Correlation analysis indicated that the child's stress and the mother's child rearing behavior had significant correlation, especially the warmth acceptance behavior of the mother indicated negative high correlation. Also, the child's stress and father's child rearing behavior had significant correlation, especially the rejection restriction behavior of the father indicated positive high correlation. Correlation analysis indicated that the child's stress and the mother's child rearing involvement had significant correlation, especially the family activities involvement of the mother indicated negative high correlation. As well, the child's stress and the father's child rearing involvement had significant correlation, especially the day to day guidance involvement of the father indicated negative high correlation. • Mother-Child Interactions during Problem Solving were analyzed in relation to the child's attachment security and temperament. Subjects were fifty-three 44-to 57-month-old children and their mothers. Attachment security was assessed by Attachment Q set (Waters, 1987); mother-child interactions were observed at home, and maternal ratings of child temperament were collected by questionnaire (Chun 1993). Attachment security scores were positively related to mother's cognitive assistance and positively interactions with the child and to the child's positive affect toward mother. The child's activity perceived by mother was negatively related to mother's efficient interactions and positively to the child's "reliance on mother." The child's behavior toward the mother in the task session and the child's temperament added variance above attachment in accounting for the mother's behavior.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of parenting stress on children's problematic behavior in multicultural families. The subjects were 143 mothers who are caring for their 3-6 year old children in multicultural families. Data was collected using a parenting stress index and a child behavior check list. The data were statistically analyzed using a t-test, a one-way ANOVA(Scheff'e test), a correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. The study showed that there were no significant differences in parenting stress according to the socio-demographic variables. However, there were some significant differences in children's problematic behavior according to the mother's education. Correlation analysis indicated that the mother's parenting stress and children's problematic behavior in multicultural families had significant positive correlations in all sub-variables. It was also found that the mother's education, the mother's stress caused by a difficult child, the mother's stress caused by dysfuntional interactions between parents and children and educational distress, were all significant predictors of the preschool children's problematic behavior in multicultural families.
