  • 3D printing is a technology that converts a computer-generated 3D model into a real object with additive manufacturing technology. A majority of 3D printing technologies uses one material, and this is considered a limitation. In this study, we developed a multi-material 3D printer by adopting dual resin vat and cleaning system with DLP (Digital Light Processing) 3D printing technology. The developed multi-material DLP 3D printer is composed of a manufacturing system, cleaning system, transporting system, and automatic resin recharging system. Various 3D structures were 3D printed with two materials, thus demonstrating the potential. Printing performance of the multi-material DLP 3D printer was studied by performing a comparative surface roughness test and tension test on specimens composed of one material as well as those composed of two materials.

  • New material design has obtained tremendous attention in material science community as the performance of new materials, especially in nano length scale, could be greatly improved to applied in modern industry. In certain conditions limiting experimental synthesis of these new materials, new approach by computer simulation has been proposed to be applied, being able to save time and cost. Recent development of computer systems with high speed, large memory, and parallel algorithms enables to analyze individual atoms using first principle calculation to predict quantum phenomena. Beyond the quantum level calculations, mesoscopic scale and continuum limit can be addressed either individually or together as a multi-scale approach. In this article, we introduced current endeavors on material design using analytical theory and computer simulations in multi-length scales and on multi-physical properties. Some of the physical phenomena was shown to be interconnected via a cross-link rule called 'cross-property relation'. It is suggested that the computer simulation approach by multi-physics analysis can be efficiently applied to design new materials for multi-functional characteristics.

  • In this study, a mixed-interpolated tensorial component 4 nodes method (MITC4) is treated as a numerical analysis model for topology optimization using multiple materials assigned within Reissner-Mindlin plates. Multi-material optimal topology and shape are produced as alternative plate retrofit designs to provide reasonable material assignments based on stress distributions. Element density distribution contours of mixing multiple material densities are linked to Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) as a design model. Mathematical formulation of multi-material topology optimization problem solving minimum compliance is an alternating active-phase algorithm with the Gauss-Seidel version as an optimization model of optimality criteria. Numerical examples illustrate the reliability and accuracy of the present design method for multi-material topology optimization with Reissner-Mindlin plates using MITC4 elements and steel materials.

  • Though multi-panel structures lined with a poroelastic material have been widely used to reduce sound transmission in various fields, most of the previous works to design them were conducted by repeated analyses or experiments based on initially given configurations or sequences. Therefore, it was difficult to obtain the optimal sequence of multi-panel structures lined with a poroelastic material yielding superior sound isolation capability. In this work, we propose a new design method to sequence a multi-panel structure lined with a poroelastic material having maximized sound transmission loss. Being formulated as a one-dimensional topology optimization problem for a given target frequency, the optimal sequencing of panel-poroelastic layers is systematically carried out in an iterative manner. In this method, a panel layer is expressed as a limiting case of a poroelastic layer to facilitate the optimization process. This means that main material properties of a poroelastic material are treated as Interpolated functions of design variables. The designed sequences of panel-poroelastic layers were shown to be significantly affected by the target frequencies; more panel layers were used at higher target frequencies. The sound transmission loss of the system was calculated by the transfer matrix derived from Biot's theory.

  • An optimum design process of the broad-band multi-layered radar absorbing material, using genetic algorithm, is established for the radar cross section reduction of a complex target, which consists of multiple reflection structures, such as surface warships. It follows the successive process of radar cross section analysis, scattering center analysis, radar absorbing material design, and reanalysis of radar cross section after applying the radar absorbing material. It is demonstrated that it is very effective even in the optimum design of the multi-layer radar absorbing material. This results from the fact that the three factors, i.e.. the incident angle range, broad-band frequencies, and maximum thickness can be simultaneously taken into account by adopting the genetic algorithm.

  • We present a new design method of one-dimensional multi-layered acoustic foams for transmission loss maximization by topology optimization. Multi-layered acoustic foam sequences consisting of acoustic air layers and poroelastic material layers are designed for target frequency values. For successful topology optimization design of multi-layered acoustic foams, the material interpolation concept of topology optimization is adopted. In doing so, an acoustic air layer is modeled as a limiting poroelastic material layer; acoustic air and poroelastic material are handled by a single set of governing equations based on Biot's theory. For efficient analysis of a specific multi-layered foam appearing during optimization, we do not solve the differential equations directly, but we use an efficient transfer matrix approach which can be derived from Biot's theory. Through some numerical case studies, the proposed design method for finding optimal multi-layer sequencing is validated.

  • In typical, structural topology optimization plays a significant role to both increase stiffness and save mass of structures in the resulting design. This study contributes to a new numerical approach of topologically optimal design of Mindlin-Reissner plates considering Winkler foundation and mathematical formulations of multi-directional variable thickness of the plate by using multi-materials. While achieving optimal multi-material topologies of the plate with multi-directional variable thickness, the weight information of structures in terms of effective utilization of the material at the appropriate thickness location may be provided for engineers and designers of structures. Besides, numerical techniques of the well-established mixed interpolation of tensorial components 4 element (MITC4) is utilized to overcome a well-known shear locking problem occurring to thin plate models. The well-founded mathematical formulation of topology optimization problem with variable thickness Mindlin-Reissner plate structures by using multiple materials is derived in detail as one of main achievements of this article. Numerical examples verify that variable thickness Mindlin-Reissner plates on Winkler foundation have a significant effect on topologically optimal multi-material design results.

  • This research presents a multi-material topology optimization for functionally graded material (FGM) and nonFGM with elastic buckling criteria. The elastic buckling based multi-material topology optimization of functionally graded steels (FGSs) uses a Jacobi scheme and a Method of Moving Asymptotes (MMA) as an expansion to revise the design variables shown first. Moreover, mathematical expressions for modified interpolation materials in the buckling framework are also described in detail. A Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) as well as a modified penalizing material model is utilized. Based on this investigation on the buckling constraint with homogenization material properties, this method for determining optimal shape is presented under buckling constraint parameters with non-homogenization material properties. For optimal problems, minimizing structural compliance like as an objective function is related to a given material volume and a buckling load factor. In this study, conflicts between structural stiffness and stability which cause an unfavorable effect on the performance of existing optimization procedures are reduced. A few structural design features illustrate the effectiveness and adjustability of an approach and provide some ideas for further expansions.

  • For the insulation design of a high temperature superconducting(HTS) cable, three kinds of design method were proposed, which used AC and impulse withstand voltage and partial discharge inception strength. However, the designed insulation thickness by AC and impulse could not be applied to cable fabrication process due to much low electrical breakdown strength. The effect of the multi-layered insulation paper was not considered on the previous insulation design and the insulation thickness by partial discharge inception strength could be applied only. In this paper, the electrical breakdown characteristic, which considered the effect of multi-layered of LPP, was investigated to design the insulation thickness.

  • In this article, a simple and robust multi-objective assessment method to control design angles and node positions connected among steel outrigger truss members is proposed to approve both structural safety and economical cost. For given outrigger member layouts, the present method utilizes general-purpose prototypes of outrigger members, having resistance to withstand lateral load effects directly applied to tall buildings, which conform to variable connecting node and design space deposition. Outrigger layouts are set into several initial design conditions of height to width of an arbitrary given design space, i.e., variable design space. And then they are assessed in terms of a proposed multi-objective function optimizing both minimal total displacement and material quantity subjected to design impact factor indicating the importance of objectives. To evaluate the proposed multi-objective function, an analysis model uses a modified Maxwell-Mohr method, and an optimization model is defined by a ground structure assuming arbitrary discrete straight members. It provides a new robust assessment model from a local design point of view, as it may produce specific optimal prototypes of outrigger layouts corresponding to arbitrary height and width ratio of design space. Numerical examples verify the validity and robustness of the present assessment method for controlling prototypes of outrigger truss members considering a multi-objective optimization achieving structural safety and material cost.
