  • A joining of dissimilar metal combination faces significant problems such as poor strength and cracking associated with brittle intermetallic compounds(IMC) formed. An application of laser allows low heat input; leading to less dilution and smaller heat affected zone. The $CO_2$ laser overlay was conducted on an AC2B alloy with feeding Fe-based powders. The overlay area was significantly influenced from the travel velocity rather than the powder feeding rate. The interface between the overlay and substrate consisted of the hard and brittle IMC($FeAl_3,\;Fe_3Al,\;Fe_2Al_5$), which initiating and propagating the crack. The reciprocating test for the slide wear was conducted on a multi-pass overlay experiment. Comparing with the multi-pass overlay with no overlap, the overlay with 50% overlap showed better wear resistance.

  • A large number of structure in the world were build with poor seismic details, with or without any lateral load resisting system like concentrically braced frames and steel plate shear walls. These structures can reveal deteriorating hysteretic behaviors with stiffness and strength degradation. Therefore, seismic retrofitting of such structures for drift control has vital importance. In this study a retrofit methodology has been developed, which involves diagonal bracing of steel frames with different cable arrangements. In the experimental and numerical program 5 different lateral load resisting system were tested and results compared with each other. The results indicated that multi-cable arrangements suggested in this study showed stable ductile behavior without any sudden decrease in strength. Due to the usage of more than one diagonal cable, fracture of any cable did not significantly affect the overall strength and deformation capacity of the system. In cable braced systems damages concentrated in the boundary zones of the cables and beams. That is why boundary zone must have enough stiffness and strength to resist tension field action of cables.

  • Surge phenomena in multi-stage axial flow compressors were studied with attention to the frequency behaviors. A new parameter "volume-modified reduced surge frequency" was introduced, which took into consideration the essential surge process, i.e., emptying and filling of the working gas in the delivery plenum. The behaviors of the relative surge frequencies at the stall stagnation boundaries, compared with the corresponding duct resonance frequencies, have demonstrated the existence of two types of surges; i.e., a near-resonant surge and a subharmonic surge. The former, which has fundamentally a near-resonance frequency, occurs predominantly at the stall stagnation boundary for the short -and-fat plenum delivery flow-path and the long-and-narrow delivery duct flow-path, and possibly in the intermediate conditions. The latter, which has a subharmonic frequency of the fundamental near-resonant one and occurs mainly in the intermediate zone, is considered to be caused by the reduced frequency restricted to a limited range. In relation with those dimensionless frequencies at the stall stagnation boundary, the surge frequency behaviors in more general situations away from the boundaries could be estimated, though very roughly.

  • In modern industries, materials are required that possess multi-functional properties and at the same time flexibility in their shapes with structural stability. The major technology realizing this requirement consists of thinning metal wires and laying them with stable contact nodes. This research has dealt with a new method to manufacture thin wires by drawing without applying dies, but with introducing enforced necking, which enables to process multi-ends. Based on the new method, the process dynamics was modelled and its steady-state characteristics were analyzed. Results showed that the profiles of the material velocity in the drawing zone increased with a downward convex shape, while the cross-sectional area decreased with the shape of upward convex. The microwave heating turned out to be effective in wire drawing, but dependent on the input feeding direction. The variation in the diameters of the drawn wires was negatively affected by increasing the drawing ratio.

  • Manufactures of multi-crystalline silicon ingots by means of the directional solidification system (DSS) is important to the solar photovoltaic (PV) cell industry. The quality of the ingots, including the grain size and morphology, is highly related to the shape of the crystal-melt interface during the crystal growth process. We performed numerical simulations to analyze the thermo-fluid field and the shape of the crystal-melt interface both for steady conditions and transient processes. The steady simulations are first validated and then applied to improve the hot zone design in the furnace. The numerical results reveal that, an additional guiding plate weakens the strength of vortex and improves the desired profile of the crystal-melt interface. Based on the steady solutions at an early stage, detailed transient processes of crystal growth can be simulated. Accuracy of the results is supported by comparing the evolutions of crystal heights with the experimental measurements. The excellent agreements demonstrate the applicability of the present numerical methods in simulating a practical and complex system of directional solidification system.

  • Wire drawing process of the high carbon steel with a high speed is usually conducted at room temperature using a number of passes or reductions through consequently located dies. In multi-stage drawing process, temperature rise in each pass affects the mechanical properties of final product such as bend, twist and tensile strength. Also, this temperature rise during the deformation is the reason that the wire in drawing process is broken by the embrittlement due to rapid strain aging effect. This paper presents the estimation of the wire temperature for the multi-stage wire drawing process. Using the proposed calculation method of wire temperature, temperature rise at deformation zone as well as temperature drop in block considering the heat transfer between the block and wire were calculated. As these calculated wire temperatures were applied to the real industrial fields, it was known that the calculated results were in a good agreement with the measured wire temperature.

  • A simulation package has been developed as an event-driven system that can handle the hardware configuration of STC104 and algorithm proposed in the sister paper of ‘Study on High Speed Routers(II).’After various STC104 topology of meshes, torus, and hypercubes are constructed using up to 512 switches, the performance of each topology has been analyzed under different message generation rate in terms of throughputs, latency, and packet blocking time. Modified multicast algorithms for STC104 have been proposed for STC104 after U-mesh and U-torus in order to overcome the multicasting difficulty because of the point-to-point communication method found in STC104. The performance of the multicast algorithms have been analyzed over meshes and torus configuration. Throughput gets higher in the order of mesh, torus, and hypercube. Throughput difference among topology were distinctive in the zone of high message generation rate. Latency and blocking time increased in the order of hypercube, torus, and mesh. U-mesh and U-torus of software multicast showed similar throughput, however, U-mesh peformed slightly better result. These algorithms showed eight to ten times better results compared to individual message pass for 90 destination nodes. Multi-link environment also showed better performance than single-link environment because multi-link network used the extra links for communication.

  • API(American Petroleum Institute) steel, as a line pipe material, requires the enhanced mechanical and chemical properties with the environmental severity. Especially, the weld part(weld metal and heat affected zone) is an important region for the safety. However, the study for the behavior of microstructure and toughness in multi-pass welding is seldom. In this study, the relationship between the microstructure and toughness of welds with several welding, bending and heat-treatment conditions was examined. In particular, HIC property in the weld metal was evaluated. The microstructure and toughness in multi-passed HAZ seemed to be determined by the final welding thermal cycle and the low toughness was attributed to the MA constituents formed in the intercritically reheated region. The weld metal showed very low toughness and it was not improved by the change in bending and heat treatment conditions. Additionally, the cracks are observed in the weld metal. from these results, it was found that the choice of welding wire/flux is very important.

  • As an active emission display using emissive polymer has had much attention recently, needs for a selective patterning of emissive layer for those displays have been increased abruptly. Therefore, the various laser sources in terms of its wavelength has been used for laser direct patterning. In this work, the feasibility of those processes is examined using numerical analysis and the experimental investigation. A sample has multi-layered structure, emissive polymer on aluminum which is deposited on a glass substrate. Key factors for optimizing the laser patterning of the emissive polymer are considered into the control of ablation products, large-sized particle, and the choice of the appropriate wavelength for minimizing the heat affected zone and the remnant layer.

  • The time slot assignment problem (TSAP) or Satellite Communications scheduling problem (SCSP) for a satellite performs $n{\times}n$ ground station data traffic switching has been known NP-hard problem. This paper suggests $O(n^2)$ time complexity algorithm for TSAP of a satellite that performs $n^2{\times}n^2$ ground station data traffic switching. This problem is more difficult than $n{\times}n$ TSAP as NP-hard problem. Firstly, we compute the average traffic for n-transponder's basic coverage zone and applies ground station exchange method that swap the ground stations until all of the transponders have a average value as possible. Nextly, we transform the D matrix to $D_{LB}$ traffic matrix that sum of rows and columns all of transponders have LB. Finally, we select the maximum traffic of row and column in $D_{LB}$, then decide the duration of kth switch mode to minimum traffic from selected values. The proposed algorithm can be get the optimal solution for experimental data.
