  • Aircraft radar has special function which is ranging from aircraft to ground of antenna boresight. Because ranging information is used to calibrate altitude of aircraft or to drop a conventional bomb, the measuring have to be precise and robust. Therefore, we propose a simple and efficient method using monopulse radar for ground ranging. Proposed method calculates balancing weight according to linearity of monopulse ratio and mixes two ranging measurements in proportional to the weight. By exploiting balancing weight, radar is able to react to various environment as monopulse ratio contains characteristics of clutter environment. As a result, robust ranging information can be achieved. We use DEM(Digital Elevation Model) in order to simulate heterogeneous environment. In experimental result, it is shown that proposed method shows better accuracy and precision in any environment.

  • A monopulse feeder gives the most important impact upon the radiation pattern characteristics of a multi-function radar or a tracking radar which uses the space feed. It is described that the triple-mode type monopulse feeder which possesses the optimum aperture illumination for three monopulse channels is designed and measured in this paper. The measured results show that the designed feeder has not only the characteristics of the optimum aperture illimination in each channel and also very low return loss over the 10 % of fractional bandwidth at X-band. This means that the feeder provides the antenna system with low sidelobe level and high monopulse slope characteristics.

  • In this paper, we propose the calibration method of monopulse slope to minimize the variation of angle estimate in frequency agile noncoherent monopulse system. We analyze the monopulse slope characteristics of antenna and RF receiver including the phase and gain imbalances of each receiving channel and present the calibration method to minimize the phase and gain imbalances of RF receiver channels including antenna. In addition, we present the calibration method using channel switching to minimize the gain imbalance of IF receiver channels. The measured average monopulse slope within the frequency bandwidth is -0.96, the maximum variation of angle estimate is similar to theoretical value, $0.15^{\circ}$ at ${\pm}2^{\circ}$ azimuth and $0.03^{\circ}$ at $0^{\circ}$ azimuth.

  • The performance of a monopulse estimator is depend on its monopulse ratio(MR) curve. To improve its performance, a mathematical expression of the MR curve that is associated with an array the parameters is needed. In this paper, we present a novel monopulse estimator that uses the inverse function of a MR curve for the Maximum Likelihood (ML)-based monopulse estimator. It is shown that the proposed method can extend the linear region of the MR curve, which in turn improve the estimation accuracy. Moreover, it's performance is compared with the ML-based method through simulation.

  • In this paper, we propose a performance enhancement method of the target tracking system for communication signal using the monopulse and the ${\alpha}{\beta}$ filter to keep the connection of the communication system between the airplane and the ground. We suggest the minimum distance measurement method for tracking error angle of the monopulse signal instead of the generally used method of MR(Monopulse Ratio) curve, and the ${\alpha}{\beta}$ filter with variable gain for enhancement of the tracking accuracy and the probability of re-tracking the monopulse signal under the disconnection of link. We show the performance enhancement of the proposed method of monopulse system using the measured MR Curve results of the prototype system. And also, the comparison of simulation results between the ${\alpha}{\beta}$ filter with variable gain and the ${\alpha}{\beta}$ filter with fixed gain shows the performance enhancement of the proposed ${\alpha}{\beta}$ filter. Using the proposed methods, we expect the enhanced performance of the existing target tracking system for communication signal only by changing the algorithm without hardware changes.

  • A three-channel radio frequency (RF) monopulse receiver using a data signal with a maximum transmission rate of 274 Mbps was designed. A monopulse receiver using a broadband communication signal was designed to operate in the Ku band, and it consists of a down-conversion module and a signal-processing module. To satisfy the performance of the proposed RF monopulse receiver, a signal-processing function less than the reception sensitivity for each transmission rate according to the adaptive transmission rate is required. To minimize signal reception and mutual frequency interference of various bandwidths, two RF filters were applied. To verify the satisfaction of system requirements, an AWR Corp. simulation tool was used.

  • GMTI (Ground Moving Target Indication) radar system can detect ground moving targets and can provide position and velocity information of each target. However, the azimuth position of target has some offset because of the hardware errors such as mechanical tolerances. In this case, an error occurs no matter how accurate the monopulse ratio is. In this paper, target position correction method in azimuth direction has been proposed. The received sum and difference signals of monopulse GMTI system are post-processed to correct the target azimuth angle error. This method is simple and adaptive for nonhomogeneous area because it can be implemented by using only software without any hardware modification or addition.

  • In this paper, we proposed an enhanced monopulse MIMO radar system for the tactical scenario where the ground receivers are connected wireless backhaul and closely spaced. By applying the ${\alpha}{\beta}$ filter to the conventional monopulse MIMO radar, we show that the localization performance can be improved significantly. We also propose an efficient localization algorithm for a system with lower rate feedback. Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the proposed scheme can improve the localization performance while reducing the feedback over conventional scheme.

  • Electromagnetic waves from the satellite may be utilized to direct the tracking antenna toward the satellite. We design and fabricate the feed appropriate to the monopulse tracking technique which derive angle-error information on the basis of a single pulse. The feed consists of five cavity-backed turnstile elements mounted on a common ground plane. The turnstile dipole are connected to a set of five quadrature hybrids which convert the dual linear polarization into dual circular polarization. The five feed outputs are then processed in the monopulse comparator which is constructed in microstrip for compactness.
