  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare EMG activity during horticulture motion and upper limb rehabilitation motion, to confirm whether horticulture motion is suitable for upper extremity rehabilitation of hemiparesis. Design: Three-group cross-sectional design. Methods: The 45 subjects were divided into three groups: hemiparesis (n=15), elderly (n=15) and healthy (n=15). We have recorded EMG signals of six upper limb muscles Upper trapezius (UT), Middle deltoid (MD), Anterior deltoid (AD), Biceps brachii (BB), Triceps brachii (TB), Brachioradialis (BR) during horticultural motions and three upper limb rehabilitative motions. The dependent variables were peak EMG, integral EMG, co-contraction ratio. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare the horticultural motion and rehabilitation motion of the three groups. Results: The peak EMG was significantly different in MD, AD, BB, TB according to the motion(p<0.05), and the UT, BB were significant differences according to the group(p<0.05). The integral EMG was significantly different in MD, AD, BB, TB, BR according to the motion(p<0.05), and the BB were significant differences according to the group(p<0.05). The co-contraction ratio was significantly different in TB/BB according of the motion, and there was no difference between the groups. Conclusions: As a result of this study, horticultural motion alone was insufficient for upper arm rehabilitation, and horticultural motion alone was insufficient to induce continuous activity of the forearm.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate that causes of motion sickness in oriental medicine. Methods The internal and external studies about motion sickness were searched Results and Conclusions The motion sickness is induced by conflict of balance system including vestibular, visual and proprioceptive system. The motion sickness is more common in female and in children between 2 and 12 years old. In western medicine, antihistamine and anticholinergic has been used for treatment of motion sickness, but these anti-motion sickness drug turn out to be not a perfect solution and have several side effects. On the other hands, In oriental medical terminology, there is no words equivalent to the "motion sickness", but we consider the motion sickness as state with dizziness, nausea and vomiting. The motion sickness can be induced by either internal or external causes and the internal causes can thought to be a constitutional factor of an individuals, and the general transportation can be an external cause. The important internal cause is a dysfunction of the spleen, stomch(脾胃不調), retention of phlegm and fluids(痰飮), and deficiency of the kidney jing(腎精不足). The wind(風) and fire(火) in the upper part of the body, especially in the head, also can be an important cause of the motion sickness.

  • The purpose of this study was to use as a basic data to develop suitable nursing intervention program and decide an appropriate intervention time after assessing shoulder range of motion in postmastectomy from 2 weeks to 3 month. 147 patients are chosen as study subject among patients who were in recovery of 2weeks, 1month, 2months and 3 months after surgical operation which is modified radical mastectomy. Data were collected at oncology medicine local and general surgery local in Seoul National University Hospital from May, 2003 to October, 2003. The range of motion of the shoulder(flexion, extension, abduction, internal rotation, external rotation) were examined. Analysis of data that shoulder range of motion average and standard deviation, percentage of the unaffected side and affected side compare with normal shoulder range of motion. Paired t-test was adopted to analyze the difference between affected side and unaffected side. Conclusion from this study is as following, 1. The most serious problem was external rotation (0.56%) and internal rotation is the next (19.9%) in 5 kinds of shoulder range of motion in 2 weeks after surgical operation 2. There was no difference in internal rotation after post operation 3 months but there were differences and shown to recover more than 90% in flexion and abduction. Also shoulder function incresed in flextion less than 80% and more than 80% in external rotation. As this study finding was shown that shoulder range of motion did not get back perfectly except of internal rotation and extension in point of 3 months after breast cancer surgical operation. External rotation was specially shown the lowest result so it is needed to exercise for improving their physical functioning recovery in postmastectomy patients. And it is suggested to study for helping to postmastectomy patients' physical and psycosocial functions with the early rehabilitation program which is based on these results.

  • A theoretical analysis of predicting the detailed motion of a piston-crank mechanism within piston-guide clearance is presented, and the analysis is applied to the piston motion in a gasoline engine. A piston movement program is developed to calculate the piston attitude relative to the bore, the piston to bore impact velocity and kinetic energy loss and the net transverse force acting on the piston. This paper presents the formulation of a set of differential equations governing the transverse and rotational motion of a piston. These equations of motion were solved by well established Runge-Kutta method. As a result of this study, it is possible to predict the effects of piston geometry and piston pin offset on a piston motion and kinetic energy loss.

  • In this paper, possibility of controlling motion of a floating structure using a tuned liquid damper (TLD) is numerically investigated. A TLD is a tank partially filled with liquid. Sloshing phenomena of liquid inside a tank can suppress movement of the tank subject to external excitations at specific frequency. The effects of sloshing phenomena inside a rectangular floating body on its sway motion are investigated by varying excitation frequency. First, a grid-refinement study is carried out to ensure validity of grid independent numerical solutions using present numerical techniques. Then, sway motion of the floating body subjected to wave with five different frequencies are simulated. The normalized amplitudes of sway motion of the target floating body are compared over the frequency, for cases with and without water inside the floating body. It is shown that the motion of the floating body can be minimized by matching the sloshing natural frequency to excitation frequency.
