In order to regulate cutting torque in milling, monitoring system should be set to a certain threshold. Radial immersion ratio is an important factor to determine the threshold and should be estimated in process for automatic regulation. In this paper, on-line estimation of the radial immersion ratio using spindle motor current in face milling is presented. When a tooth finishes sweeping, a sudden drop of cutting torque occurs. This torque drop is equal to the cutting torque acting on a single tooth at the swept angle of cut and can be acquired from cutting torque signals. Average cutting torque per revolution can also be calculated from cutting torque signals. The ratio of cutting torque acting on a single tooth at the swept angle of cut to the average cutting torque per revolution is a function of the swept angle of cut and the number of teeth. Using the magnitude of this ratio, the radial immersion ratio is estimated. Identical algorithm is adopted to estimate the immersion ratio based on the spindle motor current measurement. The experiments performed under different cutting conditions show that the radial immersion ratio can be estimated within 10% error range by the proposed method using spindle motor current. Varying immersion ratio is also estimated well using the presented algorithm.
With the equivalent series circuit analyzed aby revolving field theory and drawn by using the equivalent circuit constant ratios in capacitor motor with windings not in quadrature having space harmonics in its magnetic field (the above ratios are the equivalent circuit constants for the fundamental flux to the magnetizing reactance of the circuit), the equation for the alternating torque with twice line freequency in the motor is directly derived, and the alternating torque is measured with the self-made stator vibration angle amplitude measuring apparatus that is composed of a pickup, filter, photoelectric pickoff etc. The measured values satisfactorily compared with computed values. The properties of the alternating torque characteristics for respective harmonic fluxes and the r5esultant alternating torque characteristic, the effects of the alternating torque characteristics for respective harmonic fluxes on the resultant alternating torque characteristic, the effects of the variation in the motor constants and the equivalent circuit constant ratios for the fundamental flux on the alternating torque characteristics for respective harmonic fluxes and the resultant alternating torque characteristic, are made clear, applying the equation. There exist the optimum values of the motor constants and the equivalent circuit constant ratios for the fundamental flux for decreasing the alternating torque, and the value could be determined in design by the method presented in this paper.

Torque ripple minimization without decrease in average torque is a vital attribute in the design of Synchronous Reluctance (SynRel) motor. As the design of SynRel motor is an arduous task, which encompasses many design variables, this work first analyses the significance of the effect of varying the geometrical parameters on average torque and torque ripple and then proposes an extensive optimization procedure to obtain configurations with improved average torque and minimized torque ripple. A hardware prototype is fabricated and tested. The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software tool used for validating the test results is MagNet 7.6.0.8. Multi Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) is used to determine the various designs meeting the requirements of reduced torque ripple and improved torque performance. The results indicate the efficacy of the proposed methodology and substantiate the utilization of MOPSO as a significant tool for solving design problems related to SynRel motor.
The paper presents a new photovoltaic inverter for stand-alone induction motor application. The proposed system is composed of two stages. First stage is for the photovoltaic dc power feeding and second stage is dedicated to the motor-inverter subsystem and control technique. A direct torque control (DTC) with a novel switching strategy for motor torque ripple minimization is introduced. The novel DTC strategy is based on selecting a suitable voltage vector group for motor torque ripple minimization. A three-level voltage source inverter (VSI) is used instead of a two level inverter because the first has more available vectors and lower ripples in the output current and flux than the second, thus it has lower torque ripples. The photovoltaic array and battery bank are sized and the configuration is indicated based on sun-hour methodology. Simulation results show a comparison between three systems; two level VSI with conventional DTC strategy, three level VSI with conventional DTC, and the proposed system that has a novel DTC switching strategy applied to three level VSI. The results show that the proposed system has lower ripples in the current, flux and torque of the motor.
It is necessary to monitor periodically the operability of safety-related motor-operated valves (MOVs) in nuclear power plants. However, acquiring diagnostic signals for MOVs is very difficult, and doing so requires an excessive amount of time, effort, and expenditure. This paper introduces an accurate and economical method to evaluate the performance of MOVs remotely. The technique to be utilized includes electrical measurements and signal processing to estimate the motor torque and the stem thrust, which have been cited as the two most effective parameters in diagnosing MOVs by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The motor torque is calculated by using electrical signals, which can be measured in the motor control center (MCC). Some advantages of using the motor torque signature over other signatures are examined. The stem thrust is calculated considering the characteristics of the MOV and the estimated motor torque. The basic principle of estimating stem thrust is explained. The developed method is implemented in diagnostic equipment, namely, the Motor Operated Valve Intelligent Diagnostic System (MOVIDS), which is used to obtain the accuracy of and to validate the applicability of the developed method in nuclear power plants. Finally, the accuracy of the developed method is presented and some examples applied to field data are discussed.
This article describes the useful way to measure the torque and RPM of the geared motor. For this, we have made the planetary geared reduction motor including the torque sensor unit which consists of hall effects sensor and permanent magnet. Our monitoring system displays the sensing values (torque, rpm) and the calculated value (power) and it also has the network capability using the Bluetooth protocol. We will show that our solution is much more inexpensive and simple method to measure torque and rpm than before.
Adaptive Maximum Torque Per Amp (Adaptive MTPA) control for induction motor drives seeks to achieve a desired torque with the minimum possible stator current regardless of operating points. This is favorable in terms of inverter operation and nearly optimal in terms of motor efficiency. However, the Adaptive MTPA control was validated only from the viewpoint of tracking a desired torque and was not shown that the desired torque is achieved with minimum possible stator current. This work experimentally demonstrates that optimal condition for Adaptive Maximum Torque Per Amp Control Strategy is achieved regardless of rotor resistance variation.
In this paper, the analysis of a generating torque characteristics of 2-phase induction motor driven with the phase control method is presented. The generating torque equations which represent average torque and pulsating torque are derived from the elementary machine model. The calculating equations which can get the values of average torque and pulsating torque is expressed by the parameters of the equivalent circuit of 2-phase induction motor. According to the calculating equations, these performance characteristics are investigated under various conditions. Finally, a strategy to eliminate non-linearity and pulsating torque generated in driving 2-phase induction motor with the phase control method is presented.
In this paper, the cutting torque of a CNC machine tool during machining is monitored through the internet. To estimate the cutting torque precisely, the spindle driving system is divided into two parts: electrical induction motor part and mechanical part. A magnetized current is calculated from the measured three-phase stator currents and used for the total torque estimation generated by a spindle motor. Slip angular velocity is calculated from the magnetized current directly, which gets rid of the necessity of a spindle speed sensor. Since the frictional torque changes according to the cutting torque and the spindle rotational speed, an experiment is adopted to obtain the frictional torque as a function of the cutting torque and the spindle rotation speed. Then the cutting torque can be calculated by solving a $2^{nd}$ order difference equation at a given cutting condition. A graphical programming method is used to implement the torque monitoring system developed in this study to the computer and at the same time monitor the torque of the spindle motor in real time through the internet. The cutting torque of the CNC lathe is estimated well within an about $3\%$ error range in average in various cutting conditions.
As a main part of an utility helicopter, the APU(Auxiliary Power Unit) has a solenoid valve system operated with a torque motor, which controls the flow rate in the fuel supply system. In this paper, we solved the Maxwell potential equations to analyze the electromagnetic force in the torque motor, and some additional analytic methods are used to compute the quantity of torque produced by the torque motor for the given circuit current. For the convenience, small displacement is assumed, and only magneto-static problem is considered for the two-dimensional cross section. The result will be compared with the three-dimensional analysis that will be studied in the near future.
