The New Smart Power Modules for up to 1kW Motor Drive Application

  • This paper introduces a new Motion-$SPM^{TM}$ (Smart Power Modules) module in Single In-line Package (SIP), which is a fully optimized intelligent integrated IGBT inverter module for up to 1kW low power motor drive applications. This module offers a sophisticated, integrated solution and tremendous design flexibility. It also takes advantage of pliability for the arrangement of heat-sink due to two types of lead forms. It comes to be realized by employing non-punch-through (NPT) IGBT with a fast recovery diode and highly integrated building block, which features built-in HVICs and a gate driver that offers more simplicity and compactness leading to reduced costs and high reliability of the entire system. This module also provides technical advantages such as the optimized cost effective thermal performances through IMS (Insulated Metal Substrate), the high latch immunity. This paper provides an overall description of the Motion-$SPM^{TM}$ in SIP as well as actual application issues such as electrical characteristics, thermal performance, circuit configurations and power ratings.

Design of a Closed-Loop Stepping Motor Drive based on Real-Time Ethernet (실시간 이더넷 기반 스테핑 모터 드라이브 개발)

  • This paper proposes the design of a closed-loop stepping motor drive for real-time Ethernet (RTE), which can be easily applied to a variety of RTE protocols. The proposed design is divided into a closed-loop step motor drive which can be reused for various types of RTE protocol and RTE module developed for each specific RTE protocol. It is based on a layered architecture so that the motion control algorithm can be easily reused independently of the RTE protocol and motion profile. To verify the proposed design, closed-loop motor drives based on EtherCAT and Mechatrolink III were developed and their performances were evaluated. Cycle time was measured to verify the real-time communication performance of the developed EtherCAT and Mechatrolink III based motor drive. As a result, the EtherCAT was 7.5 times faster than the Mechatrolink III when 32 motor drives were connected.

  • With the recent progress in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) in industry, increasing attention has been given to Automatic Guided Vehicle (AGV) systems. An AGV is a self-powered unit for transporting materials between stations without needing to be controlled by an operator. Such a system has several sensors to recognize the external state, and it is designed to travel between stations automatically without external assistance. To manage each device automatically in real time it requires a distributed controller with a main computer as the host, as well as a number of micro-controllers. In this study, an AGV system with dual motor drive was constructed. A Pentium 4 personal computer was set up as the main host for the distributed control, and this communicated with other micro-controllers in the management of the motor. The speed of each motor was also controlled by a micro-controller.

  • This paper presents an implementation of compact vector control system for induction motor using a digital signal processor (DSP) and a smart power module (SPM). The DSP TMS320F2812 has most necessary functions for ac motor control in a single chip and SPM provides a compact power stage. The indirect vector control algorithm is implemented in the drive system using these devices. The developed system is applied by 0.8kW induction servo motor and the all functions are verified through the experiments.

  • This paper presents a resonant step-down DC/DC converter to reduce the voltage stresses of a 3-phase inverter module under the three-phase AC utility line condition. Under this condition, a conventional 3-phase inverter module suffers from high voltage stresses as a result of the high rectified DC link voltage; hence, a high-cost high-voltage-rating inverter module must be used. However, using the proposed converter, a low-cost low-voltage-rating inverter module may be adopted to drive the motor even under the 3-phase AC line condition. The proposed converter, which can be realized with small size inductor and low-voltage-rating semiconductor devices, operates at a high-efficiency mode because of the zero-current switching operations of all the semiconductor devices. The operational principles are explained and a design example is provided in the study. Experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed converter.

  • This paper presents a novel 3-phase IGBT module called the SPM (Smart Power Module). This is a new design developed to provide a very compact, low cost, high performance and reliable motor drive system. Several distinct design concepts were used to achieve the highly integrated functionality in a new cost-effective small package.   • The main concepts in the design and construction of an motorized wheelchair for loading in the tar which is intended to drive a disabled to long distance. The wheelchair is basically a powered and folding, so it is designed to motorized manual wheel- chair by modularity method. The wheelchair hrs been installed with a power motor module, battery module, and drive & control module. The goal of this project is to develop a wheelchair that has multifunction and operated disabled who has variety impairment. So we ave currently working. Experimental results of the system approach our purpose, which is improved maneuverability, safety and can be loaded.

  • In this paper a full FPGA-based and compact motor-control system is shown that makes it easy to control the motor and analyze the result data in real time with embedding not only a DC motor controller but also a TFT LCD interface in a single FPGA. Both a PID speed control module for a DC motor and a monitoring module for plotting real time graphs on to a TFT LCD are designed in a single FPGA, and the system validity is shown through simulation and experimental results. The FPGA used is xc3s400 and the entire system is designed by using the AD (Altium Designer). A PWM motor drive system is constructed by using MOSFETs for a DC motor 4-quadrant operations.

  • In this paper, a controller design for brushless linear motor is implemented. The designed controller is mainly composed of current, speed and position controller, which are carried out by the high-speed digital signal processor (DSP). In addition the PWM inverter is controlled by space voltage PWM method. This system is implemented by using 32-bit DSP (TMS320C31), a high-integrated logic device (EPM7192), and IPM (Intelligent Power Module) for compact and powerful system design. The experimental results show the effective performance of controller for the brushless linear motor.
