  • Converters employing IGCTs usually require di/dt snubber and Over Voltage Protection (OVP) circuit for the protection of IGCTs and fast diodes. In these IGCT-based converters, conventional di/dt snubber and OVP circuit dissipates a significant amount of power loss. To reduce this loss of conventional di/dt snubber and OVP circuit, this paper proposes a flyback type snubber circuit with di/dt limiting characteristic for IGCT-based converters in medium voltage wind turbines. This flyback type snubber circuit simply consists of a flyback type transformer and diode. The proposed circuit reduces loss and simplifies conventional di/dt snubber by adopting the flyback type transformer. Loss analysis of conventional di/dt snubber and OVP circuit is performed for the 3-level NPC type back-to-back VSC supplied from grid voltage of 6.9kV. The proposed flyback type snubber circuit can save the loss of conventional snubber circuit in the 3L-NPC type back-to-back VSC in multi-MW MV wind turbine. The proposed snubber circuit has a fewer number of components and improved efficiency leading to a reliable and efficient wind turbine systems.

  • The use of high-gain-voltage step-up converters for distributed power generation systems is being popularized because of the need for new energy generation and power conversion technologies. In this study, a new constructed high-gain-boost DC-DC converter was proposed to coordinate low voltage output DC sources, such as PV or fuel cell systems, with high DC bus (380 V) lines. Compared with traditional boost DC-DC converters, the proposed converter can create higher gain and has wider input voltage range and lower voltage stress for power semiconductors and passive elements. Moreover, the proposed topology produces multilevel DC voltage output, which is the main advantage of the proposed topology. Steady-state analysis in continuous conduction mode of the proposed converter is discussed in detail. The practicability of the proposed DC-DC converter is presented by experimental results with a 300 W prototype converter.

  • In this study, the simultaneous use of a multi-level converter (MLC) as a DC-motor drive and as an active battery cell balancer is investigated. MLCs allow each battery cell in a battery pack to be independently switched on and off, thereby enabling the potential non-uniform use of battery cells. By exploiting this property and the brake regeneration phases in the drive cycle, MLCs can balance both the state of charge (SoC) and temperature differences between cells, which are two known causes of battery wear, even without reciprocating the coolant flow inside the pack. The optimal control policy (OP) that considers both battery pack temperature and SoC dynamics is studied in detail based on the assumption that information on the state of each cell, the schedule of reciprocating air flow and the future driving profile are perfectly known. Results show that OP provides significant reductions in temperature and in SoC deviations compared with the uniform use of all cells even with uni-directional coolant flow. Thus, reciprocating coolant flow is a redundant function for a MLC-based cell balancer. A specific contribution of this paper is the derivation of a state-space electro-thermal model of a battery submodule for both uni-directional and reciprocating coolant flows under the switching action of MLC, resulting in OP being derived by the solution of a convex optimization problem.

  • Phase-shedding, one famous technology for multi-phase converters, is implemented in a bi-directional multi-phase converter for ESS. It reduces active operating modules at light load to compensate efficiency. Shedding point, the load level where the converter changes the number of active modules, is important factor that affects the effect of phase-shedding. Loss analysis is done for determining shedding point. Phase-shedding hysteresis is applied so that excessive phase transition is avoided. This paper proposes shedding point correction where the shedding point is adaptively corrected by calculating a new shedding point.

  • In this paper a novel structure of multi-level converter for reducing ripple of output voltage is proposed. In the proposed converter Buck converters are connected in series to generate the output voltage and the ripple of output voltage can be reduced compared with the exiting Buck converter. Especially when outputting lower output voltage the number of acting switching elements is less and the result of ripple reducing is more obvious. It is expected that the converter proposed in this paper can be very useful in the case of wide range of output voltage.

  • This paper describes the design techniques of the data converters for Multiple-Valued Logic(MVL). A 3.3V low power 4 digit CMOS analog to quaternary converter (AQC) and quaternary to analog converter (QAC) mainly designed with the neuron MOS down literal circuit block has been introduced. The neuron MOS down literal architecture allows the designed AQC and QAC to accept analog and 4 level voltage inputs, and enables the proposed circuits to have the multi-threshold properity. Low power consumption of the AQC and QAC are achieved by utilizing the proposed architecture.

  • This paper proposed the single phase multi-level PWM AC/DC converter using binary combine which controls input current by combining buck converters to improve input current characteristic, and confirmed its validity throughout simulation and experiment. This method, which is multiplying and duplicating output of converter of equal capacity, has the advantage of being able to control unit power factor of input current and reducing of the problem caused by high frequency switching, and appling to high power converter because filter is not necessary etc.

  • This paper proposes the feedforward compensation method of output voltage with 3phase AC/DC PWM converter on DC distribution system for improved response. AC/DC PWM converter on DC distribution is required power supply of high quality because of renewable energy sources and load links. In general, Feedforward compensation method of 3phase AC/DC PWM converter receives the sensor input to the output current, load power. Resulting, error of the sensing values and communication cause time delay. Therefore, Feedforward compensation method through only the output voltage is proposed in this paper. The feedforward compensation method through only the output voltage can be applied to the two-level AC/DC PWM converters, as well as multi-level converter or inverter.

  • Multi-pulse topology of converters using elementary six-pulse GTO - VSC (gate turn off based voltage source converter) operated under fundamental frequency switching (FFS) control is widely adopted in high power rating static synchronous compensators (STATCOM). Practically, a 48-pulse ($6{\times}8$ pulse) configuration is used with the phase angle control algorithm employing proportional and integral (PI) control methodology. These kinds of controllers, for example the ${\pm}80MVAR$ compensator at Inuyama switching station, KEPCO, Japan, employs two stages of magnetics viz. intermediate transformers (as many as VSCs) and a main coupling transformer to minimize harmonics distortion in the line and to achieve a desired operational efficiency. The magnetic circuit needs altogether nine transformers of which eight are phase shifting transformers (PST) used in the intermediate stage, each rating equal to or more than one eighth of the compensator rating, and the other one is the main coupling transformer having a power rating equal to that of the compensator. In this paper, a two-level 48-pulse ${\pm}100MVAR$ STATCOM is proposed where eight, six-pulse GTO-VSC are employed and magnetics is simplified to single-stage using four transformers of which three are PSTs and the other is a normal transformer. Thus, it reduces the magnetics to half of the value needed in the commercially available compensator. By adopting the simple PI-controllers, the model is simulated in a MATLAB environment by SimPowerSystems toolbox for voltage regulation in the transmission system. The simulation results show that the THD levels in line voltage and current are well below the limiting values specified in the IEEE Std 519-1992 for harmonic control in electrical power systems. The controller performance is observed reasonably well during capacitive and inductive modes of operation.
