Since the 2000s, news coverage was changed to reproduce various images rather than being fixed to particular images, and the subject of report became more diversified through comparison of domestic and foreign topics. In addition, articles in the form of book review decreased and the interview-type articles increased in number, and in the case of male movie stars, the proportion of articles based on works was high in comparison to female movie stars. This study has significance in that it explored the changes in the process of reproducing star images diachronically from the initial stage of stars to the modern times. And it is hoped that this study will serve as basic data for the follow-up studies on the process of reproducing various images in the multi-media era.

  • The advancement of the Science for complex systems enables the analysis of many social networks. We constructed and analyzed a Korean movie star network as one of social networks, based on the 100 Korean movie selection for a main data source. Until now, the research trend has been the structural analysis of network, focused on link numbers, such as degree, betweenness and clustering coefficient. But it is time that the research is not limited by the structural analysis of networks only. Rather, the research goal should be aimed to an information analysis, performed by identifying and analyzing central modules that are regarded as the core of complex networks, using k-core analysis method. In this research, we constructed a network of movie stars who have appeared in 100 Korean movie selection, provided by Korean movie database, also we analyzed its core modules with and without weights, and the trend of seasonal expansion of the network. We expect our findings can be used as the basic data applicable to a model for understanding of the expansion and evolution of networks.

  • Movie network as a social network shows power-law distribution that is one of distinct properties in scale-free network. We constructed movie network from 799 Korea movies that screened from 2000 to 2009 and analyzed structural properties of the network. The 799 movies was classified three groups as a spectator mobilizing power. One million spectators mobilizing power movie was denoted the first class. The best 10 movie directors who produced at least three movies for ten years and had 70% the first class movie of them were selected. We also preferred the best 20 movie actors who played at least five movies for ten years and had 70% the first class movie of them. We re-constructed core movie network that composed the best 10 directors, the best 20 movie stars, and 157 movies that were produced by the directors or were played by the movie stars. We predict a possible combination of the director and movie actor as a category of the movie that has highly spectator mobilizing power. Here, we provide insight and method for producing high spectators mobilizing power movies

  • Many researchers have analyzed the relationship between the financial success patterns of a motion picture and many other factors, such as the production cost, marketing, stars, awards, reviews, genre, and rating. Through these studies, many researchers and investors concluded that big budgets to make a blockbuster movie can serve as an insurance policy to meet their ROI; thus the box office is dominated by blockbuster movies. High-budget blockbuster movies are more likely to receive attention because these movies are more recognizable given their high expenses for production and casting. Therefore, audiences choose blockbusters in an effort to reduce the searching cost and to mitigate the possibility of a regrettable choice. This behavior of consumers, in turn, causes distributors to allocate screens for blockbusters, resulting in "concentration of blockbuster consumption." As such, low-budget films cannot easily become popular due to the lack of distribution. Indeed, low-budget films released on a small number of screens often end up becoming dismal failures. However, there are exceptional examples which are contrary to the general idea in the movie industry that a big budget and showings on a large number of screens can guarantee the success of a movie. Although researchers have attempted to analyze the performances of movies with small budgets, such movies are likely to be regarded as outliers and then be entirely discarded, as they are far from the 'three-sigma' range, especially given that previous research methodologies could not explain the financial success of such unique examples. This study attempts to explain the financial success at the box office of low-budget movies by applying the concept of the tunnel effect in quantum mechanics, as the phenomenon found in the movie industry is similar to a particle's movement in quantum physics. The tunneling effect is a phenomenon by which a particle without enough energy to pass over a potential barrier tunnels through it. Adopting the analogy, this study draws a tunneling probability function and cultural constant to forecast other outliers using the Schrödinger equation. Moreover, the study finds that word-of-mouth creates in the movie industry this phenomenon of finding outliers.

  • This study is related to determination of the intention to watch a movie, which is affected by various emotional, environmental, and behavioral factors. In case of personal factors, personal taste formed on the basis of previously experienced movie related information affects selection of movies, while environmental factors are affected mostly by residental community experience, cognitive attitude, subjective norms, as well as the view of values. In this study, the determinants on decision to watch movie have been analyzed applying the theory of planned behavior. Taking into consideration that the determination, based on either personal factors or environmental factors, of consuming movie products stars from reasonable information collecting and that movie poster has been the primary source of information on movie products since the inception of the movie industry, this study analyzed tastes of movie watchers and many variables of movie poster format on determination of intention to watch movie. The results from this empirical study indicate that movie poster is effective means of low cost marketing inducing movie watching in terms of consuming minimum time and space with high speed of delivery while satisfying primary interest on the movie product. It is suggested movie posters should be prepared to make appeal to each generation of target consumers and be put on the market as a product of artistic work.

  • In the past, the elements that determine the movie performance were directors, movie stars, the number of opening screens, on-line ratings or distributing agencies. However, the word-of-mouth effect has changed this trends. So the influence of word of mouth grows more and more strong at this stage of the Internet and smart phones being widely prevalent. I fix my sight upon SNS which is one of the medium of arousing the word-of-mouth effect, and I have a purpose to cast light upon a real example of the influence of SNS on the movie performance. The way is to analyze SNS activities that accompany the process of production and showing of , which is said to have had an beneficial effect of SNS among the enormously successful movies last year. It is relevant to provide a new milestone regarding the movie performance through the successful case of SNS activities by examining the word-of-mouth activities through SNS in the manner of the period division of the pre-release, the early stage of release and the maturity.
