  • Wavelet transform decomposes a video frame into a set of subframes with different resolutions corresponding to different frequency bands. The block size of highest layer subframe is too small to estimate correct motion. To decrease this aperture problem in the approximation frame, multiresolution motion estimation (MRME) using hierarchical block matching is presented in this paper. In the multiresolution motion estimation approach, motion vectors in the subframes are estimated by the motion vectors in the approximation frame and are refined at each subframe. It reduces computational time in motion estimation. It is shown that our MRME approach has a superior performance than traditional MRME approaches.

  • In a motion estimation method for use in encoding a moving picture, a full-pixel motion vector is estimated by stochastically sampling a pixel to be processed in a predetermined-sized block of a previous frame or a next frame as a reference frame for each of a plurality of equal-sized blocks in a current frame. Then, a half-pixel motion vector is estimated based on the full-pixel motion vector. Accordingly, both the calculation amount and the calculation time required for the motion estimation are effectively reduced. Further, it can be prevented that the hardware becomes complicated. .

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive search range decision algorithm for motion vector estimation in video coding. The performance of general motion estimation method in video coding mechanism is evaluated with respect to the motion vector accuracy and the complexity, which is trade-off. The proposed algorithm that plays as a role of pre-processing for motion vector estimation determines the motion search range by the local statistics of motion vector of neighboring blocks, resulting in more than 60(%) reduction of the computational cost without the loss of visual quality. Experimental results show the capability of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, a new hierarchical motion estiamtion scheme using the wavelet transformed multi-resolution image layers is proposed. Compared with the full search motion estimation method, the existing hierarchical methods remarkably reduce the amount of the computation but their efficiencies are depreciated by the local minima problem. In order to solve the local minima problem, the multi-resolution image layers are composed using the wavelet transform and the number of layers participated in the motion estimation for a block is determined by considering of its low band energy and higher band energy on the first wavelet transformed layer. The ratio between higher band energy and low band energy of each block is evaluated and in the case of the blocks which include relatively large higher band energy, the motion estimation is carried out in the high resolution layer. Otherwise, all layers are used. The final motion vectors are obtained in the first wavelet transformed layer. So less bits for motion vectors are transmitted, and the decomposition of received image using inverse wavelet transform decreases the blocking effect.

  • Range-based motion estimation of a moving object by using a camera is proposed. Whereas the existing results constrain the motion of an object for the motion estimation of an object, the constraints on the motion is relieved in the proposed method in that a more generally moving object motion can be handled. To this end, a nonlinear observer is designed based on the relative dynamics between the object and camera so that the object velocity and the unknown camera velocity can be estimated. Stability analysis and simulation results for the moving object are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents a simple method of rotational and translational motion estimation for digital image stabilization. The scheme first computes the rotation center by taking least squares of selected local velocity vectors, and the rotational angle is found from special subset of motion vectors. And then translational motion can be estimated by the relation among movement of rotation center, rotation angle and translation movement. To show the effectiveness of our approach, the synthetic images are evaluated, resulting in better performance.

  • This paper proposes new frame rate up-conversion algorithms. Adaptive motion estimation based on block complexity information are used to obtain more accurate motion vectors. Because the information on block complexity is extracted from the motion estimation prediction size from the original frame, additional computational complexity is not imparted. In experimental results, the proposed algorithms provide robust frame interpolation performance for whole test sequences. Also, the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is reduced to a benchmark algorithm.

  • This paper proposed a new fast multi-reference frame motion estimation algorithm. The proposed algorithm reduces search areas of motion estimation using a linear relation of motion vector with distance of each reference frame. New algorithm executes full search area motion estimation in reference frame 0 and reference frame 1. After that, search areas in reference frame 2, reference frame 3 and reference frame 4 are minimized by distance of each reference frame and results of motion estimation in reference frame 0 and reference frame 1. The proposed algorithm does not use a threshold value which is obstacle of hardware implementation and processing time schedule. Also, it reduced computation quantity of multi-reference motion estimation. Hardware implementation of multi-reference frame motion estimation is possible by these features. Simulation results show that PSNR drop and bitrate increase of proposed algorithm are lower than those of previous fast multi-reference frame motion estimation algorithm The number of computation of new algorithm is reduced 52.5% and quality of result is negligible when compared with full search area motion estimation which has 5 reference frames.

  • We propose a highly Integrated motion estimation processor (MEP) for efficient video compression in an SoC platform. When compressing video by the standards like MPEG-4 and H.263, the macroblock related functions motion compensation. mode decision, motion vector prediction, and motion vector difference calculation require the frequent intervention of MCU. Thus the proposed MEP incorporates those functions with the motion estimation capability to reduce the number of interrupts to MCU, which can lead to a highly efficient SoC system. For low-power consumption, the proposed MEP can prevent the temporally static area from motion estimation or can skip the half-pel motion estimation for those macroblocks whose modes are decided as INTRA.

  • In this paper, Enhanced binary block matching method for Constrained one-bit transform (C1BT) based motion estimation is proposed. Binary motion estimation exploits the Number of non-matched points (NNMP) as a block matching criterion instead of the Sum of Absolute Differences (SAD) for low complex motion estimation. The motion estimation using SAD could use the smaller block for more accurate motion estimation. In this paper the enhanced binary block matching method using smaller motion estimation block for C1BT is proposed to the more accurate binary matching. Experimental results shows that the proposed algorithm has better Peak Signal to Noise Ration (PSNR) results compared with conventional binary transform algorithms.
