A Study on the Grid Land Subdivision of Ancient Local City in Korea (고대 한국 지방도시 격자형 토지구획의 형태특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to find out the genetic characteristics of gridded subdivision area which has its origin from ancient local administrative city-Sangju, Jeonju, Namwon, Kwangju, Chungju. The spatial structure, based on the inter-relationship among gridded subdivision area, city wall, and topographic condition, and the morphological characteristics of gridded subdivision area are analyzed. The points of analysis on morphological characteristics of gridded subdivision area consist of the size of unit block, the organization system of unit block, the orientation of subdivision line. As a result of the analysis, three main characteristics are found. Firstly there can be found no same land subdivision rule among study areas. Secondly, the morphological features of study area were the products of cumulative process of different subdivision areas which were developed in different periods. Thirdly, the original regular gridded land subdivision seems to have been carried out in the object of a farm-land cultivation around 7th century. And there was a change of land-use from farm land to urban land-use during the later 7th century and 8th century.

  • The purpose of this study is to show how to gain the morphology of the Hybrid Spatial Structures and to get the geometrical data such as node coordinates, member relationships and graphic images. To form spatial structures, we have developed morphological aspects of general spatial structures, programming process and techniques. Structural design has many processes. Especially, it is very important to consider the determination of structural configuration. Regular Hybrid Spatial Structures have complex configuration, so we need to make use of automated computer process to determine structural shape in Hybrid Spatial Structures. We have applied morphological aspects to double layer plate, single layer dome, double layer dome and tensegrity structure.

Taxonomic Characteristics of Six Species of Entomopathogenic Fungi Isolated from the Silkworm, Bombyx mori

  • Six entomopathogenic fungus isolates, Beauveria bassiana J57A, Nomuraea rileyi J125A, Paecilomyces farinosus J3A, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus J50A, Metarhizium anisopliae J88, Aspergilius sp. J64A, causing muscardine disease and aspergillosis in the silkworm, Bombyx mori were investigated for their cultural and morphological characteristics (on PDA culture media within 14 days at $24^{\circ}C$). The results showed that they differ each other from the features of cultural characteristics (colony elevation, colony color, colony growth rate) or morphological characteristics (conidiogenous cell structure, phialides, conidia size and shape). Among cultural characteristics, colony color is the easiest recognizable character between isolates. The morphological characteristics of each fungal isolate correspond to the descriptions of current system of classification.

Morphology and molecular phylogeny of harmful dinoflagellate Pseudocochlodinium profundisulcus from Korean coastal area

  • The morphological features of germling cells were examined to identify an unspecified resting cyst (described as Cochlodinium cf. polykrikoides-like resting cyst) in the Korean coastal area. LSU rRNA gene sequences were also obtained from a strain established from the germling cells. The resting cysts isolated from Korean coastal sediment were characterized as being brown in color, having a large dark-red body, and fibrous lobed ornaments. The germling cells were ellipsoidal with an irregular outline and had an open comma-shaped ASC (apical structure complex), a wide and deep cingulum, and a deep sulcus. These morphological features were consistent with those of previously described harmful dinoflagellate Pseudocochlodinium profundisulcus. The molecular phylogeny revealed that the germling cells and P. profundisulcus were conspecific. Based on these morphological and phylogenetic data, this study documents the occurrence of P. profundisulcus in a Korean coastal area for the first time.

  • Shock waves form in the intergalactic space as an ubiquitous consequence of cosmic structure formation. Using N-body/hydrodynamic simulation data of a ACDM universe, we examined the properties of cosmological shock waves including their morphological distribution. Adopting a diffusive shock acceleration model, we then calculated the amount of cosmic ray energy as well as that of gas thermal energy dissipated at the shocks. Finally, the dynamical consequence of those cosmic rays on cluster properties is discussed.

Morphology, molecular conformation and moisture regain of cocoons of different silkworm varieties

  • Silk has attracted the attention of numerous research groups because of its unique properties as a biomedical material. Recently, studies on the biomedical application of silk cocoon, such as membranes for guided bone regeneration, have been conducted. As a preliminary study on silkworm cocoons, the morphological structure and crystallinity of cocoon of nine silkworm varieties with different sides are examined in this study. The morphological structure of the silkworm cocoon is shown to be dependent on silkworm variety and the cocoon layer (i.e. outside or inside). It is also shown that the silk filaments of the out layer are more bent and twisted compared to those of the inner layer. Furthermore, the crystallinity of the outer surface of all silkworm cocoons is found to be higher than that of the inner surface, regardless of the silkworm variety. Lastly, it is shown that the crystallinity index of the cocoon depends on the silkworm variety, implying that the structure of the cocoon varies with silkworm variety.

  • The fractal dimension is the characteristics that can quantitatively define the irregularity in natural. It is useful in describing the morphology or various rubbed surface for hydraulic piston motor instead of the stylus profiling method. But fractal parameters had not constructed on the morphological characteristic or rubbed surface because of the insufficient knowledge about a conception of fractal dimension. In this study, for the purpose or applying fractal I parameters practically, we have suggested way to establish the morphological characteristic of rubbed surface with fractal parameters, and we carried out an experiment on the lubricant friction and wear by using Ball-ON-Disk type tester. Materials were the brass and the bronze which are used to slipper-pad in the hydraulic piston motor. We searched for fractal parameters or surface structure with the digital image processing, Surface fractal dimension can be determined by sum of intensity difference of surface pixel. Using the image processing and fractal parameters for rubbed surface in the friction and wear test, morphology of rubbed sur race can be effectively obtained by fractal dimensions.

  • A modified Karhunen-Loeve transformation technique using normalization and simultaneous diagonalization of two sample covariance matrices is proposed to separate the object from the background. The transformation technique for the separation of local data structure through maximizing the ratio of sample variances between two classes was identified as a promising one for a preprocessing of multi-variate signal processing algorithms using neighborhood operators including morphological filtering. To relate the separation quality of the proposed technique to a morphological measure, average height was defined by using morphological pattern spectrum. A practical implementation of the transformation technique was tested experimentally and the theoretical results were confirmed.

Morphological and Genetic Variation of Two Populations of Platichthys stellatus (Pleuronectidae, PISCES) from the East Sea (동해 강도다리(Platichthys stellatus) 2개체군의 형태 및 분자변이)

  • Morphological and genetic variation of two populations of Platichthys stellatus were investigated based on 30 individuals each, collected from Uljin (seedling release area) and Pohang (control) in Korea. Morphological analyses demonstrated that the two populations of P. stellatus were well distinguishable in body color of the blind side and fin shape. Mitochondrial DNA control region analysis indicated no significant differences between the two populations ($F_{ST}=-0.00849$, P>0.05). We also analyzed microsatellite DNA loci of the two populations using six markers. Observed heterozygosity ($H_O$) and expected heterozygosity ($H_E$) were 0.550 and 0.592, respectively, in P. stellatus from Uljin, but 0.700 and 0.737 in P. stellatus from Pohang. An index of differentiation in genetic structure revealed significant differences between the two populations ($F_{ST}=0.0208$, P<0.05). Our results suggest that the Uljin population may be comprised of released P. stellatus, whereas the Pohang population may be wild P. stellatus, highlighting the necessity of continuous monitoring of the two populations.

  • The determinant factors of an organism's size during animal development have been explored from various angles but remain partially understood. In Caenorhabditis elegans, many genes affecting cuticle structure, cell growth, and proliferation have been identified to regulate the worm's overall morphology, including body size. While various mutations in those genes directly result in changes in the morphological phenotypes, there is still a need for established, clear, and distinct standards to determine the apparent abnormality in a worm's size and shape. In this study, we measured the body length, body width, terminal bulb length, and head size of mutant worms with reported Dumpy (Dpy), Small (Sma) or Long (Lon) phenotypes by plotting and comparing their respective ratios of various parameters. These results show that the Sma phenotypes are proportionally smaller overall with mild stoutness, and Dpy phenotypes are significantly stouter and have disproportionally small head size. This study provides a standard platform for determining morphological phenotypes designating and annotating mutants that exhibit body shape variations, defining the morphological phenotype of previously unexamined mutants.
