  • In the study, the moral sensitivity, moral distress, and biomedical ethics awareness levels of hospital nurses are examined, and the mediating effect of biomedical ethics awareness in the relationship between moral sensitivity and moral distress is verified. As the study subjects, 153 hospital nurses were selected from both university hospitals and general hospitals in S city and J city. Using the SPSS WIN 21.0 system, data analysis was conducted via t-tests, the Sheffe test, correlation analysis, multiple regression analyses, Sobel test. The average level of moral sensitivity experienced by the hospital nurses was 4.70(out of 7), moral distress was 62.80(out of 336), and biomedical ethics awareness was 2.21(out of 4). Moral distress had a static correlation with moral sensitivity and biochemical ethics awareness, and moral sensitivity had a static correlation with biomedical ethics awareness. Finally, biomedical ethics awareness showed a partial mediating effect in the relationship between moral sensitivity and moral distress. It is important to develop a biomedical ethics education program that can help hospital nurses to resolve moral issues, thereby improving moral sensitivity and diminishing their moral distress.

  • This study was attempted to suggest future directions for nursing ethics education by analyzing research trends related to ethical conflicts among nurses and the current status of nursing ethics education. In four domestic databases, it was searched as a combination of words 'nurse', 'ethics', 'moral', 'bioethics', 'conflict', 'sensitivity', 'dilemma', 'issue', and 'value'. As a result, 591 papers were confirmed from 2000 to December 2021, of which 111 papers were finally analyzed. The status of nursing ethics education was analyzed for 184 out of 203 schools that operated a four-year bachelor's degree program registered with the Korean Accreditation Board of Nursing Education. As a result of the study, the number of studies related to ethical conflicts among nurses steadily increasing, and quantitative studies on nurses in general hospitals were the most common. The main keywords were identified as moral sensitivity, moral agony, ethical dilemma, and biomedical ethics awareness. Nursing ethics education was operated by 68% of universities as a major subject, and more than half of universities opened it in the first and second grades with one or two credits. As a result of this study, ethical conflicts experienced by nurses are increasing according to social change. Therefore, it is necessary for universities to further expand the proportion of nursing ethics education and to establish an educational model for each grade level for the continuity of the educational effect.

Between Individual and Organization: Reinterpreting the Challenger Disaster and Finding an Interface between STS and Engineering Ethics (개인과 조직 사이에서: 챌린저호 폭발사고에 대한 재해석과 STS-공학윤리의 접점 찾기)

  • On the grounds of Diane Vaughan's pioneering study into the Challenger Disaster, STS(Science and Technology Studies) scholars have recently argued that most engineers seldom face an ethical situation, in which the boundary between the ethical and the unethical is absolutely clear, and for which a serious moral decision such as "whistle blowing" is urgently needed. They have instead suggested that engineering ethics needs to address engineers' everyday routine practices, which, if accumulated, may have some impact upon the overall performance of the technological system. However, such studies have not completely resolved the tension between STS that emphasizes contextual elements in which the everyday practice of engineers are done, on the one hand, and engineering ethics that stresses individual engineer's moral decision of an existential kind, on the other. By discussing various works on the Challenger Disaster and related issues over technological risks, this paper attempts to establish an interface between STS and engineering ethics, and proposes some practical implications for the effective education of engineering ethics to engineering students.

  • 'Self-awareness' has its core on exactly understanding of your own desire, emotion, value, etc. and then keeping your sense of confidence etc. 'Self-management' has its core on controlling your emotion to overcome stress; suppressing your urge; setting your personal or academic goals and then managing your effort for such goals. This study is to answer the question, "How can we efficiently improve our righteous and good character in the elementary school students?", which is one of the core goals of elementary education. Considering the cultural base of Korea that has the tradition of Confucianism based moral education, Confucian idea that has been verified and accumulated for a long time also shows clearly its own useful value in contemporary moral education. The effort to reorganize such Confucian idea into a character education program and reflect it positively in education, therefore, will be meaningful. Wigijihak (爲己之學: study for yourself) that goes for completeness of moral self, Jungyongjido (中庸之道: positioned in a good balance) that goes for an even life without 'too much and too little' and Hoyeonjigi (浩然之氣: big heart) that encourages moral activeness will contribute largely to realization of 'education for whole person'.

  • This study was a descriptive study to investigate the influence of moral self-concept and ethical values on attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment among nursing students. The study subjects were 296 nursing students from 2 nursing colleges in G city. The data were collected from June 12 to June 23, 2017 and analyzed using the SPSS 23.0 program. The mean score of the moral self-concept was 3.48±0.33, of ethical values was 3.50±0.37 and of attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment was 3.13±0.43. In attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, there were significant differences in grade(F=3.21, p=.024), practice(t=2.06, p=.040) and nursing ethics education(t=2.98, p=.003). There was a significant negative correlation between attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment and moral self-concept(r=-.14, p=.017) and ethical values(r=-.42, p<.001). The significant predictors that influence the attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment were ethical values and nursing ethics education. The explanatory power was 22.5%. Based on the above results, additional studies to determine the various factors affecting attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment of nursing students should be conducted and systematic education programs need to be developed to foster utilitarian values in order to form a positive attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment.

  • The purpose of this research was to develop a typology of fair-trade apparel consumers and present a clear overview of the influence of product knowledge on consumer behaviors. A two-step cluster analysis was used to classify respondents into sub-groups based on their level of self-perceived knowledge and purchase experience. In addition, ANOVA was used to test the predictive validity of the cluster solution. Income was the only demographic variable that significantly differed across groups. The more familiar and more experienced group had higher income than the other groups. Psychographic data showed that attitudes and moral norms varied across groups. The more familiar and more experienced group had more positive attitudes and higher level of moral norms than the less familiar and less experienced group. In terms of behavioristic data, groups differed significantly in purchase intentions and willingness to pay more for fair-trade apparel. That is, the more familiar and more experienced group was willing to pay more and had higher purchase intentions than the less familiar and less experienced group. Overall, the level of product knowledge and purchase experience were considerably low. This study thus confirmed the need to increase consumers' familiarity related to fair-trade apparel products.
