Evaluation of the Effect of Riser Support System on Global Spar Motion by Time-domain Nonlinear Hull/Mooring/Riser Coupled Analysis

  • The effect of vertical riser support system on the dynamic behaviour of a classical spar platform is investigated. Spar platform generally uses buoyancy-can riser support system, but as water depth gets deeper the alternative riser support system is required due to safety and cost issues. The alternative riser support system is to hang risers off the spar platform using pneumatic cylinders rather than the buoyancy-can. The existing numerical model for hull/mooring/riser coupled dynamics analysis treats riser as an elastic rod truncated at the keel (truncated riser model), thus, in this model, the effect of riser support system can not be modeled correctly. Due to this reason, the truncated riser model tends to overestimate the spar pitch and heave motion. To evaluate more realistic global spar motion, mechanical coupling among risers, guide frames and support cylinders inside of spar moon-pool should be modeled. In the newly developed model, the risers are extended through the moon-pool by using nonlinear finite element methods with realistic boundary condition at multiple guide frames. In the simulation, the vertical tension from pneumatic cylinders is modeled by using ideal-gas equation and the vertical tension from buoyancy-cans is modeled as constant top tension. The different dynamic characteristics between buoyancy-can riser support system and pneumatic riser support system are extensively studied. The alternative riser support system tends to increase spar heave motion and needs damper system to reduce the spar heave motion.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest that the movement expression activity of intellectually disabled people is effective in the learning process of LMA motion recognition based on Kinect sensor. We performed an ICT motion recognition games for intellectually disabled based on movement learning of LMA. The characteristics of the movement through Laban's LMA include the change of time in which movement occurs through the human body that recognizes space and the tension or relaxation of emotion expression. The design and implementation of the motion recognition model will be described, and the possibility of using the proposed motion recognition model is verified through a simple experiment. As a result of the experiment, 24 movement expression activities conducted through 10 learning sessions of 5 participants showed a concordance rate of 53.4% or more of the total average. Learning motion games that appear in response to changes in motion had a good effect on positive learning emotions.   • This paper presents the swing motion analysis of the container crane headblock with the passive control device using hydraulic motors and anti-swing ropes. The device hauls at the headblock to opposite direction of its swing motion using the tension difference between anti-swing ropes connected to the headblock. To consider this control mechanism, the headblock is modelled as the rigid bar suspended by two hoist ropes at the overhead trolley and its non-linear equation of motion is derived using Lagrange's equation. Some numerical experiments using the equation are carried out to investigate the swing motion characteristics of the headblock under the variation of geometric relation among the cargo handling components and to evaluate the performance of the anti-swing device.

Local dynamic buckling of FPSO steel catenary riser by coupled time-domain simulations

  • Steel catenary riser (SCR) is a popular/economical solution for the oil/gas production in deep and ultra-deep water. The behavioral characteristics of SCR have a high correlation with the motion of floating production facility at its survival and operational environments. When large motions of surface floaters occur, such as FPSO in 100-yr storm case, they can cause unacceptable negative tension on SCR near TDZ (touch down zone) and the corresponding elastic deflection can be large due to local dynamic buckling. The generation, propagation, and decay of the elastic wave are also affected by SCR and seabed soil interaction effects. The temporary local dynamic buckling vanishes with the recovery of tension on SCR with the upheaval motion of surface floater. Unlike larger-scale, an-order-of-magnitude longer period global buckling driven by heat and pressure variations in subsea pipelines, the sub-critical local dynamic buckling of SCR is motion-driven and short cycled, which, however, can lead to permanent structural damage when the resulting stress is greatly amplified beyond the elastic limit. The phenomenon is extensively investigated in this paper by using the vessel-mooring-riser coupled dynamic analysis program. It is found that the moment of large downward heave motion at the farthest-horizontal-offset position is the most dangerous for the local dynamic buckling.

Effects of the Flexibility on the Structural Responses of a Tension Leg Platform (인장계류식 해양구조물의 구조응답에 미치는 굽힘강성의 영향)

  • The structural response characteristics of Tension leg platforms(TLPs) in waves are examined for presenting the basic data for structural design of TLPs. The numerical approach is based on a combination of the three dimensional source distribution method and the structural response analysis method, in which the superstructure of TLP is assumed to be flexible instead of rigid. Hydrodynamic and hydrostatic forces on the submerged surface of a TLP have been accurately calculated by excluding the assumption of the slender body theory. The hydrodynamic interactions among TLP members, such as columns and pontoons, and the structural damping are included in structural analysis. The mooring forces are estimated as the sum of pretension of tendons and variational tension due to longitudinal displacements. Stiffness matrices of elastic beam elements connecting nodes are formulated by ordinary method of three dimensional frame analysis. The equation of motion about the whole structure is obtained by the sum of forces and moments acting on each nodes.

  • This paper presents the results of motion tests of a moored semi-submersible platform in regular waves. To investigate the effects of mooring system on the motion characteristics, the tests were performed under the various mooring conditions in regular head and beam waves. Two types of mooring system were employed: one is composed of soft springs and the other is of chains. In the case of chains the pretensions were varied to investigate the dynamic effects of mooring forces as well as the motion responses of the semi-submersible. The motion responses and mooring tensions were measured and analyzed by the double amplitude method. The measured motion responses were also compared with the results of calculation from three-dimensional potential theory. Finally, the dynamic behaviors of mooring chains were studied.

  • An experimental method to investigate the dynamic characteristics of buoys in extreme environmental condition is established. Because the buoy model requires a resonable size for accurate experiment, the test condition in model basin that satisfies the similarity law is hardly compatible with capability of test facilities. It is suggested that the linear wave component that is unable to satisfy similarity is separated with others. The model experiment is carried out with mitigated condition for the linear wave components while others including wave drift, current and wind are keeping the similarities. Then, the result can be extrapolated to give the dynamic behavior of buoys n extreme condition because linear wave component is solely responsibly to oscillatory buoy motion and other environmental components are applied as a initial tension. The similarity for current and wind conditions is viewed as equivalence of restoring forces. The validity of proposed method is examined with different types of standard ocean buoys and it indicates that the linearity of measured characteristics is assured with a limitation of resonable distance between test and estimated wave conditions.

  • The technology development for ocean resources can be represented by the increase of water depth. TLP, Tension Leg Platform, is one of the most feasible systems for deep sea development. TLPs show a complex dynamic behavior resulting from the dynamic interactions among platform, tether system and riser system due to their hydrodynamic and structural dynamic characteristics in waves. This paper aims at the theoretical and experimental analysis on motion response of TLP in waves. It is composed of two parts as follows ;(1) wave and wave loadings (2) TLP motion.

  • In tire presence of incident waves with different frequencies, there are second order sum and difference frequency wave exciting forces due to the nonlinearity of tire incident waves. Although the magnitude of these nonlinear wave forces are small, they act on TLPs at sum and difference frequencies away from those of the incident waves. So, the second order sum and difference frequency waveexciting forces occurring close to tire natural frequencies of TLPs often give greater contributions to high and law frequency resonant responses. Nonlinear motion responses and tension variations in the time domain are analyzed by solving the motion equations with nonlinear wave exciting forces using tire numerical analysismethod. The numerical results of time domain analysis for the nonlinear wave exciting forces on the ISSC TLP in regular waves are compared with the numerical and experimental ones of frequency domain analysis. The results of this comparison confirmed tire validity of the proposed approach.

  • Dynamic analysis of tethers and platforms of tension leg platforms(TLP's) subjected to wave forces is presented in this paper. The efficient platform analysis model which can adequately include the dynamic characteristics of tethers is proposed, and the platform motion analyses are mainly carried out using this model. Also, the tether analyses are performed utilizing the finite element method with geometric stiffnesses due to the pre-tension in tethers. Two different. TLP's located in 1000 ft and 3000 ft waters are chosen as example structures. For the purpose of comparison, analyses are also carried out by two different models. One is the conventional model in which the tethers are idealized as weightless springs. The other is the coupled model of platform and tethers. A comparison has been made between the results obtained by three different models mentioned above. Also, effects of the conventional stiffnesses of tethers and the wave exciting forces acting on tethers for the tether responses are examined.
