Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has been used as motor fuel due to its low emissions and low cost. The fuel feeding system has been improved with stringent requirement for exhaust emissions. LPG carburetion system was first introduced, then the system has been changed to a precisely controlled gas injection system, but this gas feeding system has a limitation on improving power output. In order to improve an engine performance, a multi-point port injection system was introduced recently, and a liquid direct injection system into a cylinder was suggested as a next generation system to maximize a fuel economy as well as a power. This study addresses the analysis of the LPG spray from diesel injectors. The spray images are visualized and compared with diesel sprays in a wide injection pressure range. The photographs show much wider dispersion of LPG sprays.
In this study, Development of 300,000kcal/hr high velocity Injection burner with fuel multi-stage was performed using experiments. The characteristics of NOx emission in multi fuel/air staged combustor have been experimentally studied. The design concept of multi fuel/air staged combustor is creation of two separate flame, a primary flame is largest access air combustion and the secondary flame is complete combustion zone, where most of fuel bums. Experiments were performed on an industrial scale in a laboratory furnace and Liquefied Natural Gas(LNG) was used as primary and secondary fuels. Comparison of outlet NOx and outlet Temperature under various air rate and primary/ secondary fuel ratio was performed. The test demonstrated that NOx emission con be reduced by 70% in accordance with operating conditions.

Supercavitating torpedo uses the supercavitation technology that can reduce dramatically the skin friction drag. The present work focuses on the numerical analysis of the non-condensable cavitating flow around the supercavitating torpedo. The governing equations are the Navier-Stokes equations based on the homogeneous mixture model. The cavitation model uses a new cavitation model which was developed by Merkle(2006). The multiphase flow solver uses an implicit preconditioning scheme in curvilinear coordinates. The ventilated cavitation is implemented by non-condensable gas injection on backward of cavitator cone and the base of the torpedo. The comparison between the without and with ventilated cavitation numerical results, with ventilated cavitation using non-condensable gas injection is more efficient method.
This basic study is required to examine spray or jet behavior depending on fuel phase. In this study, analyses of diesel fuel(n-Tridecane, $C_{13}H_{28}$) spray and natural gas fuel(Methane, $CH_4$) jet under high temperature and pressure are performed by a general-purpose program, ANSYS CFX release 11.0, and the results of these are compared with experimental results of diesel fuel spray using the exciplex fluorescence method. The simulation results of diesel spray is analyzed by using the combination of Large-Eddy Simulation(LES) and Lagrangian Particle Tracking(LPT) and of a natural gas jet is analyzed by using Multi-Component Model(MCM). There are two study variables considered, that is, ambient pressure and injection pressure. In a macroscopic analysis, the higher ambient pressure is, the shorter spray or jet tip penetration is at each time after start of injection. And the higher injection pressure is, the longer spray or jet tip penetration is at each time after start of injection. When liquid fuel is injected, droplets of the fuel need some time to evaporate. However, when natural gas fuel is injected, the fuel does not need time to evaporate. Gas fuel consists of minute particles. Therefore, the gas fuel is mixed with the ambient gas more quickly at the initial time of injection than the liquid fuel is done. The experimental results also validate the usefulness of this analysis.
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is used in spark ignition (SI) engines. Fuel injection rate of an injector is affected by fuel temperature and pressure in LPG liquid injection systems for either a multi-point-injection (MPI) or a direct injection (DI) engine. Even fuel injection conditions are varied, the air-fuel ratio should be accurately controlled to reduce exhaust emissions. In this study, a correction factor fur the fuel injection rate of an injector is derived from density ratio and pressure difference ratio. A compensation method of injected fuel amount is proposed for a fuel injection control system. The experimental results for the LPG liquid injection system in a SI engine show that this system works well fur a full range of engine speed and load condition, and the air-fuel ratio is accurately controlled by the proposed correction factor.
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is regarded as an alternative fuel for spark ignition engine due to similar or even higher octane number. In addition, LPG has better fuel characteristics including high vaporization characteristic and low carbon/hydrogen ratio leading to a reduction in carbon dioxide emission. Recently, development of LPG direct injection system started to improve performance of vehicles fuelled with LPG. However, spray characteristics of LPG were not well understood, which is should be known to develop injector for LPG direct injection engines. In this study, effects of operation condition including ambient pressure, temperature, and injection pressure on spray properties of n-butane were evaluated and compared to gasoline in a multi-hole injector. As general characteristics of both fuels, spray penetration becomes smaller with an increase of ambient pressure as well as a reduction in the injection pressure. However, it is found that evaporation of n-butane was faster compared to gasoline under all experimental condition. As a result, spray penetration of n-butane was shorter than that of gasoline. This result was due to higher vapor pressure and lower boiling point of n-butane. On the other hand, spray angle of both fuels do not vary much except under high ambient temperature conditions. Furthermore, spray shape of n-butane spray becomes completely different from that of gasoline at high ambient temperature conditions due to flash boiling of n-butane.
The high-pressure die-casting is one of the most effective methods to produce a large amount of products in short cycle time. This process, however, has a problem that the gas porosity defect appears easily. The generation of gas porosity is known mainly due to the air entrapment during the injection stage. Most of numerical simulations for the molten metal flow pattern observations have done in the treating of one phase fluid flow but the gas-liquid interface is essentially multi- phase phenomenon. In this paper, the two-phase fluid flow numerical simulation methods have been adapted to predict the gas porosity generations in the molten metal. The accuracy and the usefulness of the new simulation module have been emphasized and verified through some comparison experiments.
This study was carried out to investigate the injection characteristics of 800 kPa compressed natural gas compressed natural gas (CNG) injector developed in Korea. The CNG injector with multi-holes, employed in this experiment, was designed to inject CNG in the manifold at high pressure of 800 kPa. The spray macroscopic visualization test was carried out via Schlieren photography to study fuel-air mixing process. The fundamental spray characteristics, such as spray penetration, spray cone angle and spray velocity, were evaluated in the constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC) with varying the constant back pressure in CVCC from 0 to 1.8 bar. For the safety reason, nitrogen ($N_2$) and an acetone tracer were utilized as a surrogate gas fuel instead of CNG. The surrogate gas fuel pressures were controlled at 3, 5.5, and 8 bar, respectively. Injection durations were set at 5 ms throughout the experiment. The simulating events of the low engine speed were arranged at 1,000 rpm. The spray images were recorded by using a high-speed camera with a frame rate of 10,000 f/s at $512{\times}256pixels$. The spray characteristics were analyzed by using the image processing (Matlab). The results showed the significant difference that higher injection pressure had more effect on the spray shape than the lower injection pressure. When the injection pressure was increased, the longer spray penetration occurred. Moreover, the linear relation between speed and time are dependent on the injection pressure as well.
