  • The movement of the caisson used to construct a wharf front can affect functional performance of the port. Sequential movement of caissons at each stage of the construction is essential in the overall design as well as the stability of the port. It is common that back-analysis using the previous measurement is performed to predict the caisson movement, while there is no intensive study on sequential movement of the caissons according to the construction stage. In the study, we analyzed the pattern of the movement of caissons as a port is constructed. To simulate the construction of the port, the finite element method (FEM) is employed. The computed result shows that the caisson moves differently at each construction stage. When the caisson is being installed, the displacement of the caisson takes place mainly in vertical direction. In next stage of filling rocks behind the caisson, the top of the caisson move toward shore, while the bottom moves toward sea, thus rotating the caisson. The maximum rotation of the caisson takes place in the stage of filling rocks behind the caisson.

  • In order to investigate the rates and factors of slow mass movement on a subalpine slope of Mount Halla, two painted stone lines were monitored in a bare patch at 1,710 m a.s.l. The mean movement of surface gravels is 58.2 cm, equivalent to 0.24 cm/day. However, the rates of movement vary with seasons. Compared with 0.05 cm/day of a non-frozen season, a frozen season shows 0.3 cm/day. It implies that the movement of surface gravels could be largely controlled by periglacial processes during a frozen season. In particular, frost creep including needle ice creep plays a main role in the movement of gravels under the thermal and soil conditions which are favorable for needle ice development. Since line II is located at a steeper slope than line I, the movement of line II was always larger than that of line I. However, slope gradient is not the most dominant factor contributing the movement of gravels, which can be interrupted by downslope big gravels and vegetation patches. The size and specific weight of gravels also can influence the movement of gravels. Porous and light scoriae result in relatively quick movement of gravels on the subalpine slope of Mount Halla.

  • This article defines the characteristics of Korean vegetarianism by tracing the changes in the core motives revealed in the historical development of the vegetarian movement that started in the West. We further explore and compare the limitations of the vegetarian movement conceived in the West with the essential values, 'How can Korean vegetarian culture gain the upper hand?'. Our results indicate that the sequential changes of the motives inherent to the flow of the modern vegetarian movement were <religious-philosophy>, <political-society>, and <healthy-nutrition>. This settled the transition from 'vegetarianism as an ideological form' to 'vegetarianism as a lifestyle', making it a more becoming way of life. However, along with the spread of 'vegetarian lifestyle as a form of life', commercial vegetarianism, which overshadows the essential value of vegetarianism, continued to flourish due to the modern capitalist industrial system. To curb commercialization, the necessity arose to establish a new vegetarian diet with a propensity towards an 'ecological-environmental point of view'. Thus, in order to establish the term and concept of a vegetarian diet for Korean vegetarian characteristics, we propose the formation of a vegetarian term and concept suitable for the Korean vegetarian culture.

  • Yiguandao missions arrived in Korea no later than 1947. Despite many obstacles, including war and internal dissension, the movement has flourished in South Korea. Today there are three active major lineages and another seven smaller networks. This article relates the movement's overall development in Korea. We begin by discussing key missions dispatched to Korea by Yiguandao's founder Zhang Tianran. The northern port city of Tianjin was key to this effort, in particular a single temple, the Hall of Morality. In Korea the leaders found an unfamiliar cultural landscape that was soon engulfed in war. The Yiguandao missions tended to develop independently, without coordination. In an effort to unify the movement, the Morality Foundation was established in Busan in 1952. The article shows how Yiguandao's subsequent success in Korea is connected to the development of indigenous leadership. Local Korean leadership ousted Chinese members from the Morality Foundation in 1954, and this branch has continued under Korean leadership to this day. The ousted Chinese leaders continued to develop their own lineages. Two major leaders, Zhang Ruiquan and Kim Bokdang, were able to establish enduring legacies. A final section looks at organizational traits that will determine the movement's future prospects in modern Korean society.

  • The korean society confronts with social problems which are resulted from the rapid development of science and technology. While the governments politic has concentrated on the economic application of science and technology, various citizens groups have been organized to solve the social problems by themselves. Historically the so called citizens movement in the field of science and technology was formed with the influence of students movement in 1970s. The activities and the aim of the movement have changed in accordance with the state of the korean society. They pay more attention to the enhancement of citizens participation in the development of science and technology. This paper is intended to evaluate the role of the citizens organizations in terms of their participation in the policy-making, formation of alternative scientist and engineer. The practices of the organizations are classified in three periods which corresponds to the process of social movement in Korea. It is further attempted to suggest the future role of those organizations.

  • This paper is the study on the activity of citizen participation in the movement of Million Amenity Park's creation which was proposed by citizen participation for large scale's flat park within city. This park was proposed by the Busan Green Plan, commission study in 1999. The location of Park site was finally proposed at Dunchi-do, Bonglim-dong, Gangseo-gu, Busan and neighbor areas. The area of park site is approximately 500ha included the surface area of West-Nakdong River. Citizen's organization for Million Amenity Park which has 3,500 members, was established in 2001 in order to compose Million Amenity Park The development processes of this study were found to have quickening period, germination period, the 1st growing period, and the 2nd growing period, and then the results of this activity was also arranged by the researcher of this study. The movement for this park was found to have a positive activity for participating and understanding all the citizens during 7 years. And then the activities for this park were as follows: every information, fund-raising campaign, organization, purchase of park site, contribution of purchasing park site to Busan city. The results of this study, through the movement of citizen's participation such as this park movement were 1) respectively found to have the settlement in the movement of NGO, 2) the possibility of large scale's park fostering by public and civil partnership, and 3) the model presentation of frontier park in the citizen participation's types which will be able to introduce the development of city.
