  • Routing through a backbone, which is responsible for performing and managing multipoint communication, reduces the communication overhead and overall energy consumption in wireless sensor networks. However, the backbone nodes will need extra functionality and therefore consume more energy compared to the other nodes. The power consumption imbalance among sensor nodes may cause a network partition and failures where the transmission from some sensors to the sink node could be blocked. Hence optimal construction of the backbone is one of the pivotal problems in sensor network applications and can drastically affect the network's communication energy dissipation. In this paper a distributed algorithm is proposed to generate backbone trees through robust multi-hop clusters in wireless sensor networks. The main objective is to form a properly designed backbone through multi-hop clusters by considering energy level and degree of each node. Our improved cluster head selection method ensures that energy is consumed evenly among the nodes in the network, thereby increasing the network lifetime. Comprehensive computer simulations have indicated that the newly proposed scheme gives approximately 10.36% and 24.05% improvements in the performances related to the residual energy level and the degree of the cluster heads respectively and also prolongs the network lifetime.

  • An accurate positioning estimation in the wireless sensor networks (WSN) is very important in which each sensor node is aware of neighbor conditions. The multi-hop positioning estimation technique is considered as one of the suitable techniques for the WSN with many low power devices. However geographical holes, where there is no sensor node, may severely decrease the positioning accuracy so that the positioning error can be beyond the tolerable range. Therefore in this paper, we analyze error factors of DV-hop and hole effect to obtain node's accurate position. The proposed methods include boundary node detection, distance level adjustment, and unreliable anchor elimination. The simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve higher positioning accuracy using the hole detection and enhanced distance calculation methods compared with the conventional DV-hop.

  • Since high packet losses occur in multi-hop transmission of wireless sensor networks, reliable data transmission is required. Especially, in case of event-driven data, a loss recovery mechanism should be provided for lost packets. Because retransmission for lost packets is requested to a node that caches the packets, the caching node should maintains all of data for transmission in its buffer. However, nodes of wireless sensor networks have limited resources. Thus, both a loss recovery mechanism and a buffer management technique are provided for reliable data transmission in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we propose a buffer management technique at a caching position determined by a loss recovery mechanism. The caching position of data is determined according to desirable reliability for the data. In addition, we validate the performance of the proposed method through computer simulations.

  • A trust-aware secure routing protocol (TSRP) for wireless sensor networks is proposed in this paper to defend against varieties of attacks. First, each node calculates the comprehensive trust values of its neighbors based on direct trust value, indirect trust value, volatilization factor, and residual energy to defend against black hole, selective forwarding, wormhole, hello flood, and sinkhole attacks. Second, any source node that needs to send data forwards a routing request packet to its neighbors in multi-path mode, and this continues until the sink at the end is reached. Finally, the sink finds the optimal path based on the path's comprehensive trust values, transmission distance, and hop count by analyzing the received packets. Simulation results show that TSRP has lower network latency, smaller packet loss rate, and lower average network energy consumption than ad hoc on-demand distance vector routing and trust based secure routing protocol.

  • To minimize energy consumption, most of MAC Protocols in WSNs exploit low duty cycling. Among those, RMAC [4] allows a node to transmit a data packet for multiple hops in a single duty cycle, which is made possible by exploiting a control frame named Pioneer (PION) in setting up the path. In this paper, we present a MAC Protocol called Hop Extended MAC (HE-MAC) that transmits the data packet for more multiple hops in a single duty cycle. It employs an EXP (Explorer) frame to set up the multiple hop transmission, which contains the information of the maximum hop that a packet can be transmitted. With the use of the information in EXP and an internal state of Ready to Receive (RTR), HEMAC extends the relay of the packet beyond the termination of the data period by two more hops compared to RMAC. Along with our proposed adaptive sleeping method, it also reduces power consumption and handles heavy traffic efficiently without experiencing packet inversion observed in RMAC. We analytically obtain the packet delivery latency in HE-MAC and evaluate the performance through ns-2 simulations. Compared to RMAC, HE-MAC achieves 14% less power consumption and 20% less packet delay on average for a random topology of 300 nodes.

  • We propose HERAH(Hierarchical Energy-Aware Routing Algorithm for Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks) that is the hierarchical routing algorithm in WSNs and is established on heterogeneous environment. HERAH performs CH selection by considering residual energy level and uses multi-hop communication within cluster. So, HERAH makes improvements in the energy savings and the network lifetime compared with LEACH.

  • Quorum-based algorithms are widely used for solving several problems in mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and wireless sensor networks (WSN). Several quorum-based protocols are proposed for multi-hop ad hoc networks that each one has its pros and cons. Quorum-based protocol (QEC or QPS) is the first study in the asynchronous sleep scheduling protocols. At the time, most of the proposed protocols were non-adaptive ones. But nowadays, adaptive quorum-based protocols have gained increasing attention, because we need protocols which can change their quorum size adaptively with network conditions. In this paper, we first introduce the most popular quorum systems and explain quorum system properties and its performance criteria. Then, we present a comparative and comprehensive survey of the non-adaptive and adaptive quorum-based protocols which are subsequently discussed in depth. We also present the comparison of different quorum systems in terms of the expected quorum overlap size (EQOS) and active ratio. Finally, we summarize the pros and cons of current adaptive and non-adaptive quorum-based protocols.

  • Conventional 1-1-1 cooperative protocol offers path-loss gain as advantage of multi-hop and spatial diversity which is equivalent to MIMO system. This protocol is enable to get higher reliability and reduction of power consumption than those of the single-hop or multi-hop. But the 1-1-1 cooperative protocol get only the diversity order 2 and limited path-loss reduction gain because this protocol has a single cooperative relay. We propose 1-2-1 cooperative protocol using two cooperative relays R1, R2. The 1-2-1 cooperative protocol can improve path-loss reduction and increase diversity order 3. Moreover, the cooperative relay R2 attains diversity order 2. The signaling method in transmission uses DF (Decode and Forward) or DR (Decode and Reencode) and 1-2-1 DF/DR cooperative protocol are applied to clustering based wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Simulations are performed to evaluate the performance of the protocols under Rayleigh fading channel plus AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise).

  • Broadcast of sink node is used for network management, data collection by query and synchronization in wireless sensor networks. Simple flooding scheme induces the broadcast storm problem. The MPR based broadcast schemes reduce redundant retransmission of broadcast packets. MPR is a set of one hop neighbor nodes which have to relay broadcast message to cover all two hop neighbors. Though MPR can reduce redundant retransmission remarkably, it still suffers from energy waste problem caused by collision and duplicate packets reception. This paper proposes a new MPR based sink broadcast scheme using 3-channel. The proposed scheme reduces energy consumption by avoiding duplicate packet reception, while increases reliability by reducing collision probability remarkably. The results of analysis and simulation show that the proposed scheme is more efficient in energy consumption compared to the MPR based scheme. The result also shows that the proposed scheme reduces delivery latency by evading a contention with other relay nodes and improves reliability of broadcast message delivery by reducing collision probability.
