  • This paper presents a disk-type capacitive sensor for simultaneous measurement of five-dimensional motions of a target. The sensor can be manufactured with a printed circuit board (PCB) such that the sensor can be integrated with its electronics in a single PCB board, whereby the manufacturing costs is considerably reduced. The sensor is optimally designed through an error analysis of possible mechanical errors. Furthermore, the sensor can correct the horizontal motion measurement errors due to the sensor installation tilting error. A proto-type PCB sensor, electronics and a test rig were built, and the effectiveness of the developed sensor was proved through experiments.

  • This paper presents the development of video-based 3-dimensional tracking system. Measurement of human motion is important in the application of ergonomics. The system uses advanced direct video measurement technology. Passive retro-reflecting markers are attached to a subject and movements of markers are observed by two CCD cameras. Infrared light emitted near the CCD cameras is reflected by the markers and is detected by the cameras. The image ae captured by Samsung MVBO2 board and the center of markers is calculated by DSP program. The position of markers are transferred from MVB02 board to the computer through AT bus. The computer then tracks the position of each marker and saves the data. This system has dynamic accuracy with 1% error and the sampling rate to 6-10 Hz, and can analyse the trajectory and speed of the marker. The results of this study can be used for operators motion analysis, task analysis, and hand movement characteristic analysis.

  • This paper presents a Inertial Measuring Unit(IMU) for motion measurement of an AUV. The IMU is composed of three parts: inertial sensors with three servo accelerometers and three rate gyros, an analog/digital interface board, and a signal processing board with TMS320C31 DSP processor. The IMU is a class of strap-down inwetial navigation system does not applicable directly to the navigation system in consequence of the AUV and integrated sensors for an integrated navigation system of the AUV. Fast calculstion of direction cosine matrix for the coordinate transformation body to reference is obtained through the DSP processor. A switching algotrithm is used to lessen the low frequency drift effect of the gyros in the vertical plane with use of low pass filtering of the signal of the accelerometers.

  • In this paper, we propose the non-contact gesture recognition system and algorithm using proximity-based sensors. The system uses four IR receiving photodiode embedded on a single chip and an IR LED for small area. The goal of this paper is to use the proposed algorithm to solve the problem associated with bringing the four IR receivers close to each other and to implement a gesture sensor capable of recognizing eight directional gestures from a distance of 10cm and above. The proposed system was implemented on a FPGA board using Verilog HDL with Android host board. As a result of the implementation, a 2-D swipe gesture of fingers and palms of 3cm and 15cm width was recognized, and a recognition rate of more than 97% was achieved under various conditions. The proposed system is a low-power and non-contact HMI system that recognizes a simple but accurate motion. It can be used as an auxiliary interface to use simple functions such as calls, music, and games for portable devices using batteries.

  • Recent Class requirements and IMO recommendations concerning Hull Strength Monitoring (HSM) have prompted an increasing number of shipowner to adopt monitoring systems on bulk carriers and tanker. Such systems are designed to give warning when stress levels and the frequency and magnitude of ship motions approach levels which require corrective action. When fitted these systems provide enhanced operational safety and efficiency. This paper describes a development beyond the standard BMT HSM system through the integration of stress, motion and radar-based sea state monitoring with powerful, on-board, artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The latter utilises conceptual clustering techniques as an aid to pattern recognition in stress, fatigue. motion and sea state data clusters. This, in turn, provides additional operational guidance for ship's staff. Feedback from applications of the standard BMT HSM and extended HSM systems on board the British Steel Bulk Shipping fleet is described.

  • The purpose of this study were to develop snow-board lower wear with improved functionality. The study consisted of figure out appropriate ease amount of snow-board lower wear and make products by applying it to pattern design. The results of this study were as follows: On the basis of the analysis of snow-board lower wear on market, 2 pieces of experimental snowboard lower wear were designed, produced, and evaluated the patterns of with different ease, and snowboard lower B for experiment was proved to be better. Snowboard lower wear was produced and evaluated for experiment 2 by giving additional ease to specific parts. Therefore experiment 2 was presented pattern, ease, and size of snowboard lower wear with improved functionality. Sizes and ease of snow-board lower wear for presentation. waist circumference - 96.0cm(l6.4cm, 17.1%); hip circumference - 127.0cm(31.3cm, 24.4%); pants length - 112.0cm(9.6cm, 8.6%); crotch length - 90.0cm(26.8cm, 36.4%); thigh circumference - 78.0cm(23.4cm, 30.0%); knee circumference - 62.0cm(24.7cm, 39.8%); turnup circumference - 62.0cm(36.0cm, 58.1%). • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effective skill motion through the kinematic analysis of the Yurchenko Streched motion in new horse vaulting. The subjects in this study were 3 male gymnasts who were ranked as national athletes. After the 3D motion analysis, kinematic variables were analyzed to comparison with the difference between this study and the previous study(Yang, D. Y and Lee, C. S, 1999). As a result, the following conclusions was drawn; 1. In the board contact phase, this study showed a shorten contact time to maintain in condition highly extension of hip and hee angle than the previous study. 2. In the pre-flight phase, this study appeared more shortly flight duration time and horizontal flight displacement than the previous study. 3. In the horse contact phase, the contact duration time and horizontal displacement of COG shortened than the previous study, but appeared to the fast horizontal and vertical velocity and highly extension of shoulder an. 4. In the post-flight phase, a stable horse contact appeared to the increase of the flight duration time and the apex height during the post-flight. And it showed that these results have a stable and good landing.

  • In this paper, a control system of the PUMA 560 robot manipulator using a PC (Personal Computer) is presented. The hardware of the designed control system is composed of IBM-PC/AT, interface board, selection board, interrupt generating circuit, and the servo control unit of the PUMA controller. A robot control library is developed using assembly and C language, and is composed of several low-level functions and arm interface routines, world model routines, arm kinematics routines, and motion command service routines. Using the designed library, joint interpolated motion and Cartesian interpolated motion of the PUMA robot manipulator are realized. In the future, our system is expected to be a very helpful basis and a useful tool for developing various control algorithms of robot manipulator using sensory information.
