Effect of Plasma Polymerization Coating of CNTs on the Tensile Strength of Pei/Cnt Composites

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which were purified by etching in 25% $H_2SO_4/HNO_3$ solution at $60^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, were modified via plasma polymerization coating of acrylic acid, allylamine or acetylene, and then utilized to prepare PEI/CNT composites. First, plasma polymerization conditions were optimized by measuring the solvent resistance of coatings in THF, chloroform and NMP, and the tensile strength of PEI/CNT (0.5%) composites as a function of plasma power (20~50 W) and monomer pressure (20~50 mTorr). The tensile strength of PEI/CNT composites was further evaluated as a function of CNT loading (0.2, 0.5 and 1%). Finally, FT-IR was utilized to provide a better understanding of the improved tensile properties of PEI/CNT composites via plasma polymerization coating of CNTs. Plasma polymerization of acrylic acid greatly enhanced the tensile strength of PEI/CNT composites, as did allylamine but to a lesser degree, while acetylene plasma polymerization coating decreased tensile strength.

Kinetic Analysis of Diffusion Aluminide Coating (확산 알루미나이드 코팅의 속도론적 해석)

  • A theoretical model which combines gaseous transport and solid state diffusion with the multi-component equilibrium at the gas/pack and gas/coating interfaces was used to study the kinetics of diffusion aluminide coating. The diffusion aluminide coatings were applied by pack cementation with Ni substrate under argon atmosphere in the high activity and the low activity pack containing $NH_4CL$ or $AlF_3$ activator. On the basis of the process conditions, the suggested model allows the surface composition, the growth rate of coating layers and the aluminium concentration profiles in coatings to be calculated. In the case of $NH_4$Cl activator, careful consideration was required in the analysis, because activator contains nitrogen and hydrogen as well as halogen element to activate the pack. A good agreement is obtained between the theoretical predictions and the experimental results.

  • This paper reviews the potentials of a rotary chemical vapor deposition (RCVD) process for nanomaterial synthesis and coating on powder-based materials. The rotary reactor offers a significant improvement over traditional CVD methods having horizontal and fixed reaction chambers. The RCVD system yields enhanced productivity and surface coating uniformity of nanoparticles applied in various purposes, such as efficient heat dissipation, surface hardness enhancement, and enhanced energy storage performances. The effectiveness of the RCVD system would open up new possibilities in various applications because uniform coating on powder-based materials with massive productivity is inevitable to develop multi-functional materials with high reliability.

Surface Properties of Re-Ir Coating Thin Film on Tungsten Carbide Surface (Tungsten Carbide 표면에 코팅된 Re-Ir 박막의 표면 특성)

  • Rhenium-Iridium(Re-Ir) thin films were deposited onto the tungsten carbide(WC) molding core by sputtering system. The Re-Ir films were prepared by multi-target sputtering with iridium, rhenium and chromium as the sources. Argon and nitrogen were inlet into the chamber to be the plasma and reactive gases. The Re-Ir thin films were prepared with targets having atomic percent of 3:7 and the Re-Ir thin films were formed with 240 nm thickness. The Re-Ir thin films on tungsten carbide molding core were analyzed by scanning electron microscope(SEM) and surface roughness. Also, adhesion strength and coefficient friction of Re-Ir thin film were examined. The Re-Ir coating technique has been intensive efforts in the field of coating process because the coating technique and process have been their feature, like hardness, high elasticity, abrasion resistance and mechanical stability and also have been applied widely the industrial and biomedical areas. In this report, tungsten carbide(WC) molding core was manufactures using high performance precision machining and the efforts of Re-Ir coating on the surface roughness.

Investigating coating material and conditions for rehabilitation of water transmission pipe using a robotic system (자동화 장비를 이용한 대형 상수관로 갱생을 위한 코팅재료 선정 및 방법에 관한 연구)

  • There is a growing concern on the improvement of water distribution pipeline for multi-regional water supply system in Korea along with its aging infrastructure. Rehabilitation of large diameter pipeline is more efficient in cost and time compared to replacement with trenching. The procedure for rehabilitation are diagnosis, cleaning, spraying coating material, and final inspection. The internal state of pipeline was carefully diagnosed and got C grade, which required rehabilitation. We found that 17,274,787,000 Korean won could be saved after pipe surface coating because of increased C coefficient of Hazen-Williams equation. Optimal coating material was D polyurea. We also found optimal distance between spraying nozzle and pipe wall to be 70 - 80 cm, which were critical factors for coating quality. This study also illustrated the time for spray drying to be more than 30 min. These results could be used in the quality control process during rehabilitation of aged pipelines.

Fabrication and Evaluation of Polyelectrolyte Complexes of Dextran Derivatives for Drug Coating of Coronary Stents

  • The aim of this study was to fabricate a dextran polyelectrolyte multi-layer on a bare metal stent (BMS) and to evaluate bio-physical properties of the layer. Diethylaminoethyl-dextran (DEAE-D) as a polycation and dextran sulfate (DS) as a polyanion were successively coated on the bare metal stent by a well-known layer-by-layer procedure. The morphology of the stent surface and its cell adhesion were studied after each coating step by scanning electron microscopy. The stent showed more blotched and slightly rougher morphology after dextran-DS coating. The contact angle of the DEAE-DS group ($39.5{\pm}0.15^{\circ}$) was significantly higher than that of the BMS group ($45.16{\pm}0.08^{\circ}$), indicating the improvement of hydrophilic. The SMC proliferation inhibition in the DEAE-DS-coated stent group ($20.9{\pm}0.04%$) was stronger than that in the control group ($21.7{\pm}0.10%$ in DS-coated group only). The DEAE-DS coating is desired for stent coating materials with biocompatibility and anti-restenosis effect.

Design of a Multi Dielectric Coating against Non-invaisive Attack (비침투형 공격에 강한 다중 유전체 코팅 설계)

  • In general, IC chip circuit which is operating a cryptographic computation tends to radiate stronger electromagnetic signal to the outside. By using a power detecter such as a loop antenna near cryptographic device, the encryption key can be identified by probing a electromagnetic signal. To implement a method against non-invasive type attack, multi dielectric slab structure on IC chip to suppress radiated electromagnetic signal was introduced. Multiple dielectric slab was implemented by suitably configured to have the Bragg reflection characteristics, and then the reflection response was computed and verified its effectiveness. As a result, the thickness of the dielectric coating was 2mm and the reflection response characteristics for the vertical incidence was achieved to be 91% level.

Effect of Al2O3-ZrO2 Composite Oxide Thickness on Electrical Properties of Etched Al Foil

  • To increase the capacitance of an Al electrolytic capacitor, the anodic oxide film, $Al_2O_3$, was partly replaced by an $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ (Al-Zr) composite film prepared by the vacuum infiltration method and anodization. The microstructure and composition of the prepared samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The coated and anodized samples showed multi-layer structures, which consisted of an inner Al hydrate layer, a middle Al-Zr composite layer, and an outer $Al_2O_3$ layer. The thickness of the coating layer could go up to 220 nm when the etched Al foil was coated 8 times. The electrical properties of the samples, such as specific capacitance, leakage current, and withstanding voltages, were also characterized after anodization at 100 V and 600 V. The capacitances of samples with $ZrO_2$ coating were 36.3% and 27.5% higher than those of samples without $ZrO_2$ coating when anodized at 100 V and 600 V, respectively.

  • Multi-nozzle spray painting procedure of the inorganic zinc shop primer was established in order to obtain uniform film thickness. The shop primer paint prevents the corrosion of steel block during shipbuilding. When the dry film thickness of shop primer is insufficient, rust will be generated on the steel block. Otherwise, thick coating of shop primer may be a problem of weld defect. So, it is important to obtain the uniform film thickness of shop primer. The uniformity of dry film thickness is affected by spray speed, distance from spray gun to target surface and overlapping span of spray path. In order to uniformly maintain coating thickness of shop primer, the coating procedure was established based on the correlation of shop primer spray variables.
