A Study on Fire Risk of Multi-family Apartment Houses Constructed with the Exterior of the EIFS (외단열시스템 외장재로 시공된 다세대 공동주택의 화재위험에 관한 연구)

  • EIFS system has the merit of low construction cost and shortening of construction period by easy-to-construct. For such reasons as mentioned above, it has been using across the board such as residential building, school, officetel, building remodeling and so on. It, however, has a drawback of generating plenty of combustible gases from styrofoam which is main material of it. In this regard, measures to prevent losses of life from combustible gases are needed urgently as fires on residential buildings applied EIFS caused human casualties resulted from combustible gases. With respect to the above, this study will analyze the risk of fires on residential facilities, such as multi-family apartment houses, schools and other buildings, applied EIFS which is the most frequently used as material of exterior wall and suggest countermeasure of it.

  • It is undeniable that urban greenspace is the soul of a city. Conventional urban greenspace such as parks, community gardens, playgrounds etc. located within a city reduce the negative effects of pollution, play a major role in the survival of the urban ecosystem, and promote healthy lifestyles. Today, 55% of the world's population lives in urban areas, which is expected to increase to 68% by 2050. Projections show that urbanization and the gradual migration to urban areas combined with the fast growth of the world's population, could add another 2.5 billion people to urban areas by 2050 and almost 90% of this increase will take place in Asia(UN, 2018). As a result, many plots in the cities are and will continue to be occupied with buildings to provide residential support to the increased population. This will dangerously decrease urban greenspaces. Moreover, worldwide, food crisis, energy crisis, and social crisis is posing a great threat to the existence of mankind. Additionally, the COVID - 19 has introduced a new lifestyle where from work culture to community configuration has drastically transformed. In this scenario, residential buildings will have to serve more than just providing privacy and shelter. As urban greenspaces are being occupied by concrete residential buildings, these buildings will have to compensate for the percentage of urban green they are destroying and the issues they are imposing in the process. The goal of this thesis is to design, architecturally define and, categorize comprehensive 'sustainable Greenspace'(S.G.S) for the multi-family housing scenario. These will be different than the conventional green (veranda, rooftop green) we commonly see in residential buildings. An old, dilapidated apartment building will be the target of remodeling to fulfill the purpose of this thesis.

A Case Study on the Housing Environment of Marriage Immigrants in Daegu City (결혼이민자의 주거환경에 관한 사례연구 -대구시 거주 결혼이민자를 중심으로-)

  • With the recent increase in the number of foreign settlers in our country, a societal system is needed which they can adapt to more easily. The results of the study were as follows. First, from the result of analyzing the 171 programs of the multi-cultural family support system, it could be seen that in order for the marriage immigrants to more successfully adapt, various programs are needed. Second, when the study had an interview with 13 marriage immigrants from China, Vietnam and Philippine about their adaptation to residential environment, they had a high satisfaction with their residential environment when their spouses' educational level was high. In, they appraised that South Korea was superior to their native land in scale and facilities of buildings and the buildings of their native land were superior to those in South Korea in terms of soundproof applications, natural lighting and ventilation, which were indoor environmental elements. Third, they were generally satisfied with their residential environment. However, they stated that it took 6 months~ two years to adapt to the Korean residential environment because of the differences in the residential environment compared to their homeland. A based on the research result, the housing adviser is necessary in the marriage immigrants.

Analysis of Residents' Satisfaction for the Pedestrian Space of Multi-family Housing (공동주택단지 보행공간의 주민만족도 분석)

  • This research analyzes the residents' satisfaction for the pedestrian space of multi-family housing based on quality index. For this purpose, nine apartment complexes which were built after 2000, are selected and examined by user characteristics of composition factors of pedestrian space. This research also compares residents' satisfaction by evaluation factors of walking environment. The resident survey reveals that the composit type of apartment gives the highest satisfaction to residents followed by a courtyard type, and a straight type the last. In particular, residents show high satisfaction to pedestrian-only space in the case of the composit type of apartment building. The most important factor of walking environment on residential satisfaction is the separation of car and pedestrian path of main entrance. Above all, suitability of construction laws and regulations should be reviewed for safer and more amenable walking environment.

  • Korean traditional house has inherented construction characteristics that contain human requirements with the adaptation to nature's order. As for traditional buildings, there are a lot of facilities like palaces, Buddhist temples, Confucianism architectures, government facilities, etc. Among them, housing construction is not only closely connected to our lives, but also plays an important role to connect our lives from the past to present. The master room in a traditional korean house is responsible for playing a center role of the residential life which implies the traditional values responsible for multi-functions and it is also the sphere of the living space. Therefore, this thesis considers the residential environmental adjustment method and the behaviors centered around the main buildings of Jeonnam Province. And also investigates the main reason for windows and doors formation. From this, we would like to further evaluate the master room life, and the inner space constructions following the spacial and organizational analysis of windows and doors. We would like to analyze the space organization methods, environmental adjustment methods and the usages of traditional buildings. Using the modern interpretation as basis, we would like to use the foundation materials to reflect single family housing plans.

  • Apartment housing is a widely-spread type in Korean housing market. Nevertheless, it has caused serious problems such as traditional community corruption, unsafe structure, defects and litigation from noise. Noise, especially in concrete structure for apartment housing, is hardly controlled in proper to prevent sound transmission between upper and lower families with existing system, In foreign countries, there are floating floor systems to enhance the noise control performance in multi-family housing. Therefore, this study aims to analyze subjective responses on sound characteristics in residential buildings. We analyzed the residential response and the quantities of measured data from environmental noise. The results of this study will be useful to provide guideline to make policy of environmental noise and criteria.

  • Vilhelm Wohlert is the Danish architect who designed Louisiana Museum of Modern Art near Copenhagen. Because of Louisiana Museum's popularity, Vilhelm Wohlert's name was started to be aware since 1990s. Although he is a well-known architect in Denmark, unfortunately his name is unknown in other countries. He designed various design projects from small scale furniture design to large scale museum and public projects. There are three programmatic categories in his architecture: exhibition programs including Louisiana Museum, residential program including private houses, and public programs including churches and schools. This thesis focuses on his residential design projects. Even though he designed a multi-family houses, Wohlert's house design consists of mainly one-off large private houses located in a nice natural environment. In chapter 3, the general history of his house projects was studied. Among them, the first exhibition house for Forum was explained more deeply to show Wohlert's early house design philosophy. In chapter 4, three built house projects were analyzed in detail. Analytical diagrams were used to show the key elements in the residential space. They are program composition, circulation, spatialization elements, final construction. His buildings have been compared with Alvar Aalto, Frank Lloyd Wright, and other Scandinavian architects. But there are some major differences that make Wohlert's design unique. In chapter 5, the case analysis results were summarized together to highlight the specific design characteristics found in Wohlert's residential design process. The universal spatial quality found in his residential projects can be applied in contemporary spatial designs.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the major factors of indoor environment that affect the satisfaction of the occupancy in multi-family residential buildings. The results of this study can contribute to improving the comfort of the residents effectively as they are applied preferentially at the design and construction stages. The indoor environment factors investigated for the analysis included thermal, light, air and the acoustic environment. The individual factors were derived from the 'indoor environment' assessment indices of the green building certificate systems of various countries. Based on these, a questionnaire was prepared to conduct the Post Occupancy Evaluation. The survey results were statistically analyzed.

  • Global warming caused by excessive greenhouse gas emission is causing climate change all over the world. In Korea, greenhouse gas emission from residential buildings accounts for about 10% of gross domestic emission. Also, the number of deteriorated multi-family housing complexes is increasing. Therefore, the goal of this research is to establish the bases to manage energy consumption continuously and methodically during MR&R period of multi-family housings. The research process and methodologies are as follows. First, research team collected the data on project characteristics and energy consumption of multi-family housing complexes in Seoul. Second, an ontology-based breakdown structure was established with some primary characteristics affecting the energy consumption, which were selected by statistical analysis. Finally, a predictive model of energy consumption was developed based on the ontology-based breakdown structure, with application of CBR, ANN, MRA and GA. In this research, PASW (Predictive Analytics SoftWare) Statistics 18, Microsoft EXCEL, Protege 4.1 were utilized for data analysis and prediction. In future research, the model will be more continuous and methodical by developing the web-base system. And it has facility manager of government or local government, or multi-family housing complex make a decision with definite references regarding moderate energy consumption.

  • As climate change is becoming the main issue, various efforts are focused on saving building energy consumption both at home and abroad. In particular, it is very important to save energy by maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of existing multi-family housing complex, because energy consumption in residential buildings is not only forming a great part of gross energy consumption in Korea but the number of deteriorated complexes is also sharply increasing. However, energy saving is not considered as a main factor in decision making on rehabilitation project. Also, any supporting tool is not appropriately prepared in existing process. As the first step for development of decision support system on rehabilitation, this paper developed a breakdown structure, which makes clusters of multi-family housing complexes. Decision tree, one of data mining methods, was used to make clusters based on the characteristics and energy consumption data of multi-family housing complexes. Energy saving and CO2 reduction will be maximized by considering energy consumption during rehabilitation process of multi-family housing complex, based on these results and following research.
