The early detection of intravenous (IV) infiltration is necessary to minimize the injury caused by the infiltration, which is one of the most important tasks for nurses. For detecting early infiltration in patients receiving invasive vein treatment, bioelectrical impedance was measured using multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance. The impedance decreased significantly at infiltration, and then decreased gradually over time after infiltration. The relative impedance at 20 kHz decreased remarkably at infiltration, and then gradually decreased thereafter. In addition, the impedance ratio increased temporarily at infiltration and then gradually decreased over time. Furthermore, the impedance at each frequency decreased quantitatively over time. This indicates that IV solution leaking from the vein due to infiltration accumulates in the subcutaneous tissues. Moreover, slopes of log Z vs. log f differently decreased with increasing log f, indicating that the impedance exhibits different responses depending on the frequency.

In order to measure the segmental impedance of the body, a bioelectrical impedance measurement system (BIMS) using multi-frequency applying method and two-electrode method was implemented in this study. The BIMS was composed of constant current source, automatic gain control, and multi-frequency generation units. Three experiments were performed using the BIMS and a commercial impedance analyzer (CIA). First, in order to evaluate the performance of the BIMS, four RC circuits connected with a resistor and capacitor in serial and/or parallel were composed. Bioelectrical impedance (BI) was measured by applying multi-frequencies -5, 10, 50, 100, 150, 200, 300, 400, and 500 KHz - to each circuit. BI values measured by the BIMS were in good agreement with those obtained by the CIA for four RC circuits. Second, after measuring BI at each frequency by applying multi-frequency to the left and right forearm and the popliteal region of the body, BI values measured by the BIMS were compared to those acquired by the CIA. Third, when the distance between electrodes was changed to 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 cm, BI by the BIMS was also compared to BI from the CIA. In addition, BI of extracellular fluid (ECF) was measured at each frequency ranging from 10 to 500 KHz. BI of intracellular fluid (ICF) was calculated by subtracting BI of ECF measured at 500 kHZ from BI measured at seven frequencies ranging from 50 to 500 KHz. BI of ICF and ECF decreased as the frequency increased. BI of ICF sharply decreased at frequencies above 300 KHz.
Lightning has a broad frequency spectrum from DC to a few MHz. Consequently, the high frequency performance of grounding systems for protection against lightning should be evaluated, with the distributed parameter circuit model in a uniform soil being used to simulate grounding impedances. This paper proposes a simulation method which applies the distributed parameter circuit model for the frequency-dependent impedance of vertically driven ground rods by considering multi-layered soil structures where ground rods are buried. The Matlab program was used to calculate the frequency-dependent ground impedances for two ground rods of different lengths. As a result, an increase of the length of ground rod is not always followed by a decrease of grounding impedance, at least at a high frequency. The results obtained using the newly proposed simulation method considering multi-layered soil structures are in good agreement with the measured results.
In this paper, we propose a multi-impedance changes localization method of on-voltage underground power cable using the wavelet transform based time-frequency domain reflectometry (WTFDR). To localize the impedance change in on-voltage power cable, the TFDR is the most suitable among reflectometries because the inductive coupler is used to inject the reference signal to the live cable. At this time, the actual on-voltage power cable has multi-impedance changes such as the automatic section switches and the auto load transfer switches. However, when the multi-impedance changes are generated in the close range, the conventional TFDR has the cross term interference problem because of the nonlinear characteristics of the Wigner-Ville distribution. To solve the problem, the wavelet transform (WT) is used because it has the linearity. That is, using WTFDR, the cross term interference is not generated in multi-impedance changes due to the linearity of the WT. To confirm the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method, the actual experiments are carried out for the on-voltage underground power cable.
Objectives : The object of this study is to evaluate and develop the system that reflects acupoints electrical properties by the multi-frequency using the SPAC (Single Power Alternative Current) stimulation method based on BIA (Bioelectrical impedance method). Methods : The 12 channel meridian impedance measurement system (MIMS) was designed, which sets multi-frequency with 10 steps (1~10kHz). To check acupoints electrical properties, impedance of acupoints were measured from 11 acupoints selected from the LU and ST meridians. Results : Regarding distribution of measurement values by multi-frequencies, we found the lowest response at 1kHz was in common. But frequency bands which represent the highest response at each acupoint were various. Measurement values of each acupoint by multi-frequencies were expressed similar distribution (P<0.05). Also we could check same frequency band which showed the highest response at left/right equal acupoints (P<0.05). Conclusions : Through change of acupoints electrical properties by multi-frequency stimulation, we checked oriental medical diagnostic possibilities by using this system. We would progress variable clinical trials with this system for oriental medical diagnosis.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a correlation between the segmental bio-impedance measurement with the frequency modulations and the life-style disease of obesity. An obesity is not simply the factor for estimating the life-style disease of obesity, but also the risk factor occurring. There are many methods (BMI, WHR, Waist, CT, DEXA, BIA, etc.) for measuring a degree of obesity; the bio-impedance measurement is more economic and more effective than others. The physical examination, the blood test, the medical imaging diagnosis and the bio-impedancemeasurementswithmultiple frequencies for each body parts have been conducted for 77 people. The estimated value has been calculated through a segmental bio-impedance model based on multi-frequency that was created to reflect the highest correlation by analyzing correlation with linear regression analysis method for the measured bio-impedance and the risk factors. Then we compared with the clinical diagnosis. In case of high level cholesterol, low HDL-C and high LDL-C for life-style disease, the sensitivity is 80~100%and the specificity is 83~100%. This study has shown conclusively that bio-impedance can be a possible predictor to analyze the disease risk rate of population and individual health maintenance. And also the multi-frequency segmental bio-impedance can be used as early predictor to estimate the life-style disease of obesity.
Objectives : The purpose of this paper was to suggest new diagnostic method that was to supersede the estimation of electrical properties at acupoints. Thus, we developed the multi- frequencies bioelectrical impedance measurement system so as to analyze the state of bio-ions in body fluid as body compositions, not skin impedance at acupoint. Methods : At low frequency, the current does not penetrate the cell membrane and at high frequency, the current passes through both intracellular and extracellular fluid because of the decreas of cell membrane impedance. To confirm the reflection of composition in extracellular fluid or intracellular fluid of segment such as acupoint, the system was developed to detect the acupoint potential between adjacent two points in the area of LU3, LU4 and LU9 using 5,50 and 200KHz. Results : The detected acupoint potential has been decreased according to elevation of frequency. As a result of correlation of left/right identical acupoint, we observed a high correlation of three types of acupoint potential at multi-frequencies. Moreover, we observed the low correlation at 5KHz, and that was a significant factor to be considered as unbalanced relationship of identical acupoints. Conclusions : On the basis of meridian theoretical point of view, we may infer the acupoint's physiological composition using the multi-frequencies bioelectrical impedance measurement system.
Two impedance imaging systems of multi-frequency electrical impedance tomography (MFEIT) and magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (MREIT) are described. MFEIT utilizes boundary measurements of current-voltage data at multiple frequencies to reconstruct cross-sectional images of a complex conductivity distribution (${\sigma}+i{\omega}{\varepsilon}$) inside the human body. The inverse problem in MFEIT is ill-posed due to the nonlinearity and low sensitivity between the boundary measurement and the complex conductivity. In MFEIT, we therefore focus on time- and frequency-difference imaging with a low spatial resolution and high temporal resolution. Multi-frequency time- and frequency-difference images in the frequency range of 10 Hz to 500 kHz are presented. In MREIT, we use an MRI scanner to measure an internal distribution of induced magnetic flux density subject to an injection current. This internal information enables us to reconstruct cross-sectional images of an internal conductivity distribution with a high spatial resolution. Conductivity image of a postmortem canine brain is presented and it shows a clear contrast between gray and white matters. Clinical applications for imaging the brain, breast, thorax, abdomen, and others are briefly discussed.
We have developed a multi-channel, multi-frequency EIT system with operating frequency of 10Hz to 500KHz. The number of digital voltmeters using phase-sensitive demodulation can be varied from 8 to 64 and we found that 16 and 32-channels are most practical. This paper describes the design, implementation, and construction of 16 and 32-channel systems. The performance of the system was thoroughly tested and we found that CMRR of the developed voltmeter is about 85dB with $100{\Omega}$ unbalancing series resistor. The SNR is greater than 99.6dB and the output impedance of the constant current source is $1{\Omega}W$ at least for all frequencies. Imaging experiments using a banana with frequency-dependent conductivity and permittivity show that frequency-difference imaging is possible using the developed system. Future works of animal and human experiments are discussed.
In this paper, the design formulas for bandpass filters using parallel coupled stepped impedance resonators(SIR) are derived. General content about basic feature of stepped impedance resonators(SIR) is represented. The filters and duplexer using stepped impedance resonators(SIR) have been designed and realized with the presented design method at IMT-2000 frequency band Simulations have used serenade circuit simulation and HFSS EM-simulation. We were showed excellent agreements between SIR design theory and simulation results on the multi-layer filter/duplexer.
