This study deals with the spatio-temporal change of land cover and vegetation distribution between 1988 and 2001 using remote sensing images and CIS techniques in west area of Pyeongbuk Province, northwest Korea. Landsat TM and ETM images are geometrically and radiometrically corrected for the analysis of land cover and NDVI. Forested areas are decreased during 13 year from 1988 to 2001 in study area including Sakju, Daegwan, Guseong and Euiju of Pyeongbuk Province, because wasteland are increased by human impact and denuded land by landslide and flooding. DEM analysis presents that settlement and cropland are developed toward higher and steeper mountain slope, together with decrease NDIV values. these changes have resulted from unplanned increase of cropland without consideration of geomorphic condition. Therefore, more researches and reasonable policies are required to protect forest and cropland and stable food supply against natural hazard like landslide.
Baekdudaegan field survey has been proposed and presented as a various plan such as field survey analysis, management and restoration plan, etc. Whereas, the concerns of the Jeongmaek has increased continuously, nevertheless there is no research of present condition for Jeongmaek. This paper is to contribute to suggest for management and restoration as a basic study of vegetation structure in Yongso valley. We set up 30 plots($100m^2$) to verify the vegetation structure. As a result of classification analysis used by DCA, the type of 5 communities i.e. Pinus densiflora community, Betula schmidtii community, Populus maximowiczii community, Quercus mongolica community, Q. variabilis community were the most representative of Yongso valley vegetation communities. P. densiflora community was mainly distributed in the ridge of mountain, ridge of steep slope and stony area. In that reason, they avoid to compete with B. schmidtii community and Q. spp. community. In addition, the appearance of Rhododendron micranthum was mainly characteristics in the P. densiflora community. Species diversity indices(H') of groups were ranged from 0.7914~0.9942, the tree ages were 30~115 years. According to these results, the forests of Yongso valley not only form muti-layer vegetation structures but also have a great ecological value for protection and preservation.
This is a comparative study focused on the scenic landscape preferences derived from visitors's perceptions at the Dulle-gil and the uphill trail in Bukhansan National Park. Unlike previous landscape assessment methods, this study contains more direct and on-site analysis with methods of understanding the visitors' perceptions by using 'visitor employed photography(VEP)' which requires each visitor to take preferable scenic landscape with one's own smart phone camera. The scenic landscape types at two different trails were categorized and then the types favoring most of participants were verified. There are total number of 16 visual landscape types preferred by participants at both the Dulle-gil and the uphill trail in Bukhansan National Park. As in terms of consensus photography(CP) on the Dulle-gil was found to have more diverse elements including both natural and artificial elements compare to the uphill trail. Furthermore, the perceptually excited node(PEN) at the Dulle-gill were found to be more scattered evenly whereas PEN at the uphill trail were concentrated on the entrance and the top of the mountain. It is necessary to consider that the scenic landscape management at the Dulle-gil and the uphill trail require different approaches. Facilities were set based on careful consideration of distinctive geographical features and vegetation in the Dulle-gil. And the management need to be focus on the 'forested area' maintaining natural state in the uphill trail. Futhermore, the result of the CP and PEN in the trails would be helpful to proceed the next step of landscape perception study depending on characteristics of groups.
Since FAO introduced the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems(GIAHS) in 2002, 36 sites of 15 countries so far have been listed on GIAHS. This study aims to find the important agricultural heritages of Korea and to prepare the methods for them to be selected as GIAHS. We have analyzed the proposals of the 36 GIAHS listed in order to study the characteristics of their components of the agricultural heritage which worked for being selected. To analyze the components of the agricultural heritage first, agricultural heritage was classified into 13 types and 42 components in light of GIAHS criteria. Then central themes were set to analyze the relevant contents in the proposals. They were, the type of GIAHS Site, significant agricultural landscape, the agriculture-forestry-fisheries-livestock linkage systems, the multi-layered, inter-cropping, circulation cultivation systems, the soil and water management systems, the conservation of agrobiological diversity and genetic resources, the history of the agricultural heritage, the succession of traditional farming techniques, the cultural diversity and so on. Most GIAHS are located in mountains, grasslands, rivers and coasts, desert than in plains, through which GIAHS assure us that it is the heritage of human challenge to overcome the harsh geographic environment and maintain a livelihood. In these sites the traditional farming techniques are carried on, such as mountain clearings, terraced rice paddies, and burn fields, and the unique irrigation systems and agricultural landscapes are well maintained, and the eco-friendly traditional farming techniques utilizing abundant forest resources and agriculture are well handed down. The origin or home of crop growing, a variety of genetic crop storage, the world's largest crop producer and preserving cultural diversity are also important factors for the selection.
To investigate the vegetation structure of mountain ridges ranging from Sebong to Gwaneumbong 23 plots($400m^2$) set up with random sampling method were surveyed. Two groups of Pinus densiflora community, Pinus densiflora-Quercus variabilis-Quercus serrata community were classified by cluster analysis. Pinus densiflora, Quercus variabilis, Quercus serrata, Carpinus laxiflora, and Quecus mongolica were found as a mostly dominant woody plant species in the ridge area from Sebong to Gwaneumbong. In the future, the importance percentage of Pinus densiflora might be decreased, but those of Quercus variabilis, Quercus serrata, Carpinus laxiflora, and Quecus mongolica might be increased. High positive correlations were proved between Quercus variabilis and Fraxinus sieboldiana, Acer palmatum and Ilex macropoda, Cornus kousa and Platycarya strobilacea, Sorbus alnifolia and Carpinus laxiflora, and relatively weak negative correlations were proved between Pinus densiflora and Carpinus laxiflora, Fraxinus sieboldiana and Carpinus laxiflor, Quecus mongolica and Sorbus alnifolia, Ilex macropoda and Sorbus alnifolia. Species diversity index(H') of investigated groups was ranged $0.665{\sim}1.169$.
An endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium was isolated from forest soil samples collected at the Taebaek mountain of Gangwon province, Korea, and taxonomically characterized by physiological, biochemical and phylogenetic methods. Its 16S rRNA sequences showed the maximum similarity of 97% with B. amyloliquefaciens. In addition, the isolate BCNU 2002 was determined to have the ability to produce enzymes such as amylase, protease, gelatinase and catalase. The in vitro antifungal activity of Bacillus sp. BCNU 2002 was also examined against human pathogenic fungi such as Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, Epidermophyton floccosum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton rubrum. A maximum production level of antifungal substances of Bacillus sp. BCNU 2002 was achieved under aerobic incubation at $28^{\circ}C$ for 7 days in LB broth. BCNU 2002 showed strong antifungal activities against T. mentagrophytes and T. rubrum with the range of percentage inhibition from 56.25 to 63.23%. It was also confirmed that ethylacetate extract of cultured broth showed a strong antifungal activity against A. niger, C. albicans, S. cerevisiae and T. rubrum by agar diffusion method. The peptide fraction also exhibited broad antifungal spectrum against various pathogenic fungi. The minimum inhibitory concentration values for active extracts ranged between 125 ${\mu}g$/mL and 1000 ${\mu}g$/mL.

The Seoul Housing Corporation pronounced a design competition for Eunpyeng New Town District 2 in March of 2005. The authors collaborated on this design and won rot prize. Design guidelines of this competition were to make environmentally sustainable design, to develop as a resort site and cultural place for everyday life of residents, to link with green fabric of the district, and to elevate positive image and identity of Eunpyeng New Town district by creating a attractive landscape. The authors developed design concept and strategy within the guidelines and site conditions. The environmental setting of this site was characterized by mountain to the rear of the site with a stream passing through the district and the front of the site. This is the most important condition for the location principle of residence in Fung Shui theory. Therefore, the schema of the design was introduced by Fung Shui and Chi of place. To evolve design concept, we reinterpret the Fung Shui and Chi in the site combining with modem landscape design strategy, so that good place making could bring about well-being life of residents. By doing that, design concept of the proposal evolved as follows: 'fullness of comfortable life', 'adaptation of nature', 'inspiration of natural force'. This design approach is critical reevaluation of regional characters employing modem strategy. It is a conscious strategy of critical regionalism as distinguished from the traditional site oriented approach. The following are some of the major features in the design: green network and water recycle system in the site, promenade of forest with the experience nature, link to community core, theme gardens with plants having strong fragrances, terrace gardens with different level of housing type, playgrounds and resting places with many types, human scale facilities for residents.

Typhoon Lusa in 2002 and Typhoon Maemi in 2003 caused the worst damage of landslide and debris flow to Gangwon-do. This damage includes severe damage in riverside road. The damage register indicates that this damage is concentrated on mountain areas in Gangwon-do. In recent years, the studies on GIS application to predicting landslide and debris flow have been progressing actively. Landslide risk map managed by The Forest Service is the representative one. In this study, we generated landslide and debris flow hazard maps using statistical analysis and deterministic analysis in Gangnung area where Typhoons caused severe damage to riverside roads. We built damage point GIS DB from damage registers of National Road Maintenance Agency and field survey, and verified accuracy of landslide and debris flow hazard maps using GIS methods.

Hydrologic soil group is one of the important factors to determine runoff potential and curve number. This study was conducted to classify the hydrologic soil groups of Korean soils by considering saturated hydraulic conductivity and depth of impermeable layer. Saturated hydraulic conductivity of Korean soils was estimated by pedotransfer functions developed in the previous studies. Most of paddy soils were classified as D type due to shallow impermeable layer and low saturated hydraulic conductivity in B soil horizon. For upland and forest, soils classified to A and D types increased compared with former classification method because underestimated permeabilities and overestimated drainages were corrected and rock horizon in shallow depth was regarded as impermeable layer. Soils in mountainous land showed the highest distribution in A type, followed by D type. More than 60 % of soils in mountain foot-slope, fan and valley, alluvial plains, and fluvio-marine deposits were classified to D type because of land use such as paddy and upland.
A leaf blight disease was found on Ailanthus altissiman growing in the Manchon Mountain Park in Daegu city. When isolated, the causal fungus readily formed sex organs, being homothallic. Oogonia were spherical, 19.5-42.9 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter with an average of 29.4$\pm$4.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Antheridia were amphigynous, round to ovoid, and measured 11.3-15.0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ long and 12.5-14.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ wide. Oospores in the oogonia were spherical, 26.1-29.0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter. Sporangia that formed in water were spherical to sub-spherical with a conspicuous papilla and measured 19.5-56.6 ${\times}$ 15.6-44.9 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with an average of 44.0$\pm$8.7${\times}$32.7$\pm$6.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The mean length/breadth (I/b) ratio was 1.35. Papillae were 3.9-11.7 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$l high and 3.9-9.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ wide. Sporangia formed slowly on V8 juice agar medium when cultured under fluorescent light at 12-hour alternation. The sporangia that formed on the agar medium were more spherical and measured 26.5-39.0${\times}$23.4-35.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with an average of 33.6$\pm$3.4${\times}$28.2$\pm$3.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and I/b ratio of 1.19. Disease symptom was repro-duced by artificial inoculation of the healthy plants with the isolate. The causal organism was identified as Phyto-phthora boehmeriae on the basis of its morphological characteristics.
