BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Diabetes-specific oral nutritional supplements (ONS) have anti-hyperglycemic effects, while D-allulose exerts anti-diabetic and anti-obesity effects. In this study, we investigated the efficacy and safety of diabetes-specific ONS, including allulose, on glycemic and weight changes in overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). SUBJECTS/METHODS: A single-arm, historical-control pilot clinical trial was conducted on 26 overweight or obese patients with T2DM (age range: 30-70 yrs). The participants were administered 2 packs of diabetes-specific ONS, including allulose (200 kcal/200 mL), every morning for 8 weeks. The glycemic profiles, obesity-related parameters, and lipid profiles were assessed to evaluate the efficacy of ONS. RESULTS: After 8 weeks, fasting blood glucose (FBG) level significantly decreased from 139.00 ± 29.66 mg/dL to 126.08 ± 32.00 mg/dL (P = 0.007) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) improved (7.23 ± 0.82% vs. 7.03 ± 0.69%, P = 0.041). Moreover, the fasting insulin (δ: -1.81 ± 3.61 μU/mL, P = 0.017) and homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (δ: -0.87 ± 1.57, P = 0.009) levels decreased at 8 weeks, and body weight significantly decreased from 67.20 ± 8.29 kg to 66.43 ± 8.12 kg (P = 0.008). Body mass index (BMI) also decreased in accordance with this (from 25.59 ± 1.82 kg/m2 to 25.30 ± 1.86 kg/m2, P = 0.009), as did waist circumference (δ: -1.31 ± 2.04 cm, P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: The consumption of diabetes-specific ONS with allulose in overweight or obese patients with T2DM improved glycemic profiles, such as FBG, HbA1c, and HOMA-IR, and reduced body weight and BMI.
The most realistic way to reduce noise outside the building, such as road traffic noise and aircraft noise, is to strengthen the sound insulation performance at the sound collecting points such as balconies, windows, and exterior walls of each building. However, in light of the reality that shading devices outside buildings are not yet widely used, there are not many studies on sound insulation performance improvement using external windows and window devices such as louvers and blinds. In particular, external blinds can not only block the inflow of strong sunlight in the morning and evening from the outside of the building, but also target the sound insulation effect that blocks the peak noise that occurs during commuting hours. In this study, a study was conducted to improve sound insulation performance against external noise by using an external electric blind (EEB), which is one of the most efficient window and door external shading devices. Various sound insulation performance tests were conducted while changing the configuration of external electric blinds developed for light blocking purposes. Through this, it was verified that an additional sound insulation performance of 6 dB can be obtained by installing an external electric blind compared to the reduction performance of general windows.

Lane management with a central variable lane(s) (or reversible lane) where the traffic flow is temporarily reversed in one or more lanes during peak periods has been evaluated as an effective strategy to alleviate congestion caused by tidal traffic flows. However, due to traffic safety issues, such a movable barrier system can be considered as an alternative to supplement the existing its operation facilities such as static and/or dynamic signs and special pavement markings. In addition, when combined with a bus exclusive lane strategy, its effectiveness could be greatly increased. The objective of this study is to propose a feasibility analysis procedure for operational strategies of a bus-exclusive lanes using a barrier transfer system (BTS) for urban expressways. To this end, a case study was conducted on two urban expressways on the west side of the Han River in Seoul. As a result, temporary operation during rush hour in the morning was found to be most effective. The results presented in this study are expected to serve as a basis for establishing bus-exclusive lane operation strategies using similar systems in the future.
The purpose of this study was to compare the awareness of dietary patterns and health of full-time and employed housewives. The investigation gathered information on general characteristics, dietary lifestyle, nutritional status, and health by questionnaire as well as anthropometric measurements. The subjects included housewives living in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province (86 full-time and 127 working housewives) during November 2009 to January 2010. The average age, height, and weight of the housewives were $45.8{\pm}7.6\;yr$, $161.0{\pm}8.4\;cm$, and $55.7{\pm}6.3\;kg$, respectively. The average monthly income of the households was 3 million to 5 million won (31.4% full-time and 37.0% working housewives), and their average food expense was 200,000 to 500,000 won (46.5% full-time and 48.1% working housewives). More than 90% of the studied homes were nuclear families and the most common number of children was 2 to 3 (79.1% full-time and 76.4% working housewives). The ratio of employed housewives who ate regular meals was 35.4%, but that of the full-time housewives was 48.2% (p<0.05). Of the working housewives, 7.1% never ate breakfast and the primary reason for skipping breakfast was 'busy in the morning' (61.1%). The type of food that the housewives preferred when eating out was Korean food, both for the full-time and employed housewives (76.0%). All the housewives overate calories and the full-time housewives ate more protein, fat, vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B6, niacin, vitamin C, vitamin E, folic acid, and cholesterol than the employed housewives (p<0.05). Both the full-time and employed housewives were more satisfied with supper than with other meals. About 30.6% of the full-time and 33.9% of the working housewives had no interest in health, but answered that regular exercise was very important for health (33.3% full-time and 39.7% working housewives). In conclusion, working housewives have poor dietary habits and nutrient intakes, thus substantial measures to improve these problems are urgently needed.
The Nishinoshima volcano, located 940 km south of Tokyo, experienced an eruption from June to August 2020. The volcanic gas and ash from the eruption of Nishinoshima that occurred at the end of July 2020 was reported to have the potential to affect the Korean Peninsula. In this study, we used Ash3D, a numerical simulation program for volcanic ash dispersion, to investigate the eruption that occurred at 0:00 local time on July 28, 2020, with a volcanic explosivity index of three. The results showed that the volcanic ash cloud reached Okinawa on the morning of July 30, carried by an east wind. It then moved northward and reached Jeju Island on August 1, eventually circulating in a clockwise direction and reaching southern part of the Korean Peninsula on August 2. The concentration of Particulate Matter 10 (PM10), measured at the Jeju Gosan Meteorological Observatory in Jeju Island, increase from August 1. A similar increase in PM10 concentration was observed at the Gudeok Mountain Weather Station in Busan from August 2. These findings suggested that eruption of the Nishinoshima volcano had an impact on the fine dust concentrations at Jeju Island and southern part of the Korean Peninsula.
Ddareungi, a public bicycle service in Seoul, establishes itself as a means of daily transportation for citizens in Seoul. We speculated that the pattern of using Ddareungi may have changed since COVID-19. This study explores changes in using Ddareungi after COVID-19 with descriptive statistical analysis and network analysis. The analysis results are summarized as follows. The average traveling distance and average traveling speed have decreased over the entire time in a day since COVID-19. The round trip rate has increased at dawn and morning and has decreased in the evening and night. The average weighted degree and average clustering coefficient have decreased, and the modularity has increased. The clusters, located north of the Han River in Seoul, had a similar geographic distribution before and after COVID-19. However, the clusters, located south of the Han River, had different geographic distributions after COVID-19. Traveling routes added to the top 5 traffic rankings after COVID-19 had an average traveling distance of fewer than 1,000 meters. We expect that the results of this study will help improve the public bicycle service in Seoul.
The purpose of this study was to survey the current status of bread menus at school, business and industry (B & I), and military foodservice operations and to analyze dietitians' perceptions of applying rice bread in foodservice menus. A questionnaire, which was developed by content analysis, situation analysis, and in-depth interview, was distributed to 183 schools, 31 B & I operations, and 26 air force dietitians. In the school and B & I foodservices, wheat bread was used much more than rice bread and serving frequencies of morning rolls and sliced bread were higher. The military foodservices, however, served much more rice bread as burger buns than the other groups. For the school and B&I operations, consumer preference for wheat bread was perceived as high. In contrast, soldiers preferred rice bread to wheat bread in the military foodservices. The recognized advantages of using rice bread were different among the three groups. The military dietitians perceived the main advantage of using rice bread as an increase of rice consumption, while the school and B & I dietitians viewed it as promoting a healthy image. In all groups, the primary difficulties for using rice bread were the higher cost of rice bread as compared to wheat bread and a lack of facilities (e.g. oven). The military dietitians had the highest levels of positive and active interest as well as intention and opinions toward using rice bread. On the other hand, the school and B & I dietitians had very positive perceptions of rice bread but did not actually apply it in their foodservice menus. Overall, the results of this study suggest that the development of diverse menus using rice bread along with government support of its use, including facilities with ovens as well as rice bread subsidies, should be carried out for on-going expansion of the rice bread supply.

Urban land surface temperature (LST) change is a major environmental factor that affects the thermal comfort, energy consumption, and health of urban residents. Most studies that explored the relationship between LST and urban built-environment form analyzed only midday LST. This study explores the diurnal variation of summertime LST in Seoul using ECOSTRESS data, which observes LST at various times of the day and analyzes whether the LST variation differs by built environment type. Launched in 2018, ECOSTRESS operates in a non-sun-synchronous orbit, observing LST with a high resolution of 70 meters. This study collected data from early morning (6:25) to evening (17:26) from 2019 to 2022 to build time-series LST. Based on greenery, water bodies, and building form data, eight types of Seoul's built environment were derived by hierarchical clustering, and the LST fluctuation characteristics of each cluster were compared. The results showed that the spatial disparity in LST increased after dawn, peaked at noon, and decreased again, highlighting areas with rapid versus stable LST changes. Low-rise and high-rise compact districts experienced fast, high temperature increases and high variability, while low-density apartments experienced moderate LST increases and low variability. These results suggest urban forms that can mitigate rapid daytime heating.

This study aimed to analyze changes in temperature and humidity based on the presence of roadside trees (tree, tree + shrub) and their arrangement (single row, double row), and calculate the discomfort index to evaluate the thermal environment. For this, three temperature and humidity observation campaigns were conducted from June to September 2023 in Dalseo-gu and Jung-gu, Daegu. Results from the observation in Dalseo-gu showed that temperature and humidity were inversely related. During the day, areas with roadside trees consistently exhibited lower temperatures than those without trees. This pattern was evident in all observation campaigns. In particular, the temperature difference between the areas increased during peak heat hours (15:00-16:00). Specifically, the average temperatures were lowest in areas with tree + shrub planting, followed by tree-only areas, and highest in areas without trees, showing statistically significant differences. The highest temperatures were observed at night and early morning in areas with trees or tree + shrub planting. Conversely, when calculating the discomfort index, areas with trees and shrubs showed the most favorable thermal comfort. In Jung-gu, nearly all observations indicated that areas with double-row tree-planting had significantly lower temperatures than areas with single-row tree-planting. The discomfort index was also found to be more positive in second-row tree planting areas compared to first-row tree planting areas. By quantitatively analyzing the cooling effect of urban roadside trees and the improvement in thermal comfort, this study provides empirical evidence that can be used to support urban forest projects and related policy implementations.

Tomatoes in greenhouse are a widely cultivated horticultural crop worldwide, accounting for high production and production value. When greenhouse ventilation is minimized during low temperature periods, CO2 enrichment is often used to increase tomato photosynthetic rate and yield. Plant-induced electrical signal (PIES) can be used as a technology to monitor changes in the biological response of crops due to environmental changes by using the principle of measuring the resistance value, or impedance, within the crop. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between tomato growth data, vital response, and PIES resulting from CO2 enrichment in greenhouse tomatoes. The growth of tomato treated with CO2 enrichment in the morning was significantly better in all items except stem diameter compared to the control, and PIES values were also higher. The growth of tomato continuously applied with CO2 was better in the treatment groups than control, and there was no significant difference in chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthesis. However, PIES and SPAD values were higher in the CO2 treatment group than control. CO2 enrichment have a direct relationship with PIES, growth increased, and transpiration increased due to the increased leaf area, resulting in increased water absorption, which appears to be reflected in PIES, which measures vascular impedance. Through this, this study suggests that PIES can be used to monitor crops due to environmental changes, and that PIES is a useful method for non-destructively and continuously monitoring changes of crops.
