  • This research proposes a new advanced control method and demonstrates its realization in part. By incorporating shape machining and cutting force control at a time, this integrated scheme makes it possible to machine a desired shape and avoid the trouble of programming feedrate and spindle speed before machining and also reduce the shape error. The main idea proposed to achieve those goals consists in giving commanded path and desired cutting force at the same time. which makes it possible for position and force controller to distribute the corresponding velocity of individual axes and main spindle by an appropriate interpolation. That indicates we can replace the built-in interpolator of commercial machine tools by the developed algorithm.

  • Monolayers such as self-assembled monolayer (SAM) have received considerable attention to reduce stiction and friction in micro-devices and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Various organic molecular films were investigated to obtain better understanding of their tribological behaviors and adhesion property. The organic molecular films studied in this work are: epoxysilane SAMs, octadecyltricholosilane (OST), multi-layers composed of epoxysilane SAMs, poly〔styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene〕(SEBS) and compound of epoxy resin and poly (paraphenylene) (EP/PPP). The pull-off forces of these films were also obtained from force-distance curves measured in static mode of operation of atomic force microscope (AFM). Tribological tests were conducted with a ball-on-flat reciprocating friction tester. The OST showed the lowest pull-off force, indicating its low adhesion property. It was revealed that, the OST, EP/PPP and the multi-layer of epoxysilane SAMs, SEBS and EP/PPP exhibited good tribological properties at the lower load (0.3 N) whereas the OST showed best performance at the higher load (1.8 N).

  • With a newly developed multi-force-balance system(MFB), a twin-tower structure was studied for its wind-induced responses. The MFB system allowed the twin towers, which were linked structurally, to be treated as a single structural system with its corresponding modes of vibration involving coupled motions of the two towers. The towers were also studied using a more conventional force balance approach in which each tower was treated as an isolated structure, i.e., as though no structural link existed. Comparison of the results reveals how the wind loads between the towers are redistributed through the structural links and the modal couplings. The results suggest that although the structural links usually have beneficial impacts on wind-induced response, they may also play a negative role if the frequency ratios of pair modes are near 1.0.

  • The high-frequency force-balance (HFFB) technique and its subsequent improvements are reviewed in this paper, including a discussion about nonlinear mode shape corrections, multi-force balance measurements, and using HFFB model to identify aeroelastic parameters. To apply the HFFB technique in engineering practice, various validation studies have been conducted. This paper presents the results from an analytical validation study for a simple building with nonlinear mode shapes, three experimental validation studies for more complicated buildings, and a field measurement comparison for a super-tall building in Hong Kong. The results of these validations confirm that the improved HFFB technique is generally adequate for engineering applications. Some technical limitations of HFFB are also discussed in this paper, especially for higher-order mode response that could be considerable for super tall buildings.

  • A theoretical calculation model for ship stern bearings with large hull deformation is established and validated theoretically and experimentally. A hull simulation model is established to calculate hull deformations corresponding to the reaction force of stern bearings under multi-factor and multi-operating conditions. The results show that in the condition of wave load, hull deformation shows randomness; the aft stern tube bearing load obeys the Gaussian distribution and its value increases significantly compared with the load under static, and the probability of aft stern tube bearing load greater than 1 is 65.7%. The influence laws and levels between hull deformation and bearing reaction force are revealed, and suggestions for ship stern bearing specifications are proffered accordingly.

  • A multi-objective optimization approach is presented for force design of tensegrity structures. The geometry of the structure is given a priori. The design variables are the member forces, and the objective functions are the lowest eigenvalue of the tangent stiffness matrix that is to be maximized, and the deviation of the member forces from the target values that is to be minimized. The multi-objective programming problem is converted to a series of single-objective programming problems by using the constraint approach. A set of Pareto optimal solutions are generated for a tensegrity grid to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents the development of a deadweight type 6-component force/moment generator for estimating characteristics of multi-component loadcell. Several new methods in moment generation are introduced in order to produce accurate force / moment and to minimize coupling effect between each force or moment components. In order to verify the reliability of the calibration system developed, estimation of the method for generating moment components and cross measurements between force or moment components are carried out utilizing a commercial torque cell and both-ends fixed beam designed in this paper.

  • Face milling is required to study cutting process with a view of multipoint cutter. This experimental study mainly deals with the single and multi-insert cutting characteristics using coated tool. Because metal cutting of the single and multi-insert has a large relation to the improvement of productivity, the economic cutting process can be achieved by the analysis of proper metal cutting mechanism. Therefore, machining characteristics of face molling in this paper has been studied by investigating the role of different insert number which is concerned with mean cutting force, the RMS values of AE(acoustic emission) signal, tool life and surface roughness in milling SS 41 and SUS 304. The cutting force and AE signal are monitored to make an analysis of cutting process. The surface roughness of the specimens machined by inserts of different numbers is measured at different speeds, feeds and depth of cut. The width of flank wear is also observed.

  • This study describes the real-time measurement system which consist of multi-components load cell and linear motor. Operationg and data acquisition is controlled by PC. Multi-components load cell measures simultaneously the vertical force Fz and frictional force Fx when contactors move on sample surface. Linear motor is used to translate with constant speed without vibration. The frictional coefficient is calculated by Matlab$^{TM}$. The frictional coefficients between Al. plates. and fingertip and fabrics are measured.d.
