  • This study investigated the effects of indirectly applying proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) to the scapular adductor muscles of stroke patients on their scapular movements and walking ability. Five patients who were diagnosed with stroke participated in this study as a single group. PNF patterns were applied to the scapulae anterior elevation and posterior depression patterns and upper limbs patterns of the patients in side lying and sitting positions together. The data were analyzed with a paired t-test in order to identify within-group differences in the measurements before and after the intervention. The scapular movements of the upper and lower parts, weight bearing and walking speed were significantly improved in the stroke patients after the application of PNF (p<0.05). These results suggest that PNF training effective in improving the scapular movements and walking ability in patients with stroke.

  • Periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS) are best described as repetitive stereotypical movements of the lower extremities characterized by dorsiflexion of the ankle, dorsiflexion of the toes and a partial flexion of the knee and sometimes the hip. The prevalence of PLMS is about 5-11% in adults and is predicted much higher than previously surveyed. They are also frequently found in various sleep disorders, several disorders not primarily affecting sleep, and patients taking psychiatric medications. Although they are rarely found in children, they are common findings in children referred to a pediatric sleep laboratory. The pathophysiology is strongly associated with decline of central dopaminergic function and closely related to arousal system during sleep. Benzodiazepines, levodopa, dopamine agonists and opioids are generally recommended for treatment but more controlled studies on the effectiveness are needed.

  • AS human movements have the inherent property of anticipating target and can be coordinated to realize a given schedule, finger movements have stereotyped patterns during hand grasping. Finger movements have been studied in the past to find out the coordination pattern of hand joint angular movement. These studies analyzed only a few finger joints for a limited number of hand postures. This study investigated fourteen joint angles during eight hand-grasping motions to analyze the angular correlations between finger joints and to suggest motion factors which represent hand grasping. Hand grasping motions including forward arm motion were examined in ten healthy volunteers. Eight objects were used to represent real hand grasping tasks. $CyberGlove^{TM}$ and $Fasreack^{TM}$ measured hand joint angles and wrist origin. Joint angle correlations between PIJ(proximal interphalangeal joint) and MPJ(metacarpophalangeal joint) at one finger, between neighboring PIJs and MPJs were four factors related to the fast phase of hand grasping motions and eight factors related to the slow phase of hand grasping motions.

  • Many companies in Korea have introduced and put Six Sigma to the practical use recently, others are under consideration to introduce it. As we consider how to recognize and to apply it, we are able to know there is a difference among companies and it differently influence on those companies. In this paper, we analyze the structural differences between Quality Management and Six Sigma movements through the questiionnaire designed effectively to investigate them. We also examine the controversial points, suitability as the management model, the level of Quality Management and Six Sigma movements, and analyze how much the movements effect on the management activities. Finally, we show how to improve the Quality Management and Six Sigma movements in Korean companies.

  • We investigate interconnectedness and the contagion effect of default risk in Asian sovereign CDS markets since the global financial crisis. Using dynamic conditional correlation analysis, we find that there are significant co-movements in Asian sovereign CDS markets; that such co-movements tend to be larger between developing countries than between developed and developing countries; and that in the co-movements intra-regional nature is stronger than inter-regional nature. With the Spillover Index model, we measure contagion probabilities of sovereign default risk in CDS markets of seven Asian countries and find evidence of contagion effects among six of them; Japan is the exception. In addition, we find that these six countries are affected more by cross-market spillovers than by their own-market spillovers. Furthermore, a rolling-sample analysis reveals that contagion in the Asian sovereign CDS markets expands during episodes of extreme economic and financial distress, such as the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy, the European financial crisis, and the US-credit downgrade.

  • This paper describes an adaptive management approach for predicting, monitoring, and controlling ground movements associated with excavations in urban areas. Successful use of monitoring data to update performance predictions of supported excavations depends equally on reasonable numerical simulations of performance, the type of monitoring data used as observations, and the optimization techniques used to minimize the difference between predictions and observed performance. This paper summarizes each of these factors and emphasizes their inter-dependence. Numerical considerations are described, including the initial stress and boundary conditions, the importance of reasonable representation of the construction process, and factors affecting the selection of the constitutive model. Monitoring data that can be used in conjunction with current numerical capabilities are discussed, including laser scanning and webcams for developing an accurate record of construction activities, and automated and remote instrumentations to measure movements. Self-updating numerical models that have been successfully used to compute anticipated ground movements, update predictions of field observations and to learn from field observations are summarized. Applications of these techniques from case studies are presented to illustrate the capabilities of this approach.

  • Periodic limb movements during sleep (PLMS) are prevalent in various sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome (RLS), periodic limb movements disorder, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), and narcolepsy. PLMS has been hypothesized to be related to the decline of dopaminergic transmission. In RLS, PLMS is suggested to be related to iron deficiency and symptom severity. PLMD is a rare sleep disorder, and the role of PLMS in PLMD has not been clearly investigated yet. PLMS in OSA, which remain after proper PAP therapy, may need further management. The clinical relevance of PLMS in RBD and narcolepsy have not been investigated thoroughly and need further studies. Whether PLMS are to be considered as a mere symptom of individual sleep disorders or not can be elucidated through studies investigating the efficacy of therapeutic approaches to reduce PLMS in various sleep disorders.

  • In this paper, we propose a 3D automated measuring system which measures the mandibular movements and the reference plane of the jaw movements. In diagnosis and treatment of the malocclusions, it is necessary to estimate the mandibular movements and the reference plane of the jaw movements. The proposed system is configured with double stereo-cameras, PC, two moving pattern plates(MPPs), two fixed pattern plates(FPPs) and one orbital marker. The virtual pattern plate is applied to calculate the homogeneous transformation matrices which describe the coordinates systems of the FPP and MPP with respect to the world coordinates system. To estimate the parameters of the hinge axis, the Euler's theorem is applied. The hinge axis points are intersections between the FPPs and the hinge axis. The coordinates of a hinge axis point with respect to the MPP coordinates system are set up to fixed value. And then, the paths of the jaw movement can be calculated by applying the homogeneous transformation matrix to fixed hinge axis point. To examine the accuracy of the measurements, experiments of measuring the hinge axis points and floating paths of them are performed using the jaw motion simulator. As results, the measurement errors of the hinge axis points are within reasonable boundary, and the floating paths are very similar to the simulator's moving path.

  • An observation and evaluation of the reproducibility of the mandibular movements has been a integral part of a test for mandibular function and dysfunction. After Pantographic Reproducibility Index(PRI) was introduced in dentistry, many authors have used the index for investigation of mandibular movement function, especially in condylar compartment. Howerer, the difficult and time-consuming work of instrumentation for getting the PRI has been a major obstacle in using pantograph. This study was performed to try a new mandibular reproducibility index, so-called BioEGN reproducibility index(BERI), calculated from mandibular trajectory recorded with BioEGN. 26 dental students without any signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders and 22 patients with temporomandibular disorders took part in this study and classed to control group and patients group, respectively. Pantronic and BioEGN were used to record and calculate the indices, PRI and BERI. PRI had only one value, but BERI had two values of outgoing and incoming movement in each scale. With two scales of small and large, as a result, BERI had four values in this study. PRI corresponded to BERI in small scale on outgoing total movements. The data were calculated and analyzed with SAS/stat program and the conclusion of this study were as follows : 1. In every scales, in each movement, BERI on outgoing movement in control group was lower than that in patients group, respectively, but BERI on incoming movement was only different in one side movement, that was, left excursion. 2. The difference between BERI on outgoing movement and BERI on incoming movement was only shown in small scale on total movements, not in each movement, in control group. However, there was generally a positive correlationship between BERI on outgoing movement and BERI on incoming movement in each movement in both groups. 3. Simple statistics of PRI was similar to that of BERI on total movements in small scale, but there was a negative correlation between PRI and BERI on total movements in large sclae only in patients group.
