  • This article focuses on the static and dynamic analysis and optimization of an anisogrid lattice plate subjected to axial compressive load with simply supported boundary conditions. The lattice plate includes diagonal and transverse ribs and is modeled as an orthotropic plate with effective stiffness properties. The study employs the first-order shear deformation theory and the Ritz method with a Legendre approximation function. In the realm of optimization, the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II is utilized as an evolutionary multi-objective algorithm to optimize. The research findings are validated through finite element analysis. Notably, this study addresses the less-explored areas of optimizing the geometric parameters of the plate by maximizing the buckling load and natural frequency while minimizing mass. Furthermore, this study attempts to fill the gap related to the analysis of the post-buckling behavior of lattice plates, which has been conspicuously overlooked in previous research. This has been accomplished by conducting nonlinear analyses and scrutinizing post-buckling diagrams of this type of lattice structure. The efficacy of the continuous methods for analyzing the natural frequency, buckling, and post-buckling of these lattice plates demonstrates that while a degree of accuracy is compromised, it provides a significant amount of computational efficiency.

  • This paper presents a simple carrier symmetric method for the voltage balance of flying capacitors in FCMLI(flying capacitor multi-level inverter). To achieve the voltage balance of flying capacitors, the utilization of each carrier must be balanced during a half-cycle of the switching period such as PSPWM(Phase-Shifted PWM). However, the CRPWM(Carrier Redistribution PWM) method causes the fluctuation of flying capacitor voltages because the balanced utilization of carriers is not achieved. Moreover, it does not consider that the load current change has an influence on flying capacitor voltages by assuming that the current flows into the load. To overcome the drawbacks of CRPWM, it is modified by the technique that carriers of each band are disposed symmetrically at every fundamental period. Firstly, the CRPWM method is reviewed and the theory on voltage balance of flying capacitors is analyzed. The proposed method is introduced and is verified through the experiment result.

  • This paper deals with a simple method in order to analyze and compare the harmonic characteristics in the multi-level inverter. Generally, the magnitude of harmonic components becomes different according to the multi-carrier Pulse Width Modulation(PWM) techniques, the modulation index($M_i$) and the switching frequency The previous papers analyzed the harmonic characteristics from the viewpoint of the space voltage vector. Hence, the calculation of the harmonic vector becomes more difficult and complex in 4-level or over 5-level. However, the proposed method has reduced an amount of calculation and simplified the process of it, using the relationship between the reference voltage and the output phase voltage to the load neutral point. It is applied to the 5-level cascade inverter and the harmonic characteristics for each multi-carrier PWM technique are compared through the simulation.

  • This paper presents a new short-term load forecasting system using data mining. Since the electric load has very different pattern according to the day, it definitely gives rise to the forecasting error if only one forecasting model is used. Thus, to resolve this problem, the fuzzy model-based classifier and predictor are proposed for the forecasting of the hourly electric load. The proposed classifier is the multi-input and multi-output fuzzy system of which the consequent part is composed of the Bayesian classifier. The proposed classifier attempts to categorize the input electric load into Monday, Tuesday$\sim$Friday, Saturday, and Sunday electric load, Then, we construct the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model-based predictor for each class. The parameter identification problem is converted into the generalized eigenvalue problem (GEVP) by formulating the linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, to show the feasibility of the proposed method, this paper provides the short-term load forecasting example.

  • An overload limiter is used to prevent its overturning accident during an operation of a movable crane. Recently the indirect measuring method, which measures hoisting load and overturning moment of overload limiter, demands instead of the existing method, which measures only hoisting load. The indirectly measuring method is how to conduct the hoisting load and overturning moment as measuring the load of hydraulic cylinder for a luffing driving of boom. So we need to develop the multi-angular pin type load cell with the measuring angle of ${\pm}10$ degree instead of the existing load cell with the measuring angle of ${\pm}2$ degree. In this study the finite element analysis is conducted to evaluate the effect of the aspect ratio of measuring cross section on the measuring limit of the load cell to develop the many-angular pin type load cell. For this investigation, the aspect ratio of measuring cross section and load applying angle were adopted as design parameters and the stresses of measuring part were evaluated for each parameter.

  • Load forecasting has always been essential to the operation and planning of power systems in deregulated electricity markets. Various methods have been proposed for load forecasting, and the neural network is one of the most widely accepted and used techniques. However, to obtain more accurate results, more information is needed as input variables, resulting in huge computational costs in the learning process. In this paper, to reduce training time in multi-layer perceptron-based short-term load forecasting, a graphics processing unit (GPU)-based computing method is introduced. The proposed approach is tested using the Korea electricity market historical demand data set. Results show that GPU-based computing greatly reduces computational costs.

  • In order to evaluate seismic performance of multi-degree-of-freedom bridge structure, moderate lateral load distribution methods using the pushover analysis were developed by many researchers. One of important variables to improve an accuracy of pushover analysis is lateral load distribution. In this study, pushover analyses were performed using the five types of lateral load distribution and seismic performances were evaluated by capacity spectrum method (CSM). To verify an accuracy of suggested lateral load distribution, the maximum displacement estimates by the CSM were compared to those by inelastic time history analysis.

  • Piles and pile foundations have been in common use since very early times. Usually function of piles is to carry load to a depth at which adequate support is available. Another important use of piles is to furnish lateral support and nowadays it is getting highlighted due to the wind load, lateral action of earthquake, and so on. After Broms (1964), many researchers have been suggested methods for estimating lateral capacity of pile. But each method assumes different earth pressure distribution and lateral earth pressure coefficient and it gives confusion to pile designers. Lateral earth pressure, essential in lateral capacity estimation, influenced by pile's behavior under lateral load. Prasad and Chari (1999) assumed the rotation point of pile and suggested an equation of ultimate lateral load capacity. In this study, we investigate the depth of rotation point in both homogeneous soil and multi layered soil, and compare to the estimation value by previous research. To model the pile set up in the sand, we use the chamber and small scale steel pile, and rain drop method. Test results show the rotation point is formed where the Prasad and Chari's estimation value, and they also show multi layered condition affects to location of rotation point to be scattered.

  • This paper discusses the elimination of DC voltage deviation and the enhancement of load current sharing accuracy in multi-terminal high voltage direct current (MT-HVDC) systems. In order to minimize the power line losses in different parallel network topologies and to insure the stable operation of systems, a decentralized control method based on a modified droop control is presented in this paper. Averaging the DC output voltage and averaging the output current of two neighboring converters are employed to reduce the congestion of the communication network in a control system, and the decentralized control method is implemented. By minimizing the power loss of the cable, the optimal load current sharing proportion is derived in order to achieve rational current sharing among different converters. The validity of the proposed method using a low bandwidth communication (LBC) network for different topologies is verified. The influence of the parameters of the power cable on the control system stability is analyzed in detail. Finally, transient response simulations and experiments are performed to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed control strategy for a MT-HVDC system.

  • In this paper, the implementation of proposed Automatic Load Balanced (ALB) PWM generation method is discussed. The conventional PWM generation method for cascade type H-bridge PWM converter causes the unbalance between each H-bridge converter, therefore the complex redundancy is required for the balancing of switching load of each converter, it consumes more computing power of controller. The ALB PWM method needs no additional switching redundancy for balancing, this paper discusses the implementation of ALB-PWM.
