Flora of Mt. Seorak, Gangwon-do (강원도 설악산의 식물상)

  • The vascular flora of Mt. Seorak had been researched from 1984 to 2010, and this research revealed 994 taxa in total, including 814 species, 1 subspecies, 122 varieties and 57 forms in 463 genera, 109 families. Among them were 53 taxa of Korean endemic species, 60 taxa of rare and endangered species, and 248 taxa of specially designated species in view of floristics by the Ministry of Environment, which includes 42 taxa of grade V, 27 taxa of grade IV, 58 taxa of grade III, 57 taxa of grade II, and 64 taxa of grade I. With regard to the naturalized plants, 60 taxa were recognized, and Compositae taxa was distributed in highest ratio, accounting for 31.7%, and naturalization ratio was found to be 6.0%. Furthermore, hemicryptophytes (27.6%), geophytes (25.0%) and phanerophytes (21.8%) showed high proportional ratio in life form spectrum.

Analysis on the Community Structure of Quercus mongolica Fisch. ex Ledeb. in the Baekdudaegan Mountains by Elevation - Between Hyangnobong and Gitdaebaggybong - (해발고도에 따른 백두대간 신갈나무군락 특성 연구 - 향로봉에서 깃대배기봉 구간을 대상으로 -)

  • This study is contributed to examine the vegetation characteristics of the Quercus mongolica which are located in between two summits, hyangnobong and gitdaebaggybong, with dividing two regions(I, II). A total of 63 Quercus mongolica communities were enrolled in this survey. A~E, 5 communities were the result of analysed classification by TWINSPAN. Spatial distribution of the communities; 'A' community is concentrated at an altitude of about 1,300 meters in Mt. Taebaek(II region). 'B' and 'C' communities are concentrated at an altitude of between 700 and 1500 meters in Mt. Seorak and Odae(Iregion). 'D' and 'E' communities are concentrated at an altitude of below 1,100 meters in Mt. Cheongok and geumdaebong(II region), and also Mt. Seorak and Odae(Iregion). Arboral and shrub populations, maximum species diversity and height of arboral of each communities have a characteristic of decreasing according to increasing altitude gradually. And the result of studying on arboreal growth increment with up to 40-year-old trees, there is no special tendency with growth increment in the altitude of subnormal 1,100 meters, but there is a tendency that growth increment becomes lower in the altitude of more than 1,100 meters. In correlation analysis, it is -0.53 in the Quercus mongolica and Betula costata community at an altitude of over 1,000 meters, the correlation shows negative(-). It is +0.59 in the Quercus mongolica and Rubus crataegifolius community at an altitude of less than 1,000 meters, the correlation shows positive(+). And those are cognate trees with the correlation of Betula costata, Betula costata Trautv., Tripterygium regelii Sprague&Takeda., Acer barbinerve Maxim. With a summary of the results, the changes in the environment according to the elevation affect Quercus mongolica community.

Vegetation Structure of Abies nephrolepis Forest in Mt. Doota and Mt. Cheongok, Gangwon-do, Korea (강원도 두타산과 청옥산 일대 분비나무림의 식생 구조 분석)

  • This study was conducted to identify the vegetation structure of the Abies nephrolepis forests by analyzing species composition in Mt. Doota and Mt. Cheongok in the Gangwon region with the phytosociological method. In order to perform a field investigation, 18 survey areas with an area of about 400 m2 were set up for the stands where A. nephrolepis grow wild. Communities were classified through TWINSPAN and visualized using DCA (Detrended Correspondence Analysis). Species diversity analysis, importance value analysis, and DBH class analysis were employed to identify the characteristics of each community. As a result, the A. nephrolepis forests in Mt. Doota and Mt. Cheongok have been classified into 4 communities; GroupI, II, III and IV. GroupIis Quercus mongolica-A. nephrolepis competitive forest dominated by Q. mongolica and A. nephrolepis in the order. Group II is A. nephrolepis-Betula ermanii competitive forest dominated by A. nephrolepis, Sorbus commixta, and B. ermanii in the order. Group III is dominated by A. nephrolepis, but is expected to have competition between A. nephrolepis and Q. mongolica in the future due to the mass occurrence of Q. mongolica saplings. A. nephrolepis, S. commixta, and Q. mongolica are the dominant species in Group IV, and A. nephrolepis is the major dominant species in all layers. The species diversity of the A. nephrolepis forests in Mt. Doota and Mt. Cheongok is lower than other A. nephrolepis forests in Mt. Seorak, Maruguem, and Mt. Odae. It is necessary to establish conservation measures and to continuously monitor the A. nephrolepis forests in Mt. Doota and Mt. Cheongokis due to the harsh environment and the competition that may occur between A. nephrolepis and deciduous trees such as Q. mongolica in the future.

  • Five unrecorded species (Oedipodium griffithianum, Myurella tenerrima, Trachypus bicolor, Coscinodon humilis, Meteorium miquelianum subsp. atrovariegatum) with one unrecorded family and two unrecorded genera, were reported as new to the Korean moss flora. The monotypic family Oedipodiaceae consisting of a single genus and single species was distinguished from Splachnaceae by small plants that were 10 mm in length simple or sometimes branched, obovate-spathulate to ${\pm}$ orbicular, costa ending below the apex and entire margins except for the lower long-ciliate portion The species was first found at the top of the Mt. Seorak at an altitude of 1708 m. The two genera, Myurella and Coscinodon were found in the Korean Peninsula. Myurella tenerrima (Theliaceae) was found around the top of Jung-bong on Mt. Jiri. It was mixed with other mosses in the crevices of rocks in the alpine regions. The species is similar to M. sibirica, yet it can be distinguished by the position of papilla in the median laminal cells. Coscinodon humilis (Grimmiaceae) were found on the ridge of Mt. Gaya. C. humilis has a variety of hyaline apex according to leaf position and forms a capsule so it can be distinguished by family. Trachypus bicolor and Meteorium miquelianum subsp. atrovariegatum are unrecorded species. T. bicolor (Trachypodaceae) were found on the ridge of Mt. Gaya. T. bicolor is similar to T. humilis but distinguished by the costal lengths of the leaves. M. miquelianum subsp. atrovariegatum (Meteoriaceae) was found in Gageo-do. This species was distinguished by the plant form and morphology of stem leaves in the same genus.

The Relationship between Tree-Ring Growth in Pinus densiflora S. et Z. and the Corresponding Climatic Factors in Korea

  • To analyze the relationship between climatic factors (mean monthly temperature and total precipitation) and tree-ring growths of Pinus densiflora S. et Z. from National Parks (according to region) of the Korea, 20 trees were sampled from 13 National Parks. Only trees that were successfully cross-dated were used for dendrochronological analysis, and at least 11 trees were included. The tree-ring chronology of Mt. Bukhan (covering the shortest period of 1917 - 2016 [100 years]) was assessed, as well as that of Mt. Seorak (covering the longest period of 1687 - 2017 [331 years]). After cross-dating, each ring width series was double-standardized by first fitting a logarithmic curve and then a 50-year cubic spline. The relationships between climate and tree-ring growth were calculated with response function analysis. The results show a significant positive correlation between a given year's February-March temperature, May precipitation levels, and tree-ring growth. It indicates that a higher temperature in early spring and precipitation before cambium activity are important for radial growths of Pinus densiflora in the Korea.

  • Leontopodium seorakensis (Asteraceae), a new species from Mt. Seorak National Park in central Korea is described and illustrated. Its taxonomic history, distribution, habitats, and diagnostic characteristics are discussed and contrasted with those of the closely related L. japonicum Miquel and L. leiolepis Nakai.

  • This study was to analyze vegetation and soil characteristic, and ordination of Bupleurum euphorbioides community located in Mt. Seorak area, Mt. Sobaek area, and Mt. South Deogyu area. Bupleurum euphorbioides community was classified into Carex lanceolata subcommunity and Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. alpinum subcommunity, and Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. alpinum subcommunity was classified into Calamagrostis arundinacea and Carex breviculmis group. In the study sites, soil organic matter, nitrogen, available phosphorous, changeable potassium, changeable calcium, changeable magnesium concentration, cation exchange capacity, and soil pH were ranged from 9.0~15.2%, 0.32~0.47%, 3.0~8.6ppm, 0.3~0.9me/100g, 0.5~1.5me/100g, 0.2~0.6me/100g, 11.4~16.1me/100g, and 4.3~4.6, respectively. And, soil texture was sandy loam or loam. The Carex breviculmis group of Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. alpinum subcommunity was found in area of high elevation and had high exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg concentration. The Calamagrostis arundinacea group of Chrysanthemum zawadskii var.alpinum subcommunity was found in area of low elevation and had lower exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg concentration than in the other subcommunity. The Carex lanceolata subcommunity was found in area of medium elevation and had medium exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg concentration. The Carex lanceolata subcommunity was located in a path of top the mountain peak, and has been destroyed. We need any action to protect the subcommunity.

Mating System in Natural Population of Pinus koraiensis at Mt. Seorak Based on Allozyme and cpSSR Markers (동위효소 표지와 cpSSR 표지를 이용한 설악산 잣나무 집단의 교배양식)

  • Mating system parameters were estimated in a natural population of Pinus koraiensis which was located at Gwongeumseong in Mt. Seorak, South Korea. The estimated parameters from allozyme were as follows: 0.882 of multilocus outcrossing rates($t_m$), 0.881 of singlelocus outcrossing rates($t_s$), 0.368 of correlated paternity($r_p$), and 2.7 of number of effective pollen contributors. The estimated parameters from cpSSR markers were as follows: 0.831 of average of outcrossing rates and 12.4 of the average number of effective pollen contributors. The average outcrossing rate from two genetic markers was 0.857, which was similar to those estimated in other conifer species. More number of potential pollen contributors was estimated from cpSSR marker analysis compared with that estimated from allozyme marker analysis. This result sugges$t_s$ that cpSSR markers may be more useful than allozyme markers for identifying potential pollen contributors in the analysis of mating system.

Genetic Diversity and Spatial Genetic Structure of Dwarf Stone Pine in Daecheongbong Area, Mt. Seorak (설악산 대청봉 눈잣나무(Pinus pumila (Pall.) Regel) 집단의 유전다양성과 공간적 유전구조)

  • Pinus pumila, which occurs in the northeast Asia, is found limitedly in Daecheongbong area of Mt. Seorak in the South Korea. This population was chosen to study spatial pattern, genetic diversity and spatial genetic structure. There were 48 polymorphic and 30 monomorphic I-SSR markers. A total of 65 individuals which distributed in the study site (40 m ${\times}$ 70 m) showed weakly aggregate distribution (Aggregate Index = 0.871). A total of 40 genets were observed from 65 individuals through I-SSR genotype comparison. Proportion of distinguishable genotype (G/N), genotype diversity (D) and genotype evenness (E) were 61.5%, 0.977 and 0.909, respectively. In spite of the small number and the limited distribution, Shannon's diversity index (I = 0.567) was relatively high as compared with those of other plant species. Spatial autocorrelation using Tanimoto's distance showed that the genetic patch was established within 12 m. Based on Mantel tests, there was relatively low correlation between genetic distance and geographic distance. Therefore, it seems the P. pumila population was formed by many parent trees in early stage. For ex situ genetic conservation of P. pumila, the sampling strategy is efficient at least above 12 m between individual trees.

Development of a habitat suitability index for the habitat restoration of Pedicularis hallaisanensis Hurusawa

  • Background: We developed a habitat suitability index (HSI) model for Pedicularis hallaisanensis, a Grade II Endangered Species in South Korea. To determine the habitat variables, we conducted a literature review on P. hallaisanensis with a specific focus on the associated spatial factors, climate, topography, threats, and soil factors to derive five environmental factors that influence P. hallaisanensis habitats. The specific variables were defined based on the collected data and consultations with experts in the field, with the validity of each variable tested through field studies. Results: Mt. Seorak had a suitable habitat area of 2.48 km2 for sites with a score of 1 (0.62% of total area) and 0.01 km2 for sites with a score of 0.9. Mt. Bangtae had a suitable habitat area of 0.03 km2 for sites with a score of 1 (0.02% of total area) and 0 km2 for sites with a score of 0.9. Mt. Gaya showed 0.13 km2 of suitable habitat for sites with a score of 1 (0.17% of total area) and 0 km2 for sites with a score of 0.9. Lastly, Mt. Halla showed 3.12 km2 of suitable habitat related to sites with a score of 1 (2.04% of total area) and 4.08 km2 of sites with a score of 0.9 (2.66% of total area). Mt. Halla accounts for 73.1% of the total core habitat area. Considering the climatic, soil, and forest conditions together with standardized collection sites, our results indicate that Mt. Halla should be viewed as a core habitat of P. hallaisanensis. Conclusions: The findings in this study provide useful data for the identification of core habitat areas and potential alternative habitats to prevent the extinction of the endangered species, P. hallaisanensis. Furthermore, the developed HSI model allows for the prediction of suitable habitats based on the ecological niche of a given species to identify its unique distribution and causal factors.
