  • In this paper we propose a fast and precise control algorithm for a mobile robot, which aims at the self-tuning control applying two multi-layered neural networks to the structure of computed torque method. Through this algorithm, the nonlinear terms of external disturbance caused by variable task environments and dynamic model errors are estimated and compensated in real time by a long term neural network which has long learning period to extract the non-linearity globally. A short term neural network which has short teaming period is also used for determining optimal gains of PID compensator in order to come over the high frequency disturbance which is not known a priori, as well as to maintain the stability. To justify the global effectiveness of this algorithm where each of the long term and short term neural networks has its own functions, simulations are peformed. This algorithm can also be utilized to come over the serious shortcoming of neural networks, i.e., inefficiency in real time.

  • Reheating furnace is an essential facility of a rod mill plant where a billet is heated to the required rolling temperature so that it can be milled to produce wire. Sometimes, it is also necessary to control a transient billet temperature pattern according to the material characteristics to prevent a wire from breaking. Though it is very important objective to obtain a correct information of a billet temperature during furnace operation. Consequently, a billet temperature profile must be estimated. In this paper, a billet heat transfer model based on FEM (Finite Element Method) with spatially distributed emission factors is proposed and a measurement is also carried out for two different furnace operation conditions. Finally, the difference between the model outputs and the measurements is minimized by using the new optimization algorithm named uDEAS(Univariate Dynamic Encoding Algorithm for Searches) with multi-step tuning strategy. Hence, the information of billet temperatures can be obtained by using proposed model on various furnace operation conditions.

  • This paper presents an implementation of real-time speaker localization using audio-visual information. Four channels of microphone signals are processed to detect vertical as well as horizontal speaker positions. At first short-time average magnitude difference function(AMDF) signals are used to determine whether the microphone signals are human voices or not. And then the orientation and distance information of the sound sources can be obtained through interaural time difference and interaual level differences. Finally visual information by a camera helps get finer tuning of the speaker orientation. Experimental results of the real-time localization system show that the performance improves to 99.6% compared to the rate of 88.8% when only the audio information is used.

  • Multipass Ti:sapphire amplifier for the light source of DIAL was developed with an angular-multi-plexing, and the characteristics of output energy and spectra were investigated. As the characteristics of two-stage multipass amplifier, the maximum output energy was 22 mJ and the amplification gain was 20 dB on the wavelength of 790 nm. At that condition, output efficiency of the pumping energy was 18 percent. We obtained $0.15cm^{-1}$ (9.4 pm) as a spectral linewidth in the tuning range of 705~845 nm.

  • Focused electron beams with high energy acceleration are versatile probes. Focused electron beams can be used for high-resolution imaging and multi-mode nanofabrication, in combination with, molecular precursor delivery, in an electron microscopy environment. A high degree of control with atomic-to-microscale resolution, a focused electron beam allows for precise engineering of a graphene-based field-effect transistor (FET). In this study, the effect of electron irradiation on a graphene FET was systematically investigated. A separate evaluation of the electron beam induced transport properties at the graphene channel and the graphene-metal contacts was conducted. This provided on-demand strategies for tuning transfer characteristics of graphene FETs by focused electron beam irradiation.

  • We propose a fiber grating sensor system for condition monitoring of large scale wind turbine blades. For the feasibility test of the proposed sensor system, a down-scaled wind turbine has been constructed and experimented. Fiber grating sensors were attached on a blade surface for distributed strain and temperature measurements. An optical rotary joint was used to transmit optical signals between the FBG sensor array and the signal processing unit. Instead of broadband light source, we used a wavelength-swept fiber laser to obtain high output power density. A spectrometer demodulation is used to alleviate the nonlinear wavelength tuning problem of the laser source. With the proposed sensor system we could measure dynamic strain and temperature profiles at multi-positions of rotating wind turbine blades.

  • This paper presents a class of discrete adaptive controller that can be applied to a plant without sufficient a priori information. It is well known that the GMV(Generalized Minmum Variance) contrlller performs satisfactorily if the plant time delay is known. By introducing the long-range prediction into the GMV controller, robustness to the time delay can be improved, although optimality is lost. Such an idea motivates a predictive control system to be proposed here, where the system minimizes multi-stage cost via the GMV approach. Moreover, the detuning control weight is determined by an on-line tuning method. It is shown that robustness, computational efficiency, and performance of the resulting control system are improved as compared with those of the GPC(Generalized Predictive Control)system.

  • Contents 1 Abstract- In the thermal power plant, there are six manipulated variables; main steam flow, feedwater flow, air flow, spray flow, fuel flow, and gas recirculation flow. Therefore, the thermal power plant control system is a multi-input and output system. In the control system, the main steam temperature typically is regulated by the fuel flow rate and the spray flow rate, and the reheater steam temperature is regulated by the gas recirculation flow rate. Up to the present time, the PID controller has been used to operate this system. This paper focuses on the characteristic comparison of the PID controller, the modified 2-DOF PID Controller on the DCS, in order to design an optimal...

  • This paper presents an efficient evolutionary method to optimize the gain ripple of multi-pumps photonic crystal fiber Raman amplifier using the Fuzzy Adaptive Modified PSO (FAMPSO) algorithm. The original PSO has difficulties in premature convergence, performance and the diversity loss in optimization as well as appropriate tuning of its parameters. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid algorithm is demonstrated and results are compared with the PSO algorithm. It is shown that FAMPSO has a high quality solution, superior convergence characteristics and shorter computation time.

  • A control algorithm for multi-stage dampers is developed based on the mode skyhook control concept, and implemented on the full vehicle system environment. The test vehicle system is equipped with the real time controller, four-stage variable dampers and sensors. The real time controller is developed using a digital signal processor(DSP), digital I/O, A/D and D/A converters. The dampers are driven by the electromagnetic actuators of less than 20 msec response time. The sensors include accelerometers, relative displacement transducers, and steering wheel rate sensors, etc. Through a series of tests in laboratory and proving ground, the performance of the semi-active suspension system is evaluated and it is shown that the vehicle dynamic characteristics is improved with the developed damping system. Futhermore, the parameter tuning methods to enhance vehicle dynamic performance are propsoed.
