  • This study identifies intention to move, reasons for moving and housing preferences of US residents 55 and older living in non-subsidized and market-rate multifamily housing in the United States. Data were collected using an on-line survey; mixed methods were used for data analysis (N=431). Results show that more than half of the respondents intend to move. Senior residents who were younger than average age of the respondents, not married, renters, had no elevator, and reported lower residential satisfaction with their housing unit, multifamily housing community and local area were more likely to intend to move. Seven reasons for considering moving were found: finance, health, lifecycle stage, housing unit, multifamily housing community, other. When asked about their future housing, more than 80% desired independent living rather than assisted living facilities or nursing homes, 40% wanted to live in multifamily housing, and 51% hoped to own their housing rather than renting. The findings offer meaningful information to the multifamily housing industry in the United States and in countries where the population is aging and where multifamily housing is the predominant housing type.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic information about efficient space use in the dining and bathing area through the analysis of service flowing. Four researchers observed the service flowing and the using behavior at those areas. The results of the study were as follows: Dining service was proceeded as resident moving, waiting, meal serving, dining, moving and arranging in order. The waiting stage was one of the problematic processes since the staffs made the residents wait to) long at a fixed position. The program right before the meal serving will be helpful for reducing tediousness of the elderly residents. Another problem was that the area was not big enough for the meal sowing. The legal regulation Is needed to prescnbe for the size of dining area per resident. The flowing of bathing service was proceeded as staff preparation, moving, waiting, undressing, bathing, drying, dressing, moving and arranging in order. There were more problems in the dressing area than in the bathing area. The elderly with stretcher or wheelchairs had difficulty in entering the narrow doorway. The dressing area was so crowded with the staffs, undressed elderly, dressed elderly, and other laundries. The division of dressing and undressing area is required to avoid the confusion of the users in the area.

  • This paper presents an optimal design and the performance evaluation of two-axis nano positioning stage with round notched flexure hinges. A flexure hinge mechanism with round notched flexure hinges is to guide the linear motions of a moving plate in the nano positioning stage. A Min-Max algorithm is applied to the design of the flexure hinge mechanism for nano positioning stage. In the design process, the structure of the flexure hinge mechanism is fixed, then the radius of a round hole and the width of two round holes are chosen as design variables, and finally the do sign variables are calculated by the Min-Max algorithm. The machined flexure hinge mechanism, stack type PZTs for actuation and capacitance type displacement sensors for position measurement are assembled into the nano positioning stage. The experimental results of the manufactured nano positioning stage show the first modal resonance frequency of 197 Hz, the operating range of 40 um, and the resolution of 3 nm.

  • This study aimed to analyze the types and characteristics of space forms according to the composition of the stage and auditorium space along with the expression trends in the space of performing arts centers through the cases of modern performing arts centers in America. Today since the purposes of performance are multiple, a variety of stage types are applied to each performing arts center. They use various spaces and performances of multiple purposes by moving and transforming the stage and auditorium according to the kinds of performance as a variation of the arena stage. In today's performing arts centers, the sizes of the stage and auditorium can vary widely, and the performances of many different genres are put to multiple purposes. There appear complex performing arts centers that can plan performing spaces of diverse sizes and forms to fit the functions of a performance in a large building. Since they put on performances in a large space according to the characteristics of the kind of performance, the intentions and goals of the performance are well delivered to the audience.

  • In this paper, we address an active vibration control system, which suppresses the vibration engaged by magnetically levitated stage. The stage system consists of a levitating platen with four permanent magnetic linear synchronous motors in parallel. Each motor generates vertical force for suspension against gravity and propulsion force horizontally as well. This stage can generate six degrees of freedom motion via the vertical and horizontal forces. In the stage system, which represents the settling-time critical system, the motion of the platen vibrates mechanically. We designed an active vibration control system for suppressing vibration due to the stage moving. The command feedforward with inertial feedback algorithm is used for solving stage system's critical problems. The components of the active vibration control system are accelerometers for detecting stage tables's vibrations, a digital controller with high precise signal converters, and electromagnetic actuators.

  • We investigated domains and conoscope under the polarizing microscope and the index of refraction on the c-plate GMO which has the ferroelectric and ferroelastic phase at room temperature. To observed the change of refractive index in connection with domain, we developed an apparatus to obtain the refractive index by measuring the Brewster's angle. The resolution of the minimum rotation angle of this apparatus is $0.001^{\circ}$. To obtain the refractive index map on the sample, the moving distance of XY stage loaded sample holder is 60 mm and the minimum moving distance is 0.002 mm. Also, To obtain the indicatrix for single crystal, vertical turntable with sample holder and XY stage was loading on horizontal turntable. The minimum resolution angle of this vertical turntable is $0.001^{\circ}$. We measured the refractive index of transparent materials such as ferroelectrics. In the case of $Gd_{2}(MoO_{4})_{3}$, the Brewster angle is $62.11^{\circ}$ and then, the refractive index is 1.8895 by using He-Ne Laser. Also the refractive distribution of c-plate GMO was obtained with $400{\mu}m{\times}120{\mu}m$.

  • A computational work has been performed to investigate the aerodynamics of a projectile which is launched from the two-stage light gas gun. A moving coordinate method for a multi-domain technique is employed to simulate unsteady projectile flows with a moving boundary. The effect of a virtual mass is added to the axisymmetric unsteady Euler equation system. The computed results reasonably capture the major flow characteristics which we generated in launching the projectile supersonically, such as the interaction between the shock wave and the blast wave, the interaction between the vortical flow and the barrel shock, and the steady under-expanded jet. The present computational results properly predict the velocity, acceleration, and drag histories of the projectile.

  • Differences in DNA banding patterns, obtained by ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (RISA), and nitrification were followed in a moving-bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) receiving municipal landfill leachate. Complete nitrification (>99%) to nitrate was obtained in the two-stage MBBR system with an ammonium load of 1.09 g N-$NH_4/m^2{\cdot}d$. Increasing the ammonium load to 2.03 g N-$NH_4/m^2{\cdot}d$or more caused a decline in process efficiency to 70-86%. Moreover, at the highest ammonium load (3.76 g N-$NH_4/m^2{\cdot}d$), nitrite was the predominant product of nitrification. Community succession was evident in both compartments in response to changes in ammonium load. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) supported by similarity analysis (ANOSIM) showed that microbial biofilm communities differed between compartments. The microbial biofilm was composed mainly of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), with Nitrosomonas europeae and N. eutropha being most abundant. These results suggest that high ammonium concentrations suit particular AOB strains.

  • In this paper, a moving object detection and face region extraction algorithm which can be used in video monitoring systems is presented. The proposed algorithm is composed of two stages. In the first stage, each frame of an input video sequence is analyzed using three measures which are based on image pixel difference. If the current frame contains moving objects, their skin regions are extracted using color and frame difference information in the second stage. Since the proposed algorithm does not rely on computationally expensive features like optical flow, it is well suited for real-time applications. Experimental results tested on various sequences have shown the robustness of the proposed algorithm.
