  • Authors experienced a case of intermediate grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma in 29-year-old female. The origin of this tumor might be mucus secreting cells of palatal mucous gland. The characteristic features were as follows: 1. In clinical examination, exopytic mass was observed in left hard palate and similar to pleomorphic adenoma. 2. In radiographic findings, destructive changes of left hard palate, nasal septum, nasal inferior turbinate and floor of maxillary sinus and soft tissue mass were observed. 3. Histopathologically, mucus-secreting cells, epidermoid cells and intermediate cells were observed and diagnosed as intermediate grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

  • The skin of the Korean bullheads, Pseudobagrus brevicorpus and P. koreanus, is composed of epidermis, dermis and subcutis. The epidermis has three layers, the outermost layer, middle layer and stratum germinativum. The epidermis consists of two types of gland cells, an unicellular mucous cell of sulfomucin and a large club cell having sometimes two nuclei. The epidermis has numerous intraepithelial blood vessels in P. brevicorpus but not at all in P. koreanus. Lymphatic spaces containing lymphocytes are well developed in mainly the stratum germinativum. The dermis lacks scales and consists mostly of bundles of coarse collagen fibers. The collagen bundles are arranged in parallel to each other in the dorsum and lateral region toward the dorsum, but vertically at intervals in the abdomen and lateral region toward the abdomen. Considering this unique skin structure, the two species are likely to exercise cutaneous respiration as a dual respiratory system to overcome hypoxic conditions which frequently occurs in their habitats.

  • Mucoepidermoid carcinoma occurs more freguently than any other in the major sacivary glands. It is relatively more common in parotid than in submandibular gland. Stewart at al published the first large series of these tumors in 1945 and suggested the name "Mocoepidermoid tumor". Now it is divided three categories : low-grade, intermediate-grade, high-grade. And Mucoepidermoid carcinomas are composed of mucous cells, epidermoid cells, and intermediate cells. We freated low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma patient with induction chemotherapy, surpery, and adjuvomt chemotherapy.

  • Bronchogenic cysts are uncommon congenital anomalies and commonly located in the mediastinum or lung parenchyma. Bronchogenic cyst in cervical area is rare and in posterior pharyngeal area is exteremely rare. Clinically, it is usually asymptomatic and incidentally diagnosed. It is pathologically confirmed only when there are bronchial tissues such as pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium, smooth muscle cells, mucous gland and/or cartilage. Since it has potential for malignant transformation and complication, complete excision is essential. We report a case of bronchogenic cyst located in the retropharyngeal space with a review of literature.

  • Cryptocercus nymphs periodically groom ventral surface of their parents. The grooming might be licking-behavior to obtain secretions from the ventral surface of their parents, and some essential nutrients or hormones that facilitate nymphal development might be included in the secretions. We tried to find morphological structures for secretion outlets on the ventral surface. The deep depressions around setae were present, and their shape was an external morphological structure that liquid secretions from internal glands are likely to be well seized. There were also small holes on the depressions that might be external openings for secretions from the sternal glands. Another possible region on body surface for outlets of secretions might be the apophyses. In Cryptocercus individuals, mucous liquid on body surface was relatively highly present around coxa. The intercoxal apodemes, to which muscles are attached and which open externally between the mid and hindcoxae, might have evolved a secondary function of producing nourishment for the young.

  • It was planned to investigate, in mice that received ACTH, the influence of Panax Ginseng upon DNA synthesis of submandibular gland by observing incorporation of $[^3H]$ thymidine into the tissue cells. Thirty male mice $(body\;weight:\;18{\sim}20\;g)$ were divided equally into the ginseng-ACTIH and the saline-ACTH groups. Each animal of the ginseng-ACTH and the saline-ACTH groups received every day (subcutaneously) 0.05 m1/10 g body weight of ginseng extract(4 mg of ginseng alcohol extract in 1 ml of saline) and the same amount of saline, respectively, for 5 days. On the 5th experimental day, all animals received 0.01 unit of ACTH intraperitoneally one hour after the last medication, and $1\;{\mu}Ci/g$ body weight of $[^3H]$ thymidine after one more hour. Five animals, at a time, of each group were sacrificed 1, 10, and 24 hr after $[^3H]$ thymidine administration, and the radioactivity of cells in their mandibular gland was measured autoradiographically in terms of the % number of radioactive cells in 1,000 cell counts (Radioactive Index, R.1.). Results obtained were as follows: 1. The radioactive indices obtained from submandibular gland of the saline-ACTH group 1, 10 and 24 hr after $[^3H]$ thymidine administration were $15.2{\pm}0.32,\;20.1{\pm}0.30,\;and\;24.5{\pm}0.52(mean{\pm}S.D.)$ in the mucous cells, $13.0{\pm}0.22,\;10.2{\pm}0.05,\;and\;7.5{\pm}0.42$ in the serous cells. and $10.5{\pm}0.40,\;13.6{\pm}0.32,\;and\;15.9{\pm}0.42$ in the duct cells, while the $mean{\pm}S.D.$ of the values obtained from the 3 cell types 1, 10 and 24 hr after $[^3H]$ thymidine were $10.9{\pm}0.28,\;12.4{\pm}0.31,\;and\;10.0{\pm}0.39.$ Thus the radioactive indices obtained from the ginseng-ACTH group were generally lower than those obtained from the saline-ACTH group. It is inferred from the above results that the ginseng tends to promote the suppressive action of ACTH upon DNA synthesis of cells in the mandibular gland.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of tributyltin (TBT) on histopathological and ultrastructural changes in the digestive gland structure of the equilateral venus, Gomphina veneriformis. Experimental period was 36 weeks. Experimental groups consist of control condition and 3 TBTCl exposure conditions (0.4, 0.6, $0.8\;TBTC\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$). Outer envelop of the visceral mass of G. veneriformis exposed to TBTCl was observed disappearance of microvilli and cilia, decrease of mucous cell and partially destruction of epithelium. In the digestive gland showed an increase of number of hemocyte and mucopolysaccaride near the digestive tubule at early time of the exposure. Especially, in $0.8\;TBTC\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ group, collapse of digestive tubule with modification of epithelium was observed. TEM observation revealed the numerous glycogen granules in epithelium of the outer envelop and connective tissue. In the ciliated cell of the primary duct formed the cilia in cytoplasm. Basophilic cell was observed destruction of the rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria. Also, nucleus in the epithelium of the digestive tubule was disappeared heterochromatin and nucleolus, and condense. As the concentration of TBTCl increased, the accumulation of lipofucin increased in the digestive gland, but the collapse of digestive tubule induced a decrease of accumulation of lipofuscin.

  • Integumentary structures of the stone flounder, Karefus bicoloratus were examined by means of the light and transmission electron microscopy. Stratified epidermal layer consists of supporting cells, unicellular glands and granular cells. The epidermal layer could be classified into superficial, intermediated and basal layer by morphology and structure of the supporting cells . The cytoplasm of supporting cells is divided into cortex and medullar part. In the cortex microfilaments are well developed. Mucous cells of unicellular gland were observed in the superficial and intermediated layer of the epidermis. The mucous materials were identified as glycoprotein of neutral and carboxylated mucosubstance by histochemical methods. Club cell has well developed smooth endoplasmic reticula and Golgi complex in the cytoplasm. Granular cells were observed in the intermediated and basal layer, and the cytoplasm is occupied with membrane-bounded granules of electron dense. Three types of pigment cells could be distinguished with electron density of cytoplasmic inclusions. Nerve myelins were observed near the pigment cells.

  • This study was conducted to find out survival rate, activity, growth and change of the organ structure of bivalves exposed to heavy metal. The results of the study confirmed that zinc (Zn) induces reduction of survival rate and activity, abnormality of organ structure of the equilateral venus, Gomphina veneriformis. Experimental groups were composed of one control condition and three Zn exposure conditions ($0.64mg\;Zn{\iota}^{1},\;1.07mg\;Zn{\iota}^{-1},\;1.79mg\;Zn{\iota}^{-1}$). As the concentration of zinc increased the accumulation of lipofucin increased in the digestive gland. Survival rate was the lowest in the lowest Zn exposure group at $0.64mg;Zn{\iota}^{-1}$. Growth was not significantly different between the control and exposure group. Activity. with the exception of the lowest Zn exposure group at $0.64mg\;Zn{\iota}^{-1}$, was similar between the control and exposure group. Histological analysis of organ system illustrated expansion of hemolymph sinus, loss of striated border of inner epidermis, increase in the number of mucous cell in the mantle. Also, histological degenerations as epithelial necrosis and hyperplasia of mucous cells are recognized in the gill and foot.

  • The structure of integumentary epidermis is studied in the bastard halibut, Paralichthys olivaceus based on the light and transmission electron microscope. Epidermal layer consists of supporting cells, unicellular glands and accessory cells. The supporting cells were classified into superficial cell, intermediated cell and basal cell. Superficial cell of epidermal layer is squamous or cuboidal and the surface is covered with numerous microridges. The supporting cells are connected to another cell with membrane interdigitations and desmosmes. And tonofilaments are developed in the cortical cytoplasm. Gland cells are classified into mucous cell and club cell. By the histochemical studies of the epidermal secretions the mucous materials are identified as neutral polysaccharides. Club cell has numerous vacuoles and microfilaments in the cytoplasm. Also chloride cells are observed in the epidermis, it cytoplasm is occupied numerous mitochondria.
