Montmorillonite K-10 Clay as an Efficient Reusable Heterogeneous Catalyst for the Solvent-Free Microwave Mediated Synthesis of 5-Substituted 1H-Tetrazoles

  • Various 5-substituted 1H-tetrazole derivatives were synthesized in a simple and environmentally benign method from the reaction of aryl and benzyl nitriles with sodium azide in solvent-free media using montmorillonite K-10 clay as solid recyclable heterogeneous acidic catalyst and microwave irradiation in good yields and short reaction times.

  • Color impurity in industrial effluents pose a significant risk to human health and the environment, so much effort has been expended to degrade them using various methods, including the use of clay minerals as adsorbent. The purpose of this study was to advance understanding of the mechanisms for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions onto montmorillonite as an adsorbent. Preliminary experiments showed that montmorillonite was effective for this purpose and adsorption equilibrium could be reached in about 24 h. Adsorption capacity of the clay decreased with increase in temperature and ionic strength, and increased with in pH. The fitness of equilibrium data to common isotherm equations such as the Langmuir, Freundlich, Elovich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich were tested. The Langmuir equation fitted to equilibrium data better than all tested isotherm models. Thermodynamic activation parameters such as ${\Delta}G^0$, ${\Delta}S^0$ and ${\Delta}H^0$ were also calculated and results were evaluated. As result montmorillonite clay was found as effective low cost adsorbent for removal of cationic dyes from waste waters.

  • 스테아릴트리메틸암모늄 이온만 삽입된 몬모릴로나이트는 나노복합재료를 형성하지 못하였다. 그러나 스테아릴트리메틸암모늄과 m-페닐렌디암모늄 염이 함께 삽입된 몬모릴로나이트와 diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A(DGEBA)와 가열하면 중합반응이 일어나 폴리에테르-몬모릴로나이트의 나노복합재료를 합성하였다. 합성한 나노복합재료를 XRD과 TEM을 통하여 에폭시 메트릭스내의 몬모릴로나이트의 실리케이트층이 한층 균일하게 분산되어 있음을 확인하였다. 그리고 각각의 실리케이트 층간거리는 $250{\sim}500{\AA}$ 정도였다.

Chemical Bonding Nature and Mesoporous Structure of Nickel Intercalated Montmorillonite Clay

  • Mesoporous nickel intercalated aluminosilicate nanohybrid has been synthesized through a recombination reaction between the colloidal suspension of exfoliated montmorillonite nanosheets and aqueous nickel acetate solution. According to powder X-ray diffraction and field emission-scanning electron microscopic analyses, the intercalation of nickel species expands significantly the basal spacing of the host montmorillonite clay and the crystallites of the intercalation compound are assembled to form a house-of-card structure. $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherm measurements with BJH pore analyses clearly demonstrated that the porosity of the intercalate originates mainly from mesopores (diameter $\sim50\;\AA$) formed by the house-of-card type stacking of clay crystallites. From FT-IR and X-ray absorption spectroscopic analyses, it becomes certain that intercalated nickel ion is stabilized in an isolated $NiO_6$ octahedral unit. The present mesoporous intercalation compound is expected to be applicable as efficient catalysts or absorbents.

The Effect of Clay Concentration on Mechanical and Water Barrier Properties of Chitosan-Based Nanocomposite Films

  • Chitosan-based nanocomposite films were prepared using a solution intercalation method incorporating varying amounts of organically modified montmorillonite (Cloisite 30B) from 0 to 30 wt%. The nanocomposite films prepared were optically clear despite a slight decrease in the transmittance due to the spatial distribution of nanoclay. X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that a certain degree of intercalation or exfoliation formed when the amount of clay in the film was low and that microscale tactoids formed when the clay content in the sample was high (more than 10 wt%). The tensile strength (TS) of the chitosan film increased when the clay was incorporated up to 10 wt% and then decreased with further increases in the clay content of the film. The elongation at break (E) increased slightly upon the addition of low levels of clay up to 5 wt% and then decreased with further increases in the amount of the clay in the film. The water vapor permeability (WVP) decreased exponentially with increasing clay content. The water solubility (WS) and swelling ratio (SR) of the nanocomposite films decreased slightly, indicating that the water resistance of the chitosan film increased due to the incorporation of the nanoclay.

점토광물을 이용한 산소환원의 전기화학적 촉매성에 관한 연구 (The Electrocatalytic Reduction of Molecular Oxygen with Clay Modified Electrodes)

  • 몇 가지 점토광물과 메틸바이올로젠 또는 메틸렌블루를 함유시킨 점토수식전극을 이용하여 산소환원에 대한 전기화학적 촉매성을 검토하였다. 점토광물로는 Na-몬모릴로나이트, Ca-몬모릴로나이트, 카오리나이트를 사용하였다. 점토수식전극은 유리탄소전극 표면에 점토 현탁액을 입히고 메틸바이올로젠을 흡착시킨 것을 사용하였으며, 전기화학적 산소환원의 정도는 순환 전압전류법(cyclic voltammetry)으로 측정하였다. 실험결과, 다른 점토시료에 비하여 Na-몬모릴로나이트가 메틸바이올로젠의 흡착효과가 가장 크게 나타났고, 메틸바이올로젠을 흡착시킨 점토수식전극이 산소환원에 대한 촉매성이 월등히 우수하였다. 즉 촉매산소환원 피크가 242.6 mV 만큼 +방향으로 이동하였다. 메틸바이올로젠을 흡착시킨 점토수식전극이 메틸렌블루를 흡착시킨 점토수식전극보다 산소환원에 대한 촉매성이 더 높게 나타났다. Ca-몬모릴로나이트의 경우는 변화가 없었으나 Na-몬모릴로나이트의 구조는 메틸바이올로젠의 흡착으로 변화되었다. 메틸바이올로젠- Na-몬모릴로나이트 점토수식전극은 현탁액의 점토 농도가 약 0.87 g/10 mL이고. 메틸바이올로젠의 수용액의 농도가 대략 2.5 mM일 때 산소환원 촉매 효과가 가장 탁월하였다. 지지전해질의 pH에 따른 점토수식 전극의 산소 환원 촉매성은 중성의 pH 범위(6.3과 8.3)에서보다 산성인 pH 3.7과 알칼리성인 pH 12.7에서 월등히 크게 나타났다.

유화중합을 이용한 PMMA/Clay 나노컴포지트의 제조 (Synthesis of PMMA/Clay Nanocomposite via Emulsion Polymerization)

  • Poly(methyl methacrylate)/clay nanocomposite particles with particle size of 275${\sim}$292 nm range were successfully prepared using emulsion polymerization. The content of montmorillonite based on the methyl methacrylate monomer was chosen as 30 wt.%. 2,2-azobis(isobuthylamidine hydrochloride) and n-dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride were used as an initiator and a surfactant in cationic emulsion system. Potassium persulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate were used as an initiator and a surfactant in anionic emulsion system. The evidence of intercalated /exfoliated structure of montmorillonite in the nanocomposite prepared in our experiment was confirmed by wide angle x-ray diffraction patterns of $d_{001}$ plane. Thermal behavior of nanocomposite was traced using DSC and TGA. It was found that the nanocomposite particle prepared by cationic emulsion system showed intercalated structured. We also found that the nanocomposite particle obtained from anionic emulsion system resulted in the fully exfoliated structure.

Hg(0) Removal Using Se(0)-doped Montmorillonite from Selenite(IV)

  • Potassium methylselenite ($KSeO_2(OCH_3)$) was reduced to elemental selenium, Se(0), and then doped onto montmorillonite K 10 (MK10) clay to examine the interaction between elemental mercury (Hg(0)) vapor and Se(0) in an effort to understand the possible heterogeneous reaction of Hg(0) vapor and Se(0) solid. The clay was used as a cost-effective support material for uniform dispersion of Se(0). The Se(0)-doped MK10 showed an excellent reaction performance with Hg(0) under an inert nitrogen gas at 70 and $140^{\circ}C$ in our lab-scale fixed-bed system. However, the precursor, $KSeO_2(OCH_3)$-doped MK10 showed a negligible reaction performance with Hg(0), suggesting that the oxidation state of selenium plays a key role in the reaction of Hg(0) vapor and selenium compounds.

반응성 유기화 점토를 이용한 내충격성 폴리스티렌 나노복합재료의 합성 및 물성 (Synthesis and Properties of High Impact Polystyrene Nanocomposites Based upon Organoclay Having Reactive Group)

  • 직접 중합법으로 내충격성 폴리스티렌(HIPS)과 유기화 점토로 구성된 나노복합재료를 합성하여 점토 첨가에 따른 물성을 조사하였다. 반응성 작용기를 갖는 유기화 점토인 vinylbenzyltrimethyl clay(VBC)와 octadecylvinylbenzyldimethyl clay(ODVC)를 sodium montmorillonite와 계면활성제인 vinylbenzyltrimethyl ammonium chloride(VBTMAC)와 octadecylyinylbenzdimethyl ammonium bromide(ODVBDAB)의 이온교환으로 각각 제조하였고 상용화된 유기화 점토인 $Cloisite^{(R)}$ 10A(C10A)를 비교를 위해 사용하였다. ODVD로 제조한 나노복합재료의 경우 X-선 회절(XRD) 피크가 사라진 것으로 보아 실리케이트 층이 박리된 것을 알 수 있었고, C10A로 제조한 나노복합재료의 경우 XRD 피크의 각도가 작은 쪽으로 이동하는 것으로 보아 실리케이트 층에 고분자 사슬이 층간 삽입된 것을 알 수 있었다. 저장탄성률과 복소점도로 나타낸 유변물성은 유기화 점토의 함량이 증가할수록 증가하였다.
