi-objective algorithms such as NSGA-II, our approach is found to be competitive while benefiting simplicity. Moreover, the proposed approach is simpler and is capable of finding a wide spread of solutions with good coverage and convergence to true Pareto optimal fronts.
In this paper, we suggest reliability as a metric to evaluate the robustness of a design for the optimal design of electromagnetic devices, with respect to constraints under the uncertainties in design variables. For fast numerical efficiency, we applied the sensitivity-assisted Monte Carlo simulation (S-MCS) method to perform reliability calculation. Furthermore, we incorporated the S-MCS with single-objective and multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithms to achieve reliability-based optimal designs, undertaking probabilistic constraint and multi-objective optimization approaches, respectively. We validated the performance of the developed optimization algorithms through application to the optimal design of a superconducting magnetic energy storage system.

Topology optimization is an effective scheme to obtain the initial design concept: however, it is hard to apply in case of non-linear or multi-objective problems. In this study, a modified topology optimization method is proposed to generate a structure of a swing arm type actuator satisfying maximum compliance as well. as maximum stiffness using the multi-objective optimization. approach. The multi-objective function is defined to maximize the compliance in the direction of focusing of the actuator and the second eigen-frequency of the structure. The design of experiments are performed and the response surface functions are formulated to construct the multi-objective function. The weighting factors between conflicting functions are determined by the back-error propagation neural network and the solution of multi-objective function is acquired using the genetic algorithm.
