  • Digital image recognition has been used for steel bridge surface assessment since late 1990s. However, the non-uniform illumination problems such as shades, shadows, and highlights are still challenges in image processing to date. Therefore, this paper develops a new approach to tackle the non-uniform illumination problem for rust image adjustment. The inhomogeneous illumination problem is divided into shades/shadows and highlights in this paper. The proposed BEMD-morphology approach (BMA) utilizes the bidimensional empirical mode decomposition to mitigate the shade/shadow effect, and the morphological processing to detect and replace the highlight area. Finally, the rust image processed with the BMA will be segmented by the K-Means algorithm, one of the most popular and effective methods, to show the effectiveness of illumination adjustment.

  • Mathematical morphology (MM) has been introduced as a powerful tool for studying the geometrical properties of images, MM is a good approach to digital image processing , which is based on the shape feature. The MM operators such as dilation, erosion, closing and opening have been applied successfully to image noise reduction. The MM filters can easily filter the noise when the noise factors are known. However it is very difficult to reduce the noise when images are ambiguous, because the boundary between the noise and object is vague. In this paper, we propose a new method to reduce noise from ambiguous images by using Fuzzy Mathematical Morphology (FMM) operators. Performance evaluation via simulations show that the FMM filters efficiently reduce the image noise. Furthermore, the FMM filters show a good performance compared with the conventional filters.

  • This paper was undertaken to analyze the morphology of wear debris generated from lubricated moving machine surfaces by image processing. The lubricati, ng wear test was performed under different experimental conditions using the wear test device made in our laboratory and wear test specimen of the pin on disk type wear rubbed in paraffme series base oil, by varying applied load, sliding distance. The four parameters (50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity) to describe the morphology have been developed and outlined in the paper. A system using such techniques promises to obviate the need for subjective, human interpretation of particle morphology in machine condition monitoring, thus to overcome many of the difficulties with current methods and to facilitate wider use of wear particle analysis in machine condition monitoring.

  • In this paper a new approach of digitalized ‘Takbon’ is introduced. By image signal processing, the letters which were written on stones can be deciphered. Epigraphic letter is detected by digital image device, digital camera. The two dimensional digital image is preprocessed because of sensor noise and detective turbulence. Color image is transformed into grey level. The letter image is analyzed in time/frequency domain. By the resultant analysis data decisive functions are calculated. Signal Processing techniques, such as scaling, clipping, digital negative, high/low filter, morphology and so on, provide algorithms that can extract letter from stones.

  • Mathematical morphology skeleton image processing makes many partial skeleton image planes from an original binary image. And the original binary image can be reconstructed without any distortion by summing the first partial skeleton image plane and each dilated partial skeleton image planes using the same structuring element. Especially compression effects of Elias coding to the morphological globally minimal skeleton(GMS) image, is better than that of PCX and Huffman coding. And then this paper proposes mathematical morphological GMS image processing which can be applied to a binary image transmitting for facimile and big size(bigger than $64{\times}64$ size) bitmap fonts storing in a memory.
