  • Separation control has been performed using the multi-array/multi-location synthetic jet on NACA23012 at high angle of attack. The flow control using single synthetic jet shows that stall characteristics can be substantially improved with delayed separation point. Theses results show the characteristic of unsteady flow of single synthetic jet. Beside, we researched on multi-array synthetic jet to obtain applicable synthetic jet velocity. Multi-location synthetic jet is proposed to eliminate small vortex on suction surface of airfoil. With the results, we concluded that the flow around airfoil is stable by high frequency synthetic jet with elimination of small vortex and confirmation of stable flow. Moreover, performance of multi-array/multi-location synthetic jet can be improved by changing phase angle of multi-location synthetic jet.

  • Separation control has been performed using synthetic jets on airfoil at high angle of attack. Computed results demonstrated that stall characteristics and control surface performance could be substantially improved by resizing separation vortices. It was observed that the actual flow control mechanism and flow structure is fundamentally different depending on the range of synthetic jet frequency. For low frequency range, small vortices due to synthetic jet penetrated to the large leading edge separation vortex, and as a result, the size of the leading edge vortex was remarkably reduced. For high frequency range, however, small vortex did not grow up enough to penetrate into the leading edge separation vortex. Instead, synthetic jet firmly attached the local flow and influenced the circulation of the virtual airfoil shape which is the combined shape of the main airfoil with the separation vortex.

  • An experimental study is conducted to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a multi-tube inserted impinging jet. Four different multi-tube devices are tested for various nozzle-to-plate distance. Flow visualization by smoke-wire method and velocity measurements using a hot-wire anemometer are applied to analyze the flow characteristics of the multi-tube insert impinging jet. The local heat transfer coefficients of the multi-tube inserted impinging jet on the impingement surface are measured and the results are compared to those of the conventional jet. In multi-tube inserted system the multi-tube length plays an important role in the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the jet flow. With multi-tube insert of I3d4 and I6d4 which has relatively longer tube length than the multi-tube-exit of I3d1 and I6d1, the flow maintains its increased velocity far downstream due to interaction between adjacent flows. For the small H/D of 4, the local heat transfer coefficients of multi-tube inserted impinging jet are much higher than those of the conventional jet because the flow has higher velocity and turbulent intensity by the use of the multi-tube device. At large gap distance of H/D=12, also higher heat transfer rates are obtained by installing multi-tube insert except multi-tube insert of I3d1.

  • A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-impingement jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. To study the flow characteristics especially in the jet flow region, three different distributions of mass flow rate at 5-jet exits were assumed. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Calculations drew the following items as conclusion. 1) A periodical fully developed flow was observed from the third protrusion. This was also observed from previous experimentally by Whidden at al. The Nessult number at the protrusion surface increased mildly as going downstream. 2) The low Reynolds number turbulence model of Launder and Sharma was found to be adequate for the prediction of fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of two dimensional multi-jet configuration. 3) The Nusselt number at the protrusion surface was nearly proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number.

  • A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. Three different distributions of mass-flow rate at 5 jet exits were assumed to see their effects upon the flow characteristics, especially in the jet-flow region. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Calculations drew the following items as conclusion. 1) The development of the free jets issued from downstream jets was hindered by the crossflow formed due to jets. Consequently, the free jet was developed into the channel flow without any evident symptom of impingement jet flow characteristics 2) The crossflow induced the pressure gradient along the cross section of jet exits and the value of the pressure gradient increased as going downstream. The crossflow generated also the turbulent kinetic energy as it collied with the downstream jets. 3) The skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was affected more by the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits rather than by the Reynolds number. The skin friction coefficient was inversely proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number, regardless of flow regime when a fully developed flow was formed in the jet flow region. 4) The distribution of the skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was found to be controlled by adjusting the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits.

  • The characteristics of center-driver jet pump which have multi-nozzle were studied in this research. Jet nozzles are connected outside of the bend rather than inserted in the bend in order to transport solid materials or fish without any harm. Jet pumps having one nozzle, two nozzles, four nozzles, and sixteen nozzles were tested in this study. The efficiencies and performances of jet pumps were studied for several nozzles shape, for three different mixing chamber shapes, for two suction area shapes. All the efficiency curves for these cases are presented in this paper.

  • In this study, computational analyses are carried out to investigate the interference flows and the aerodynamic characteristics of a hit-to-kill intercepter due to lateral jets at medium altitude. In addition, the analyses are performed for air and multi-species gas used in the side jet. The results indicate that the position of the barrel shock are shifted upstream and the structure of the shock wave are changed for the multi-species jet when compared to the air jet. As a result, the high pressure region with multi-species jet moves forward and the pitching moment is higher under the same flow condition. Moreover, the inclusion of high temperature effects makes drastic changes in pressure distribution. The jet width is much bigger, and the jet diffuses over wider range in medium altitude than in low altitude, because of the low density of the freestream.
