  • Eleven individual larvae (3.6-8.0 mm notochord length, NL) were collected from the southern East Sea of Korea in July, 2010, and the adjacent Sea of Jeju Island in August, 2011. Five individuals were identified using mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences (494 base pairs). All were identified as Auxis rochei, their mtCOI sequences being consistent with those of adult A. rochei (d=0.000), followed by Auxis thazard (d=0.027). In terms of morphology, A. rochei larvae showed a preflexion stage of 4.8 mm NL, but a flexion stage between 5.2-6.2 mm NL, and subsequently a postflexion stage between 6.6-8.0 mm NL. During the larval stage, A. rochei differed from A. thazard in having no (or few) melanophores in the lateral caudal region.

  • Comparison of morphological characters and development of eggs and larvae of two bitterlings, Acheilognathus limbata and A. signifer from Korea were observed and discussed taxonomically. A. signifer differs from A. limbata by the color pattern of dorsal and anal fin ray of male, egg form and the length of ovipositor of female. Although two species are overlapping each other in some morphometric characters, there is a great difference between the two in the multivariate analysis of 15 morphological characters of five comparative populations. These results indicate that A. limbata and A. signifer are two independent allopatric sibling species in Korea.

  • A primary objective the Conjoint Building Program(CBP), as articulated in the legislation proceedings as to stimulate renewal and regeneration of old deteriorated districts. By allowing the transfer of development rights between two lots located within 100m radius or the same block surrounded by 12m wide streets, CBP encourages reconstruction of old buildings with low investment value by linking it to another lot that can buy its unused floor area ration. Most of the debates and studies prior to the introduction of the new legislation focused on possible abuse in financial terms, and little research has been done to illustrate possible merits of deficiencies in term of urban morphological influences. This study offers a visual prediction of the various ways CBP can influence an urban block by reshaping and reorganizing it thrown augmented development rights to assess the pros and cons of the current program.

  • PURPOSE: Gene expression and apoptosis in testicular germ cells has been demonstrated in many transgenic animals. However, little is known about the transgenic pig and rates of apoptosis during spermatogenesis. METHODS : Morphological and biochemical features of apoptosis reported in other species were used to confirm that the TdT-mediated dUTP Nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay is an acceptable mothos for idendtification and quantification of apoptotic transgenic germ cells in histological tissue section from transgenic pig testis. • Two penaeoid shrimps, Hadropenaeus lucasii (Bate, 1881) and Sicyonia truncata (Kubo, 1949), were collected from the northeastern waters of Jeju Island, Korea. These represent the only Korean reports of a member of the genus Hadropenaeus, family Solenoceridae and of a member of family Sicyonidae, respectively. Morphological descriptions and illustrations with a color photograph of each species are given. Korean Penaeoidea presently includes 27 species in three families.

  • Currently. people become interested in the development of measuring instrument related to eyesight. In this study, we developed software of electronic part in automatic refracto-keratometer. If an automatic system, which uses images from an optical instrument, can inform the in-spector of an accurate eyesight measured value after the internal process, the frequency of mistakenly observed value will be reduced considerably. This software is using morphological filtering and gray-level signal enhancing techniques. The morphological filtering is the first process, from images of the optical instrument, to transform an original image which is hard to process into manageable one. The second process is a signal enhancing technique to the first processed image using gray -level thresholding technique and is used to reduce an error caused by the variety in distribution of the gray value of image. Therefore, this software system in electronic part will make more effective eyesight measurement by reducing the error effectively when applied to the optical image which is difficult to get accurate measurement value.

  • Background : Plant breeding requires the collection of genetically diverse genetic resources. Studies on the characteristics of Platycodon grandiflorum resources have not been carried out so far. The present study was carried out to discriminate P. grandiflorum based on morphological characteristics and genetic diversity using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Methods and Results :We collected 11 P. grandiflorum cultivars: Maries II, Hakone double white, Hakone double blue, Fuji white, Fuji pink, Fuji blue, Astra white, Astra pink, Astra blue, Astra semi-double blue and Jangbaek. Analyses of the morphological characteristics of the collection were conducted for aerial parts (flower, stem and leaf) and underground parts (root). Next, the genetic diversity of all P. grandiflorum resources was analyzed using SSR markers employing the DNA fragment analysis method. We determined that the 11 P. grandiflorum cultivars analyzed could be classified by plant length, leaf number and root characteristic. Based on the genetic diversity analysis, these cultivars were classified into four distinct groups. Conclusions : These findings could be used for further research on cultivar development using molecular breeding techniques and for conservation of the genetic diversity of P. grandiflorum. Moreover, the markers could be used for genetic mapping of the plant and marker-assisted selection for crop breeding.

  • Eranthis stellata Maxim. is a perennial plant that grows around the valley. E. stellata is concerned about the decline in natural habitats due to climate change in KOREA, continues to be observed and protected as an endangered species (Least Concrned, LC). Nevertheless, studies on the characteristics of the seeds of E. stellata are insufficient. So, this study analyzed the morphological characteristics and dormancy types of seeds. Seeds of E. stellata was collected in April at Gyeongsangbuk-do Arboretum and kept at 5 ℃ until using. To investigate the morphology of seeds, an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used. GA3 treated or untreated seeds (4 replicates of 25 seeds each) were observed germination and embryo growth for 1 month at 5 ℃ and 25/15 ℃ (12h day/12h night). The seed surface of E. stellata, light brown, was observed as a common characteristic of Eranthis genus, reticulate. The short axis of seeds was 1.11~1.77mm (average 1.44mm), and the long axis was 1.27~1.91mm (average 1.63mm), which was investigated in a slightly round shape (subglose). While no germination was observed at all conditions, Embryo growth was observed at 5 ℃ both in the control group and with GA3treated groups. Thus, seeds of E. stellata are classified as morphological physiological dormancy (MDP), which requires embryonic development and dormant break at the same time. These results can be useful information for determining morphological physiological seed dormancy and germination, and will be an important basic data for seed propagation of E. stellata as a resource.

  • Since 2013, more than 100 Entoloma (Entolomataceae, Agaricales) collections have been made during field investigations of mushroom flora in Korea. Among these collections, three Entoloma species were identified as new records from Korea. Morphological examinations were made based on the macro- and micro-morphological features of the isolates collected during field visits. To ensure the identity of the isolates at the species level, DNA sequences from four gene regions (rpb2, ITS, 28S, and mtSSU) were compared. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first records of E. aprile, E. chytrophilum, and E. hirtipes in Korea. Comprehensive descriptions, photographs, and phylogenetic examinations are presented here.

  • This paper proposes and evaluates a new approach to detect ships as targets from Radarslit-l SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) imagery in the vicinity of Korean peninsula. To be more specific, a labeling technique and morphological filtering in conjunction with some other methods are employed to automatically detect the ships. From the test, the ships are revealed to be detected. For ground truth data, information from a radar system is used, which allows assessing accuracy of the approach. The results showed that the proposed approach has the high potential in automatically detecting the ships
