  • Interest has increased in academic research regarding key factors that drive box-office success as well as the ability to predict the box-office success of a movie from a commercial perspective. This study analyzed the relationship between key success factors of a movie and box office records based on movies released in 2010 in Korea. At the pre-production investment decision-making stage, the movie genre, motion picture rating, director power, and actor power were statistically significant. At the stage of distribution decision-making process after movie production, among other factors, the influence of star actors, number of screens, power of distributors, and social media turned out to be statistically significant. We verified movie success factors through the application of a Multinomial Logit Model that used the concept of choice probabilities. The Multinomial Logit Model resulted in a higher level of accuracy in predicting box-office success compared to the Artificial Neural Network and Discriminant Analysis.

  • Many researchers have analyzed the relationship between the financial success patterns of a motion picture and many other factors, such as the production cost, marketing, stars, awards, reviews, genre, and rating. Through these studies, many researchers and investors concluded that big budgets to make a blockbuster movie can serve as an insurance policy to meet their ROI; thus the box office is dominated by blockbuster movies. High-budget blockbuster movies are more likely to receive attention because these movies are more recognizable given their high expenses for production and casting. Therefore, audiences choose blockbusters in an effort to reduce the searching cost and to mitigate the possibility of a regrettable choice. This behavior of consumers, in turn, causes distributors to allocate screens for blockbusters, resulting in "concentration of blockbuster consumption." As such, low-budget films cannot easily become popular due to the lack of distribution. Indeed, low-budget films released on a small number of screens often end up becoming dismal failures. However, there are exceptional examples which are contrary to the general idea in the movie industry that a big budget and showings on a large number of screens can guarantee the success of a movie. Although researchers have attempted to analyze the performances of movies with small budgets, such movies are likely to be regarded as outliers and then be entirely discarded, as they are far from the 'three-sigma' range, especially given that previous research methodologies could not explain the financial success of such unique examples. This study attempts to explain the financial success at the box office of low-budget movies by applying the concept of the tunnel effect in quantum mechanics, as the phenomenon found in the movie industry is similar to a particle's movement in quantum physics. The tunneling effect is a phenomenon by which a particle without enough energy to pass over a potential barrier tunnels through it. Adopting the analogy, this study draws a tunneling probability function and cultural constant to forecast other outliers using the Schrödinger equation. Moreover, the study finds that word-of-mouth creates in the movie industry this phenomenon of finding outliers.

  • With the development of ICT technology, various mobile applications have appeared one after another, and they have penetrated deeply into the lives of individuals. In order to explore the key factors that movie content-related applications should have through empirical studies, this study used the information system success model to investigate the influence of each quality factor on movie consumers' attitudes toward movies and their viewing intentions. As a result of the study, it was derived that the most important factor among the quality factors of movie content-related applications was the information quality factor, followed by the service quality being the next most important factor. In this study, based on the results of this study, the direction of application related to movie contents as a new distribution channel was proposed by suggesting a way to improve applications related to movie contents for the development of the domestic movie industry.

  • This study aims to find out success factors of crowdfunding on movie projects. For empirical analysis, we collected 583 data of the movie projects from the crowdfunding platform 'Tumblbug'. To figure out the success factors, we examined effects of 10 independent variables on 1 dependent variable. The independent variable includes target amount, project information, reward options, creator funding power, editor recommendation, creator contents power, movie type, number of comments, number of replies, and number of SNS information. The final achievement rate of crowdfunding was set as dependent variable. This study found that the target amount, number of text information, number of video information, editor recommendation, number of backers' reply, and number of SNS information had a significant impact on the achievement rate of the movie crowdfunding project. This study has implications in that it has discovered a variable of editor recommendation and the number of SNS information, and both of them have a positive effect on crowdfunding achievement.

This research attempts to explore the influencing factors on the success of movie euqity crowdfunding project. We use 'number of texts', 'number of images', 'star influence power', 'IP-based movie project', 'movie production stage', 'box office prediction', 'investment capital ratio', 'amount of surplus available investment', 'profit calculation method' and 'minimum investment amount' as independent variables. And we examined how these factors affects the achievement rate of movie crowdfunding. As a result of multiple regression analysis, 'movie production stage', 'investment capital ratio', 'amount of surplus available investment' and 'profit calculation method' have a significant effect on the crowdfunding achievement rate. In this regard, this study derived the success factors by comparing and analyzing the narrative structure and visual elements of , which was the biggest hit movie, with the original webtoon. The case analysis showed that there are two necessary elements for success: a text configuration of strategy optimized for media conversion, which is based on understanding the different media characteristics of webtoon and movie; and a configuration strategy that exaggerates the personalities of the characters and compresses the story of a webtoon which features various events and many characters in a long series, in consideration of the characteristics of movie which needs to give a big impact in 2 hours.

  • This study aims to find out predictors of a movie's eventual box office, focusing on a movie's box office rank on an opening day. For an empirical analysis, I use data of 794 commercial movies released in the Korean theatrical exhibition market during the recent five years(2013~2017). The regression analysis shows that being box office number one on an opening day has statistically significant impact on a movie's final box office. A movie's quality, measured by audience's review, does not give significant impact on top1 movie's final success. Indexes such as increase of showing number on Sunday are strongly related to a movie's economic success. The additional analysis on box office number one movie on an opening day, totally 158 movies, finds that box office growth rate on a second week is strongly related to a movie's final success. Lastly, correlation coefficient of a movie's opening day box office and final box office does not show consistent growth when the coefficient is compared yearly. This study might have meaning in that it proposes new box office predictors and shows the relation of the indexes and a movie's final performance empirically.
