Classification of Grid Connected Transformerless PV Inverters with a Focus on the Leakage Current Characteristics and Extension of Topology Families

  • Grid-connected transformerless photovoltaic (PV) inverters (TPVIs) are increasingly dominating the market due to their higher efficiency, lower cost, lighter weight, and reduced size when compared to their transformer based counterparts. However, due to the lack of galvanic isolation in the low voltage grid interconnections of these inverters, the PV systems become vulnerable to leakage currents flowing through the grounded star point of the distribution transformer, the earth, and the distributed parasitic capacitance of the PV modules. These leakage currents are prohibitive, since they constitute an issue for safety, reliability, protection coordination, electromagnetic compatibility, and module lifetime. This paper investigates a wide range of multi-kW range power rating TPVI topologies and classifies them in terms of their leakage current attributes. This systematic classification places most topologies under a small number of classes with basic leakage current attributes. Thus, understanding and evaluating these topologies becomes an easy task. In addition, based on these observations, new topologies with reduced leakage current characteristics are proposed in this paper. Furthermore, the important efficiency and cost determining characteristics of converters are studied to allow design engineers to include cost and efficiency as deciding factors in selecting a converter topology for PV applications.

  • This paper presents a new Leading edge modulation Buck converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) for the pulse voltage input. In the slave output of the LLC half-bridge multi-resonant converter, to regulate the direct chopper's output voltage, its PWM switch is controlled by the leading edge modulation. The principles of this proposed LEM control method and the fast dynamics in inductor current based on the converter impulse response are studied. The theoretical results are verified through an experimental prototype of the 100W 60inch PDP Address power module.

  • 최근에 생산되는 디지털 VLSI칩들은 그 집적도가 계속 높아지고 있으며, 이러한 칩들을 장착한 보드의 경우도 그 복잡성이 점차 높아지고 있다. 이에 따라 칩 및 보드에 대한 철저한 테스트 과정이 요구된다. 지금까지 보드 테스트 방법으로 널리 쓰였던 ICT(In-Circuit Test)는 칩의 고집적화에 따른 핀 간격의 조밀화와 SMT(Surface Mount Technology), BGA(Ball Grid Array), MCM(Multi Chip Module) 등의 새로운 패키징 방식의 등장에 따라 테스트 방법으로의 한계성을 드러내고 있다. 이에 대한 대안으로 등장한 IEEE Std 1149.1 은 ICT의 한계성을 극복할 수 있는 기술일 뿐 아니라 여러 가지 장점을 가지고 있으며 그 활용 분야도 다양하다. 본 논문에서는 IEEE Std 1149.1에 따라 설계된 보드 상에서 발생 가능한 고장들에 대한 고장 모델을 제시한다. 또한 각 고장 모델들의 양상과 진단 기법을 제시한다. 이를 통해 IEEE Std 1149.1에 따라 설계된 보드 상에서 발생한 고장들을 검출할 수 있으며, 고장의 종류 및 성격, 그리고 고장의 발생 위치 등의 정보를 얻을 수 있다. IEEE Std 1149.1에 따른 보드 설계가 보드의 신뢰성 보장에 긴요함을 인식하는 계기가 되기를 기대하며 제시된 고장 모델 및 진단 기법이 기술적으로 중요한 참고자료가 되기를 기대한다.

Rapid Electric Vehicle Charging System with Enhanced V2G Performance

  • This paper presents a simple and cost-effective stand-alone rapid battery charging system of 30kW for electric vehicles. The proposed system mainly consists of active front-end rectifier of neutral point clamped 3-level type and non-isolated bi-directional dc-dc converter of multi-phase interleaved half-bridge topology. The charging system is designed to operate for both lithium-polymer and lithium-ion batteries. The complete charging sequence is made up of three sub-interval operating modes; pre-charging mode, constant-current mode, and constant-voltage mode. Each mode is operated according to battery states: voltage, current and State of Charging (SOC). The proposed system is able to reach the full-charge state within less than 16min for the battery capacity of 8kWh by supplying the charging current of 67A. The optimal discharging algorithm for Vehicle to the Grid (V2G) operation has been adopted to maintain the discharging current of 1C. Owing to the simple and compact power conversion scheme, the proposed solution has superior module-friendly mechanical structure which is absolutely required to realize flexible power expansion capability in a very high-current rapid charging system. Experiment waveforms confirm the proposed functionality of the charging system.

  • Recently, with the advancement of internet network the system has been needed to be controllable and observable through internet at industrial workplace. In this study, we developed the digital timer which has a communication function to control and observe many kinds of devices by combining relay and timer used for each type of control panel to realize control solution based on internet to be easily applicable at workplace with low cost and adding 485 serial communication module to have parallel expansibility and safety. And, this system was experimented and designed for easy system management and status check from remote station through internet, appling the developed digital timer to parallel sequence control of motor. As the result of experiment, the circuit configuration would be more simplified than the existing, and it is expected that multi-connection control and monitoring can be simply implemented with low cost equipment at industrial workplace.

  • This paper documents the development of a fuzzy logic based incident detection model for urban diamond interchanges. Research in incident detection for intersections and arterials is at a very initial stage. Existing algorithms are still far from being robust in dealing with the difficulties related with data availability and the multi-dimensional nature of the incident detection problem. The purpose of this study is to develop a new real-time incident detection model for urban diamond interchanges. The development of the algorithm is based on fuzzy logic. The incident detection model developed through this research is capable of detecting lane¬blocking incidents when their effects are manifested by certain patterns of deterioration in traffic conditions and, thereby, adjustments in signal control strategies are required. The model overcomes the boundary condition problem inherent in conventional threshold-based concepts. The model captures system-wide incident effects utilizing multiple measures for more accurate and reliable detection, and serves as a component module of a real-time traffic adaptive diamond interchange control system. The model is designed to be readily scalable and expandable for larger systems of arterial streets. The prototype incident detection model was applied to an actual diamond interchange to investigate its performance. A simulation study was performed to evaluate the model's performance in terms of detection rate, false alarm rate, and mean time to detect. The model's performance was encouraging, and the fuzzy logic based approach to incident detection is promising.

  • In this contribution, we designed a general purpose input/output (GPIO) suitable for embedded systems, especially for Bluetooth baseband. Proposed architecture is compatible for the APB bus in AMBA bus architecture. General purpose I/O should be used as multi-functional and versatile interrupt sources. We considered the edge-sensitive mode as well as the level-sensitive mode for acquiring the interrupt sources. Also, we provided an option to select the operation polarity for flexible application to the embedded systems. The designed GPIO module was automatically synthesized, placed, and routed. Implementation was performed through the Altera FPGA and well operated at 25MHz clock frequency.

  • The photovoltaic ribbon attached the flux reduces the solar module manufacturing process and the pollution. This paper presents an analytical method for solving the continuous flux drying system of photovoltaic ribbon. Also, some experiments of the drying of photovoltaic ribbon are carried out in order to design the drying system. Numerical results indicate the air temperature, the air velocity, the air pressure and the timewise temperature variation of ribbon during drying process. In case of the drier process length is short, 400mm, the photovoltaic ribbon is wet. Thus, another study of drying system is necessary to improve the drying ability. As a result, multi-stage drier system is proposed and shown to be good drying ability.

Transient cooling operation of multistage thermoelectric cooler (TEC)

  • A thermoelectric cooler (TEC) is promising as an alternative refrigeration technology for the sake of its inherent advantages; no-moving parts and refrigerant-free in its operation. Due to the compactness, reliability and excellence in temperature stability, TECs have been widely used for small cooling devices. In recent years, thermoelectric devices have been attractive technologies that not only serve the needs of cooling and heating applications but also meet the demand for energy by recycling waste heat. In this research paper, multistage TEC is proposed as a concept of demonstrating the idea of transient cooling technology. The key idea of transient cooling is to harnesses the thermal mass installed at the interfacial level of the stages. By storing heat temporally at the thermal mass, the multistage TEC can readily reach lower temperatures than that by a steady-state operation. The multistage TEC consists of four different sizes of thermoelectric modules and they are operated with an optimized current. Once the cold-part of the uppermost stage is reached at the no-load temperature, the current is successively supplied to the lower stages with a certain time interval; 25, 50 and 75 seconds. The results show the temperatures that can be ultimately reached at the cold-side of the lowermost stage are 197, 182 and 237 K, respectively. It can be concluded that the timing or total amount of the current fed to each thermoelectric module is the key parameter to determine the no-load temperature.

  • MCM-ERC32 는 우주 환경에서 동작하는 시스템에 사용할 목적으로 유럽에서 개발된 집약 프로세서 모듈이다. MCM (Multi Chip Module)은 크게 ERC32 single chip 과 VASI (Very Advanced Sparc Interface) 및 6MByte 의 SRAM, 32MByte 의 DRAM 으로 구성되어 있다. VASI 의 경우 각종 I/O 처리 및 timer 의 기능을 수행하며 특히 VASI RTC 의 경우 VASI cycle, slot 을 이용하여 다양한 형태의 timer 구현이 가능하다. Timer 의 경우 각종 태스크의 관리와 스케줄링에 사용되는 가장 기본적이며 매우 중요한 요소이다. 위성의 고유 시간 역시 timer 를 활용하여 설계하게 되는데 이 부분이 잘 구현 되어야 정확한 임무 수행 및 위성의 제어가 가능하다. 본 논문에서는 VASI RTC 의 구조와 기능에 대해 설명하고 이를 위성의 고유 시간 운영에 적용하는 방법에 대해 다루도록 하겠다.
