  • The purpose of this paper is to develop simulations that can be used for virtual education in dentistry. The virtual education to be developed will be developed with clinical training and actual case data of tooth extraction. This development goal is to allow dental students to learn the necessary surgical techniques at the point of their choice, not going into the operating room, away from time, space, and physical limits. I want to develop content using VR. Oculus Rift HMD, Optical Based Outside-in Tracking System, Oculus Touch Motion Controller, and Headset as Input / Output Device. In this configuration, the optimization method is applied convergent, and when the operation of the VR contents is performed, the content data is extracted from the interaction analysis formed in the VR engine, and the data is processed by the content algorithm. It also computes events and dental operations generated within the 3D engine programming and generates corresponding events through data processing according to the input signal. The visualization information is output to the HMD using the rendering information. In addition, the operating room environment was constructed by studying lighting and material for actual operating room environment. We applied the ratio of actual space to virtual space and the ratio between character and actual person to create a spatial composition at a similar rate to actual space.

  • We propose some applications of image processing techniques to extract quantitative measurements by using a camera system developed in Korea university and Catholic Medical School. From now on the system will be called as KCMOTION. The purpose of this study is to provide basic kinematic and kinetic data for the analysis of human movements and to find the clinical usefulness and reliability of the proposed motion analysis system. Two tests, sit-to-stand (STS) movements and pendulum test, are conducted by the system. The aims of the tests are to identify variability and reliability of KCMOTION to give some quantitative comparisons to the other systems. The result of STS movement are compared to the LOCUS IIID motion analyzer by the ratio of maximum flexion movement per body weight to the actual maximum flexion extension torque per body weight. That result in 29 % and 33 % for hip and knee joint, respectively in KCMOTION and 27 % and 30 % in LOCUS IIID System. The results of the pendulum movements are compared to that of using Cybex and Electrogoniometer with relaxation index, amplitude ratio, swing number and swing time. The results of relaxation index and amplitude ratio of the KCMOTION are between those of the Cybex and Electrogoniometer. We also observed that the KCMOTION detect more natural movement, from the results of swing number and time.

  • Metabolic analysis of biological tissues, the interventional radiology in MRT (Magnetic Resonance Treatment) and for clinical diagnoses, representation of 4-Dimensional (4D) structural information (x,y,z,t) of biological tissues is required. This paper discusses image representation techniques for those 4D MR Images. We have proposed an image reconstruction method for ultra-fast 3D MRI. It is based on image interpolation and prediction of un-acquired pictorial data in both of the real and the k-space (the acquisition domain in MRI). A 4D MR image is reconstructed from only two 3D MR images and acquired a few echo signals that are optimized by prediction of the tissue motion. This prediction can be done by the phase of acquired echo signal is proportioned to the tissue motion. On the other hand, reconstructed 4D MR images are represented as a 3D-movie by using computer graphics techniques. Rendered tissue surfaces and/or ROIs are displayed on a CRT monitor. It is represented in an arbitrary plane and/or rendered surface with their motion. As examples of the proposed representation techniques, the finger and the lung motion of healthy volunteers are demonstrated.

  • New features of motion compensation, such as variable block size and multiple reference frames are introduced in H.264/AVC. However, these new features induce significant implementation complexity increases. In this paper, an efficient architecture for spiral-type motion estimation is proposed. First, we propose a hardware-friendly spiral search order. Then, an efficient processing element (PE) architecture for ME is proposed to achieve the proposed search order. The improved PE enables one-pixel-move of the reference pixel data to top, bottom, right, and left by four ports for input and output. Moreover, the parallel calculation architecture to calculate all block size with the SAD of 4x4 is introduced in the proposed architecture. As the result of hardware implementation, the hardware cost is about 145k gates. Maximum clock frequency is 134 MHz in the case of FPGA (Xilinx Vertex5) implementation.

  • Arterial oxygen saturation ($SpO_2$) monitoring for newborns requires special attention in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Newborns have very low photo-plethysmogram (PPG) amplitudes and their body movements are difficult to contain. Hardware design and its associated signal processing algorithms should be robust enough so that faulty measurements can be avoided. In this study, improved designs were implemented to deal with low perfusion, motion artifact, and the influence of ambient light. Dynamic range was increased by using different LED intensities and a feedback system. To minimize the effects of motion artifact and to discard other unqualified data, four additional algorithms were used, which were based on dual-trace detection, continuity of DC level, morphology of PPG, and simultaneity check of $SpO_2$. Our $SpO_2$ system was tested with newborns with normal respiration in the NICU. Our system provided fast, real-time responses and 100% artifact detection was accomplished under 84% of $SpO_2$.

  • Images and Videos that include the human face contain a lot of information. Therefore, accurately extracting human face is a very important issue in the field of computer vision. However, in real life, human faces have various shapes and textures. To adapt to these variations, A model-based approach is one of the best ways in which unknown data can be represented by the model in which it is built. However, the model-based approach has its weaknesses when the motion between two frames is big, it can be either a sudden change of pose or moving with fast speed. In this paper, we propose an enhanced human face-tracking model. This approach included human face detection and motion estimation using Cascaded Convolutional Neural Networks, and continuous human face tracking and modeling correction steps using the Active Appearance Model. A proposed system detects human face in the first input frame and initializes the models. On later frames, Cascaded CNN face detection is used to estimate the target motion such as location or pose before applying the old model and fit new target.
