  • In this paper, we propose a multimodal biometric embedded system. It is designed to support face, iris, fingerprint and vascular pattern recognition. We use a S3C2440A based on ARM926T core processor that is made in Samsung. The system has support various external device interfaces for multi biometric sensors, and RFID/Smart Card reader/writer. Additionally, it has a 6" LCD panel and numeric keypad for easy GUI. The embedded system offers useful environments to develop better biometric algorithms for stand alone biometric system and accelerator hardware modules for real time operation.

  • The use of small hemispherical high-speed precision bearing has increased drastically these days in the field of computer disk driver, highteech devices as well as communication and electronic device drivers. It was suggested that the new polishing process adopting the diamond grinding wheel and polishing tool instead of multi stage lapping processes, which enables the mass production of the bearing by reduction of polishing time. Polishing mechanism was analysed and the results were applied to the design and manufacturing of the polishing system. Experiments for selection of optimal polishing conditions were carried out using the polishing system.

The Impact of Neighborhood Settings on Peer Risks among Delinquent Adolescents

  • The main purpose of this study was to identify the impact of neighborhood settings on peer risks experienced by delinquent adolescents. A convenience sample of 1,086 youth who came to the attention of four county juvenile courts was used for the present study. The peer risk levels were measured through use of version 1.0 of the Global Risk Assessment Device (GRAD); in addition, neighborhood information obtained from the National Census was utilized. The results of the HLM demonstrated that there were significant between-neighborhood variations in peer risks and the neighborhood economic disadvantage variable was associated with peer risks after controlling for the variables of individual characteristics. The findings of this study add to the literature on juvenile delinquency by providing empirical support for the proposed model that illustrates the significant relationship between a neighborhood setting indicator and peer risks experienced by delinquent adolescents when practicing treatment or intervention programs with delinquent adolescents.

  • Photoelectrochemical solar cells such as dye-sensitized cells (DSSCs), which exhibit high performance and are cost-effective, provide an alternative to conventional p-n junction photovoltaic devices. However, the efficiency of such cells plateaus at 11-12%, in contrast to their theoretical value of 33%. Improvements in efficiency can only occur through a fundamental understanding of the underlying physics, materials, and device designs of DSSCs. A photoelectrode consisting of semiconducting oxide nanoparticles and a transparent conducting oxide electrode (TCO) is a key component of DSSC and design of photoelectrode materials is one of promising strategies to improving energy conversion efficiency. We introduce monodisperesed $TiO_2$ nanoparticles prepared by forced hydrolysis method and their superiority as photoelectrode materials was characterized with aids of optical and electrochemical analysis. Multi-layered TCO materials are also introduced and their feasibility for use as photoelectrodes is discussed in terms of optical absorption and charge collecting properties.

ETS: Efficient Task Scheduler for Per-Core DVFS Enabled Multicore Processors

  • Recent multi-core processors for smart devices use per-core dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) that enables independent voltage and frequency control of cores. However, because the conventional task scheduler was originally designed for per-core DVFS disabled processors, it cannot effectively utilize the per-core DVFS and simply allocates tasks evenly across all cores to core utilization with the same CPU frequency. Hence, we propose a novel task scheduler to effectively utilize percore DVFS, which enables each core to have the appropriate frequency, thereby improving performance and decreasing energy consumption. The proposed scheduler classifies applications into two types, based on performance-sensitivity and allows a performance-sensitive application to have a dedicated core, which maximizes core utilization. The experimental evaluations with a real off-the-shelf smart device showed that the proposed task scheduler reduced 13.6% of CPU energy (up to 28.3%) and 3.4% of execution time (up to 24.5%) on average, as compared to the conventional task scheduler.

  • The high-intensity focused ultrasound device intermittently operates abnormally due to communication signal interference between the devices during use due to the high frequency radiated during the skin treatment procedure. Communication interference between multi-frequency ultrasound devices can be reduced through CAN communication controller and transceiver design, firmware S/W program and CAN communication module development.

  • With the popularization of smart phones and the development of the Internet, many people use smart phones to conduct identity verification procedures. smart phones are easier and faster to authenticate than personal desktop computers. However, as Internet hacking technology and malicious code distribution technology rapidly evolve and attack types become more diverse, authentication methods suitable for mobile environment are required. As authentication methods, there are methods such as possessive-based authentication, knowledge-based authentication, biometric-based authentication, pattern-based authentication, and multi-element authentication. In this paper, we propose a user authentication mechanism that uses collected information as authentication factor using smart phone. Using the proposed authentication mechanism, it is possible to use the smart phone information and environment information of the user as a hidden authentication factor, so that the authentication process can be performed without being exposed to others. We implemented the user authentication system using the proposed authentication mechanism and evaluated the effectiveness based on applicability, convenience, and security.

  • An elastomeric bushing is a device used in automotive suspension systems to cushion the force transmitted from the wheel to the frame of the vehicle. A bushing is an elastomeric hollow cylinder which is bonded to a solid metal shaft at its inner surface and a metal sleeve at its outer suface. The relation between the force applied to the shaft or sleeve and their relative deformation is nolinear and exhibits features of viscoelasticity. Numerical solutions of the boundary value problem represent the exact bushing response for use in the method for determining the force relaxation function of the bushing. The new nonlinear viscoelastic bushing model, which is called Pipkin-Rogers model, is proposed and it is shown that the predictions of the proposed force-displacement relation are in very good agreement with the exact results. This new bushing model is thus very suitable for use in multi-body dynamics codes. The success of the present study for axial mode response suggests that the same approach be applied to other modes, such as torsional or radial modes.

  • As the recent advancement of military equipment has been accelerated, it is becoming more important to act as an inspection device that verifies the performance of equipment in real time. Most of the inspection equipments were developed on the Windows OS based system. considering development convenience and development period. However, sice the data communication between these models occurs asynchronously, there is a problem that it is difficult to guarantee real-time performance of the window-based inspection equiment. To solve these problems, we use real-time commercial solutions to guarantee the real-time performance of Windows-based inspection equipment. In this paper, we propose a method of designing and implementing the inspection equipment software based on Real-Time implanted Kernel-Multi Processor (RTiK-MP) operating in Windows environment. In addition, real-time performance data accuracy was measured through a high-speed communication tool and interlocking test to verify the performance of the inspection device based on the real-time porting kernel.
