  • Air entrainment can become a significant problem in a web handling process. The development of air film between a web and an idle roller can cause a reduction of traction and traction coefficient, by which a slip is occurrred. Computational and experimental study was carried out to describe the slippage of an idle roller for given operating conditions, tension and web velocity. An extended mathematical model to find out a slip condition was developed by using the models of air film height, dynamic traction coefficient, and torque balance of a rotational roller. And by using the extended model, a mechanism to define the slippage between the roller and the moving web was suggested. The results of simulation and experiment showed that the extended dynamic model could properly characterize the rotational motion of the idle roller by considering dynamic traction coefficient. By examining the rotational motion of the idle roller with web dynamics(speed), the mechanism to define al slip condition between the roller and the web was found to be effective.

  • In this study, a durability estimation system of turning centers is developed to systematically evaluate the effects of structural specification and testing condition on the durability. All loads such as weights, inertia forces, cutting force and so on, are automatically transferred from the upper elements to the lower elements by the force flow which can be derived from the structural code of turning center. And the external loads applying to the moving and rolling elements are determined by using the equilibrium conditions of force and moment. Especially, the durability of turning center is estimated based on the lifes of moving and rolling elements under the required testing condition.

  • Numerical investigation is made to study the effects of thermosolutal convection on the formation of macrosegregation in a Pb-Sn alloy solidification process in a two dimensional confined rectangluar mold. The basic equations are sovled using the Contrinum Model theory with the SIMPE algorithm during the solidification process. In addition, to track the liquid-solid interface with time variations, the moving boundary condition was adopted and moving irregular interface shapes were treated with the time-dependent, boundary-fitted coordinate system. As the temperature reduces from the liquidus to the solidus, the liquid concentration of Sn, the lighter constituent, increases. Then the buoyancy-driven flow due to temperature and liquid composition gradients occurs in the mushy region and forms the complicated macrosegregation maps. belated to this phenomena, effects on the macrosegregation formation depending on the cooling condition and gravity values are examined.

  • A moving sliding surface(MSS) was proposed earlier for the second-order variable structure control system(VSCS). The MSS was disigned to pass arbitrary initial conditions, and subsequently moved towards a predetermined sliding surface by rotating and/or shifting. This methodology led to fast and robust control responses of the second-order VSCS, especially in a reaching phase. However, the moving algorithm of the MSS was too complicated to be employed to the high-order VSCS. To resolve this problem, a new moving algorithm based on the fuzzy theory is proposed in this paper. For the generalization of the MSS, the conditions for rotating or shifting are firstly investigated. Then the fuzzy algorithm is formulated by adopting the values of the surface function and the total discontinuity gain as input variables, and the variation of the surface function as output variable. The position control problem of an electrohydraulic servomechanism is adopted in order to demonstrate the efficiency and the feasibility of the proposed MSS associated with fuzzy algorithm.

  • We carried out three-dimensional flow analysis in a clean room. Flow field in a robot experiment system, induced from the moving robot, is numerically studied in this paper. The effects of moving robot in a clean room are investigated in order to find the section of dust accumulation. Contamination on the bottom produced from the moving robot is predicted from the analysis results from the flow fields. Results show that a large swirl flow is formed around the moving robot. Consequently, the optimal flow condition can be obtained by controlling the fluid velocity through the fixing of inlet or outlet position.

  • The wear debris is fall off the moving surfaces in oil-lubricated systems and its morphology is directly related to the damage and failure to the interacting surfaces. The morphology of the wear particles are therefore directly indicative of wear processes occurring in tribological system. The computer image processing and artificial neural network was applied to shape study and identify wear debris generated from the lubricated moving system. In order to describe the characteristics of various wear particles, four representative parameter (50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity) from computer image analysis for groups of randomly sampled wear particles, are used as inputs to the network and learned the friction condition of five values (material 3, applied load 1, sliding distance 1). It is shown that identification results depend on the ranges of these shape parameters learned. The three kinds of the wear debris had a different pattern characteristics and recognized the friction condition and materials very well by neural network. We discuss how these approach can be applied to condition diagnosis of the oil-lubricated tribological system.

  • This paper presents the non-destructive evaluation of a high-speed railway bridge using train-induced strain responses. Based on the train-track-bridge interaction analysis, the strain responses of a high-speed railway bridge under moving trains with different operation status could be calculated. The train induced strain responses could be divided into two parts: the force vibration stage and the free vibration stage. The strain-displacement relationship is analysed and used for deriving critical displacements from theoretical stain measurements at a forced vibration stage. The derived displacements would be suitable for the condition assessment of the bridge through design specifications defined indexes and would show certain limits to the practical application. Thus, the damage identification of high-speed railways, such as the stiffness degradation location, needs to be done by comparing the measured strain response under moving trains in different states because the vehicle types of high-speed railway are relatively clear and definite. The monitored strain responses at the free vibration stage, after trains pass through the bridge, would be used for identifying the strain modes. The relationship between and the degradation degree and the strain mode shapes shows certain rules for the widely used simply supported beam bridges. The numerical simulation proves simple and effective for the proposed method to locate and quantify the stiffness degradation.

  • The purposes of this study are to investigate the living environments, focused on economic and housing environments, of the elderly households in Chungbuk and to provide for the suggestions from the perspective of the well-being of the elderly. The results are as follows: for the economic environment, 70% of the elderly households receive the economic help from children, but the amount of the help is not much. Less than 20% of the households receive the pension and public assistance. Most elderly households had more assets than debt. The households tend to spend more for the necessties than for the non-necessities. The higher the income, the more the assets and the higher the consumption expenditures the higher is the life satisfaction. Therefore it is necessary to provide the elderly with opportunities to increase their income. For the housing environment, most elderly live in their own detached house with average size of 23 pyung. And there is 1.6 households per house. The condition of housing facilities is poor. The elderly prefer staying in the same place to moving, and invest little for their housing even though being able to afford to do so. The housing satisfaction, which is significantly influenced by the ownership the size the quality change in moving and the housing facilities, is correlated with the satisfaction of their condition as elderly households and their living satisfaction. Therefore, thoughtful policy is required to improve the standard of housing condition for the elderly households.

  • The iterative boundary element method (IBEM) developed originally before for cavitating two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) hydrofoils moving under free surface is modified and applied to the case of 2-D (two-dimensional) airfoils and 3-D (three-dimensional) wings over water. The calculation of the steady-state flow characteristics of an inviscid, incompressible fluid past 2-D airfoils and 3-D wings above free water surface is of practical importance for air-assisted marine vehicles such as some racing boats including catamarans with hydrofoils and WIG (Wing-In-Ground) effect crafts. In the present paper, the effects of free surface both on 2-D airfoils and 3-D wings moving steadily over free water surface are investigated in detail. The iterative numerical method (IBEM) based on the Green's theorem allows separating the airfoil or wing problems and the free surface problem. Both the 2-D airfoil surface (or 3-D wing surface) and the free surface are modeled with constant strength dipole and constant strength source panels. While the kinematic boundary condition is applied on the airfoil surface or on the wing surface, the linearized kinematic-dynamic combined condition is applied on the free surface. The source strengths on the free surface are expressed in terms of perturbation potential by applying the linearized free surface conditions. No radiation condition is enforced for downstream boundary in 2-D airfoil and 3-D wing cases and transverse boundaries in only 3-D wing case. The method is first applied to 2-D NACA0004 airfoil with angle of attack of four degrees to validate the method. The effects of height of 2-D airfoil from free surface and Froude number on lift and drag coefficients are investigated. The method is also applied to NACA0015 airfoil for another validation with experiments in case of ground effect. The lift coefficient with different clearance values are compared with those of experiments. The numerical method is then applied to NACA0012 airfoil with the angle of attack of five degrees and the effects of Froude number and clearance on the lift and drag coefficients are discussed. The method is lastly applied to a rectangular 3-D wing and the effects of Froude number on wing performance have been investigated. The numerical results for wing moving under free surface have also been compared with those of the same wing moving above free surface. It has been found that the free surface can affect the wing performance significantly.
