Active Mechanical Vibration Control of Rotary Compressors for Air-conditioning Systems

  • Recent power electronics and variable-frequency motor drive technologies have been applied to air conditioners to improve efficiency and power density. However, the mechanical vibrations and acoustic noise resulting from the compressor still remain as a serious problem. This paper presents the development and implementation of an online disturbance state-filter for the suppression of multiple unknown and time-varying vibrations of air conditioning systems. The proposed design has a form of the state-filter based on a Luenburger-style closed-loop speed observer. An active vibration decoupling strategy with an estimated disturbance is provided, which manipulates a motor torque command. Since the proposed estimation does not require any additional transducers or hardware for obtaining real-time information upon disturbances, it is suitable for retrofitting industrial air conditioners.

  • Recently, it is increased to apply sensorless drive for BLDC (Brushless DC) motor to household electrical appliances, especially in the refrigerators and air conditioners, to reduce the cost and the acoustic noise by the operation and to make their functions more comfortable for human beings. In this paper, low-cost sensorless drive for BLDE motor is implemented by random PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). The experimental results show that the electromagnetic noise was reduced and the sound quality was improved by BLDC motor sensorless random PWM Control.

  • Torque ripple control of brushless DC motor has long been the main issue of the servo drive systems in which the speed fluctuation, vibration and acoustic noise need to be minimized. The vast majority of the methods for suppressing the torque ripple require the Fourier series analysis and either the iterative or least mean square minimization. In this paper, a novel approach based on the d-q-0 reference frame that achieves ripple-free torque control with maximum efficiency is presented. The proposed method optimizes the reference phase current waveforms including even the case of 3-phase unbalanced condition, and the motor winding currents are controlled to track the optimized current waveforms by the delta modulation technique. As a results, the proposed approach provides a simple and yet effectine means for obtaining the optimal motor excitation currents. The validity and applicability of the proposed control scheme are verified through simulations and experimental investigations.

  • In this paper, a comparative study on the performance of two-phase and three-phase randomized pulse position PWM scheme for mitigation of audible switching acoustic noise in motor drives Is done. In the randomized pulse position PWM, each of two-phase or three-phase PWM pulses is located randomly in each switching interval. Simulation and experimental efforts were executed to investigate the spread effects of power spectra of inverter output voltage, waveforms of ripple current and audible switching acoustic noise.

Reduction of Audible Switching Acoustic Noise in Motor Drives by a New Two Phase Random Pulse Position PWM Scheme (새로운 2상 랜덤 펄스 위치 PWM기법에 의한 모터 구동 시스템의 가청 스위칭 소음 저감)

  • In this paper, a new two-phase space vector RPWM(Random PWM) is proposed. In the proposed RPWM, each of two-phase PWM pulses is located randomly in each switching interval. Based on the space vector modulation technique, the duty ratio of the pulses is calculated. Along with the randomization of the PWM pulses, we can obtain the effects of spread spectra of inverter output voltage, d.c link current and audible switching acoustic noise as in the case of randomly changed switching frequency. To verify the validity of the proposed two-phase RPWM scheme, the experiment based on the C167 micro-controller was executed. The performance of the proposed scheme was compared with traditional PWM schemes experimentally.

  • RPWM(Random Pulse Width Modulation) is a switching technique to spread the voltage and current harmonics on wide frequency area. Using randomly changed switching frequency of the inverter, the power spectrum of the electromagnetic acoustic noise can be spread into the wide-band area. And the wide-band noise is much more comfortable and less annoying than the narrow-band one. So RPWM have been attracting an interest as an excellent reduction method of acoustic noise on the inverter drive system. In this paper a new RPPWM(Random Position PWM) is proposed and implemented. Each of three pulses is located randomly in each switching intervals. Along with the randomization of PWM pulses, the space vector modulation is processed on the C167 microcontroller also. The experimental results show that the voltage and current harmonics were spread into wide band area and that the audible switching noise was reduced by proposed RPPWM method.

  • The RPWM (Random· Pulse Width Modulation) is a switching technique to spread the voltage and current harmonics over a wide frequency area.   • This paper describes the design of a 2-phase stepping motor driver using CPLD(Complex Programmable Logic Device). The driver IC such as L297 (SGS-Thomson Microelectronics), which is mostly used has some problems in PWM control because of the switching noise of power MOSFETs. It causes current ripple and acoustic noise. To improve theses characteristics, we proposed a new current control method that the output PWM frequency is almost constant using a digital filter. Also we proposed constant current method for 1-2 phase(half step) excitation. The proposed method is implemented with CPLD(Xilinx, XC9572-PC44). Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • In a permanent magnet brushless dc motor, cogging torque is produced by the magnetic attraction between the rotor mounted permanent magnets and the stator teeth. This always produces a pulsating torque ripple resulting in vibration and acoustic noise, which is detrimental to the motor performance. This paper deals with the analytical prediction of cogging torque and the various cogging torque minimization techniques as applied to a permanent magnet brushless dc motor.

  • This paper discusses the development of a 3.5 kW switched reluctance motor (SRM)-based electric air-conditioning (AC) compressor, focusing primarily on the design aspects of the SRM and the integrated controller. In addition to the increased price of rare-earth magnets, SRM's operation capability at high speed and high temperature makes the SRM a viable alternative to the permanent magnet motor for electrically driven automotive air conditioning compressors. A compact and energy efficient scroll compressor is designed and constructed. Two feasible SRM topologies are considered, in terms of efficiency, torque ripple, and acoustic noise. Compact drive electronics are designed and employed to drive the SRM-based compressor. The static and dynamic performance is validated by simulation and experiment.
