  • In human walking, muscle co-contraction which produces simultaneous activities of multiple muscles is important in motor control mechanism of the central nervous system. This study aims to understand positive and negative covariation mechanism of inter-muscle activities during walking. In this study, we measured electromyography (EMG) in leg muscles. To identify motor modules, we recored EMG from 4 leg muscles bilaterally (the tibialis anterior, medial gastrocnemius, rectus femoris and medial hamstring muscles) and performed non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) and principa component analysis (PCA). Then, we computed covariation values from various combinations between muscles or motor modules and used two-way repeated measures analysis of variance to identify significantly different covariation patterns between muscle combinations. As the results, we found significant differences between covariation values of muscle combinations (p < 0.05). muscle groups within the same motor modules produced the positive covariations. However, there were strong negative covariation between motor modules. There was negative covariation in all muscle combination. Stable inter-module negative covariation suggests that motor modules may be the control unit in the complex motor coordination.

  • Since my arrival on March 15, 1986 I can only give an overview of several topics which I think might stimulate ideas and questions from the members of this technical organization. These topics will include some thoughts about the Korean automotive industry, future needs regarding manpower and cooperation among manufacturers, the oil industry and the government. Korea is experiencing a tremendous growth not only in the export market but also in domestic sales of motor vehicles. This expansion will require trained manpower in many areas of expertise. This growth in technology and manpower will require a great degree of coordination and cooperation between companies and government to reduce duplication, minimize costs and reduce reliance on foreign technology.

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the differences in the trunk impairment scores according to the levels of the gross motor classification system by evaluating trunk control in children with spastic cerebral palsy using the index of trunk impairment. In addition, the characteristics of trunk control disabilities were investigated according to the cerebral palsy type. METHODS: The subjects were 49 children (mean age 8.57±1.83 years, 11 with hemiplegia, 26 with diplegia, and 12 with quadriplegia) with spastic cerebral palsy levels I to IV under the gross motor function classification system (GMFCS). The coordination and balance of the children with cerebral palsy were evaluated using the index for trunk impairment. Statistical analyses were performed using a Kruskal-Wallis test, and Bonferroni analyses were used as a post-hoc comparison for any significant results. RESULTS: The median of the total scores of trunk impairment was 13 (range, 9-17), which was 56% of the maximum score. The total score of trunk impairment and subscales differed significantly according to the disease severity and type of motor disability. The scores for children with quadriplegia were the lowest compared to children with hemiplegia and diplegia. CONCLUSION: Trunk control function in children with spastic cerebral palsy was reduced, and varied according to the disease severity and types of motor disabilities. The degree of trunk impairment differed from the trunk control ability according to the degree of motor disability of children with cerebral palsy.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of clothing habits wearing cool or warm in daily life on motor ability. A group of ten healthy young females were divided into a cold (C) group and a warm (W) group. From autumn to winter, C group was advised to wear cool clothing, and W group, warm Clothing. The subject's physical fitness were tested in October, initial stage of the clothing training and March of the following year, final stage of the training. The measurements were taken after the subjects rested in a thermoneutral room conditioned at 23$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$ over 1 hour. The test items were weight, skinfold thickness, grip strength (right, left), back-lift strength, vertical jump, sit-ups, Irosmax, side step test, single-foot standing test with eyes closed, and standing trunk flexion. Changes in motor ability of each group between initial stage and final stage of the training were compared. 1. Muscle strength, part of the motor revelation capacity, showed no significant change in the both ,Troops. On the other hand, strength and power showed a decrease in the both groups and C group showed a sharp decrease. 2. Muscular endurance and cardio-pulmonary fitness, part of the motor continuation capacity, were increased after the training and the degree of increase was great in C group. 3. C group showed significant increase in motor coordination capacity including agility, balance, and flexibility after the training, while Wgroup showed significant increases only in balance. 4. Weight and skinfold thickness as a part of the physique showed no significant change.

  • The role of 5-hydroxytryptamine $(5-HT)_1A$ receptor activity in prenatal ischemia was studied, by injecting 8-hydroxy-dipropylaminotetraline (8-OH-DPAT; $50{\mu}g/kg,$ s.c.), a $5-HT_1A$ agonist on gestation day 17, and 30 min later inducing transient ischemia by ligating the uterine vessels for 30 min. On postnatal day 95, rats that had experienced prenatal ischemia showed impaired motor coordination and reduced concentration of 5-HT in the cerebellum compared with Sham-operated controls. In addition, they showed increased $5-HT_1A$ receptor densities in the cerebral cortex. Pretreatment with 8-OH-DPAT ameliorated the behavioral and neurochemical sequelae measured in the present study. The results suggest that $5-HT_1A$ receptors protect the brain from ischemic insult and/or facilitate recovery after prenatally experienced ischemia.
