The objective of this study was to determine whether there are differences in hand muscle activities (APB : abductor pollicis brevis, ED : extensor digitorum, ECU : extensor carpi ulnaris, and EI : extensor indicis) and subjective discomfort according to the three mouse sizes (small, medium, large) and two task types (pointing and scrolling). The mouse size and task type showed significant interaction effects on the total NEMG (p = 0.004) and on the NEMG of the abductor pollicis brevis muscle (p = 0.001). The total NEMG and the NEMG of APB showed the highest value in the 'scrolling' task using the 'small' mouse. However, the NEMG of the EI was different according to the mouse size, and the 'small' mouse showed the lowest value. The subjective discomfort was the lowest in the 'medium' mouse, and all nine subjects preferred the 'medium' size. The hand-size related anthropometric variables showed different correlations according to the task type and mouse size with the NEMGs and subjective discomfort. The results of this study could be used as a basic information for the determination of the proper mouse size according to the hand size.

This paper presents a vibrotactile space mouse which use pin-type vibrotactile display modules and a gyroscope chip. This mouse is a new interface device which is not only an input device as an ordinary space mouse but also a tactile output device. It consists of a space mouse which use gyroscope chip and vibrotactile display modules which have been developed in our own laboratory. Lately, by development of vibrotactile display modules which have small size and consume low power, vibrotactile displays are available in small sized embedded systems such as wireless mouses or mobile devices. Also, development of new sensors like miniature size gyroscope by MEMS technology enables manufacturing of a small space mouse which can be used in the air not in a plane. The vibrotactile space mouse proposed in this paper recognizes motion of a hand using the gyroscope chip and transmits the data to PC through Bluetooth. PC application receives the data and moves pointer. Also, 2 by 3 arrays of pin-type vibrotactile actuators are mounted on the front side of the mouse where fingers of a user's hand contact, and those actuators could be used to represent various information such as gray-scale of an image or Braille patterns for visually impared persons.
In order to investigate the factors affecting the culture of mouse preantral follicles in vitro, we examined the effect of culture media, protein supplements, and culture period on their growth. The oocyte diameter (initial size: $55.6{\pm}2.5{\mu}m$) was progressively increased during culture, and the maximum size ($72.0{\pm}2.4{\mu}m$) was reached on day 10 of the in vitro culture. The chromatin configuration in the germinal vesicle (GV) oocyte progressively shifted from a non-surrounded nucleolus (NSN) to a surrounded nucleolus (SN). On day 10 of the culture, most of the oocytes progressed to the SN pattern. The survival and metaphase II rates of the oocytes in alpha-minimal essential medium (alpha-MEM) were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those in Waymouth and tissue culture medium (TCM)-199. As a protein source, fetal bovine serum (FBS) was more suitable for the culture of mouse preantral follicles as compared to human follicular fluid (hFF) and bovine serum albumin (BSA); the optimal concentration of FBS was 5%. These results suggest that in a culture of mouse preantral follicles, alpha-MEM and 5% FBS are an optimal medium and a protein source, respectively; further, the 10 days of culture is required for the complete growth of oocytes in this culture system.
Three kinds of mouse tumor necrosis factor (TNF), which have molecular weights of 35 kDa, 45 kDa, and 18 kDa on SDS-PAGE, were partially purified from serum-free culture supernatants of mouse peritoneal macrophages induced with lipopolysaccharide. Analysis of the native molecular weights by gel filtration indicated that the 18 kDa and 45 kDa TNFs aggregate into 50 kDa and 100 kDa molecules, respectively, while the 35 kDa TNF is contained in high molecular weight aggregates of approximately 200 kDa. The three kinds of cytotoxic factors all elicited tumor reducing responses.
Experimentally, primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) is induced by Naegleria fowleri in mouse and development of PAM may be inauenced by the strain, weight and sex of mouse, and inoculum size of N. fowleri trophozoite. In this paper, the effect of these factors on PAM development of mouse was studied. N. fowleri trophozoites, strain 0359, were introduced into mouse intranasally under secobarbital anesthesia (0.05mg/g). 1. PAM was developed more frequently in BALB/C mouse than ICR mouse. 2. The survival time of mouse with PAM was influenced by the weight, that is, it was shorter in 15 g mouse than in the heavier groups. 3. No difEerence was observed on PAM development according to sect. 4. In case of inoculated amoeba, PAM incidence of $0.5{\times}10^4$ was markedly decreased.
Obesity is caused by imbalance of energy intake and expense. If energy intake is more than its expenditure, body does fat accumulation and affects body weight. It can be fetal disease although obesity is not disease in itself. Central regulatary system is affected by many neurotransmitters regulating .food intake in brain. Hypothalamus was known as one of food intake regulation in CNS. In order to investigate gene expression difference in hypothalamus by different nutrient, we used C57/BL6 control mouse and db-/db- mouse. They divided each of two group with mouse, and fed control diet and high-fat diet for 4 weeks. Each of control and high-fat diet contained 11.7% and 59.7% fat, respectively. Then we performed microarray assay with them. We compared among changed genes in hypothalamus region. In the results, we observed that increased genes were more than decreased genes. Although hypothalamus size of db-/db- mouse is smaller than that of C57/BL6, more genes were affected in db-/db- mouse. In this study, many genes are affected by nutrient in hypothalamus region.
To establish in vivo antiviral evaluation system by using murine herpesvirus intracerebral infection model, 5-6 female BALB/c mice per group aged 5 weeks were inoculated i.c. into cerebrum with different inocular HSV-1 F. Signs of clinical disease noted everyday for one month. Observed were body weight decrease, neurological signs and death caused by encephalitis. Mice discontinued body weight decrease were recovered from the disease, and keratitis was often observed during recovery. The groups inoculated with higher than 1,000 PFU showed 100% mortaltiy and $LD_{50}$ was <100 PFU/mouse. To study the effect of virus inoculum sizes on antiviral effect of acyclovir (ACV), mice inoculated with different inocula were administered i.p. with different doses of ACV immediately after infection, and twice a day for 5 days. The higher inculum size, the less protective. $ED_{50}$ of ACV was >25, >25, 18.4 and 8.0 mg/kg b.i.d. in the group infected with 1,000,000, 100,000, 10,000 and 1,000 PFU/mouse, respectively. $LD_{50}$ of ACV was 62.5 mg/kg b.i.d. Therapeutic index of ACV was <2.5, <2.5, 3.0 and 7.0 in the groups with inocula 1,000,000, 100,000, 10,000 and 1,000 PFU/mouse, respectively. Inoculum size 1,000 PFU/mouse showing 100% mortaltiy and 5-6 days mean time to death, 5 days drug administration and 14 days observation will be future experimental conditions.

Recently, various types of camera mouse are developed using the image processing. The camera mouse showed limited performance compared to the traditional optical mouse in terms of the response time and the usability. These problems are caused by the mismatch between the size of the monitor and that of the active pixel area of the CMOS Image Sensor. To overcome these limitations, we designed a new input device that uses the face recognition as well as the speech recognition simultaneously. In the proposed system, the area of the monitor is partitioned into 'n' zones. The face recognition is performed using the web-camera, so that the mouse pointer follows the movement of the face of the user in a particular zone. The user can switch the zone by speaking the name of the zone. The multimodal mouse is analyzed using the Keystroke Level Model and the initial experiments was performed to evaluate the feasibility and the performance of the proposed system.
Four external and 27 cranial characters of striped field mice (Apodemus agrarius) from 16 regions in China and Korea, representing six subspecies, were analyzed by multivariate methods. Three subgroups were recognized: the large-size form from Cheju island, Korea (subspecies chejuensis), the middle-size form from the Korean peninsula (subspecies coreae), and the small-size form from China (subspecies manchuricus, pallidior, ningpoensis, insulaemus). It was confirmed that four subspecies of striped field mouse from China can be classified into subspecies ningpoensis, as noted by Corbet (1978), and that subspecies coreae and chjuensis are distinct subspecies, as stated by Jones and Johnson (1965). In the future, morphometric analyses with striped field mice from Europe and Russia will be necessary to confirm subspecies classification of A. agrarius agrarius.
