  • Cooling systems for electronic equipments are becoming more important. Cooling technologies using natural and forced convection are limited and operated in very low efficiency. A corona discharge is utilized as the driving mechanism for anair pump, which allows for airflow generation with low noise and no moving parts. However they do not enhance the flow rate and overcome the control mechanism of the pump. In this study a point-mesh type air pump, with a third electro de installed near the corona point, has been proposed and investigated by focusing on elevating the ionic wind velocity and power yield. As a result, the significantly enhanced ionic wind velocity and tremendously increased power yield can be obtained with the proposed air pump system.

  • The process of solidification of metal is accompanied by liquid-solid change and known as Stefan's heat conduction problem on the moving boundary. In this study the temperature distribution in ingot and metallic mould during casting was analyzed by the two dimensional heat conduction theory. The transient temperature distribution was numerically calculated using a finite element method on the nodal point of mesh screen representing ingot and mould cross section. The theory was applied on the casting of aluminum(purity ; 99%) in flat ingot mould of GC25. The analysis will make it possible to calculate an optimum mould shape of which temperature gradient becomes minimum.

  • In this paper, we developed a Zigbee module based on CC2520 which is possible to construct the mesh network and also support to Zigbee Pro standard as a preceding research of autonomous moving of mobile robot using Zigbee. After manufacturing the Zigbee module, we selected antenna to fit Zigbee wireless frequency band using network analyze as means performance improvement. We also carry out an impedance matching of Zigbee module, extend the possible distance of two-way wireless communication and ensure the safety of communication.

  • The cross-flow fan performance and its sound noise characteristics are predicted by computational methods. The unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in moving coordinates are solved by a SMAC method on unstructured triangular meshes, using a sliding mesh technique at the interface between the domain rotating with blades and the rest stationary part. The computationally predicted fan performance was favorably compared with experiment, and some numerical aspects of simulating the cross-flow fan are discussed. With the computed unsteady flow field, aeroacoustic sound noise of the fan is predicted by the Lighthill-Curie equation. The unsteady surface pressure fluctuations on stabilizer enables a prediction of BPF noise of the uniform pitch blade fan quite accurately. The aeroacoustic sound noise characteristics of both uniform and random pitch blade fans are also examined by SPL spectrum analysis.

  • The pressure-transient on platform screen doors in side platforms caused by passing trains with various operating conditions have been investigated numerically. The transient compressible three-dimensional flow simulations are performed with actual operating conditions of two trains by adopting moving mesh technique. To achieve more realistic results, the detailed shape of train and the subway station including tunnels connecting the adjacent stations are represented in the computational domain. Numerical analyses are carried out for cases considering arriving/passing/departing train with or without train stopped on the opposite track, and both trains on the move in opposite direction. From the numerical results, the maximum pressure on the platform screen doors, which is predicted in the case of two passing trains, satisfied the design standards for similar stations.

  • The flow analysis is needed to verify the physical phenomena through interruption processes for improving the capacity and the reliability of gas circuit breakers. Moreover the small current interruption performance of GCBs could be predicted by coupling the flow characteristics with the electric field one. In this paper, the unsteady flow characteristics and the traveling trajectory are depicted with a commercial CFD code, PHOENICS, programmed for moving motion of objects. In order to validate computational results, the measured pressure data in cylinder and in front of arcing contact are compared with the test results of small current interruption.

  • In the present study, a numerical simulation of the subway carriage fire is performed to determine the more effective operation of Trackway Exhaust System(TES) in underground stations. The four types of possible TES operation (OSUS, OSUE, OEUS and OEUE) is simulated and compared their removal capability of smoke and hot temperature for the carriage fire of 2MW. From the results, the distribution of temperature and smoke concentration is more dependent on the operation of fans located at upper side of the platform than those at lower side. It is also found from the results that for more efficient smoke control, the fans at upper side of the platform should be operated as an exhaust system. Whereas the fans at lower side can be operated as a supply system to aid upper exhaust fans.

  • Unlike ordinary train, the HST(High Speed Train) is operated at a very high speed, which may cause pressure transient problems when the HST is passing through a station. In the present study, the wind pressure caused by the passing HST was measured in the Cheonan HST station and compared with the numerical simulations. For the measurement, the HST was passing through the station at speeds of 240 km/h north bound and 150 km/h south bound. MEMS based differential pressure transducers are used to measure pressure variation at various locations in the station. It is shown from the results that measured data are in good agreement with CFD simulation with moving mesh technique for the train movement. With the present validation of CFD simulation, the CFD simulation may effectively aid the design of future HST station.

  • This study simulates the flow characteristics of the turbo-fan which was applied to the industrial scale. Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate a pulsation behavior of exhaust air that flow out the turbo fan, considering a constant rotating rate of impeller. Moving mesh technique provides time-accurate solutions for the flow inside an impeller. From the numerical results, FFT analysis has been made for pressure pulsations inside turbo-fan casing. The numerical simulation shows the pulsation of model-2 has higher than model. Additionally, BPF value is almost same as the numerical results.
