The purpose of this investigation was to prepare multicomponent monolithic Li-Al-Si gels of composition(mol%) 16.67 Li2O-16.67 Al2O3-66.67 SiO2 and to convert the gels to monolithic glass-ceramic at low temperature without melting. The hydrolysis, DTA, TGA, TMA, SEM, pore distribution, density and the activation energy for crystallization of the glass-ceramic formation with rawmaterials of which tetraethl orhosilicate of networkforming cation(Si) is partially hydrolyzed, aluminum isoproxide and lithium methoxide prepared by Li-metal react with methanol were studied. The results were as follows : 1) Monolithic gels which were added with additional water, resulting in a total water content 2.5 to 3.0 times the stoichiometric amount required to fully hydrolyze the alkoxides. 2) Specimens were dried to form crylinders 60mm in length and 40mm in diameter in about 800 hrs at 5$0^{\circ}C$. 3) $\beta$-eucryptite crystals and $\beta$-spodumene crystals were detected in samples heated above 75$0^{\circ}C$. 4) Within the temperature and range of 25-50$0^{\circ}C$ and 1,00$0^{\circ}C$ the thermal expansion coefficient for crystallized samples were shown as 2.6-5.7$\times$10-7/$^{\circ}C$ and 7.4-12.5$\times$10-7/$^{\circ}C$, respectively. 5) The activation energy for the crystal growth was 11.01kcal/mol at 794$^{\circ}C$ to 85$0^{\circ}C$.
Al2O3/20 vol%YAG composite containing equiaxed grains and Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite containing elongated grains were fabricated using Al2O3-Y2O3 composition and Al2O3-La2O3 composition, respectively, by hot-pressing. In order to investigate the influence of microstructural control of second phase on toughening effect of toughened ceramic composites, AE (acoustic emission) measurements have been coupled with fracture toughness experiments(SENB and SEPB method). A separation of the fracture toughness and analysis of toughening mechanism was possible using the AE technique. The fracture toughness of hot-pressed materials was estimated to be 3.2 MPam0.5 for monolithic alumina, 4.7 MPam0.5 for Al2O3/20 vol%YAG composite and 6.2 MPam0.5 for Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite. In monolithic Al2O3, toughening does not occur as a result of either microcracking or grain bridging, whereas, composites exhibit toughening effects by both microcracking in the frontal zone and gain bridging in the wake zone, resulting in an improvement of fracture toughness as compared with monolithic Al2O3. The fracture toughness of Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite is higher than that of Al2O3/20 vol%YAG composite. It may be attributed to the elongated microstructure of Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite, resulting relatively greater bridging effect.
In this study, the effects of catalyst and DCCA content were investigated in order to determine the optimum conditions of monolithic silica gel formation through sol-gel process. Formamide, oxalic acid, glycerol and dimethylformamide are used as DCCA. To observe the phenomena in drying and heat-treating of gels, we examined structural exchange of gels using FT-IR, TG-DTA and XRD. Monolithic gels were obtained by adding formamide and dimethylformamide as DCCA. According to the heat treatment schedule, silica glass is prepared by heat-treatment up to 1050$^{\circ}C$.
Monolithic refractory technology has been developed for RH vessels, with the purpose of reducing the total refractory cost. The technology includes the use of an improved monolithic refractory and microwave drying. The improved monolithic refractory was an alumina-spinel composition, of the type used in steel ladles, to which fine alumina was added to increase the density and corrosion resistance. The microwave drying method, previously developed and used to dry the monolithic lining in steel ladles, was modified for use in drying the dense, 500mm thick lining in RH vessels. This work has resulted in significant cost savings.
Purpose: The objective of this study is to find out physical properties and the flexural strength changed by the low temperature degradation of the block which is needed to make bio-prosthetic dentistry which is better than feldspar affiliated ceramic made by building up ceramic powder and also to apply this to the clinical use of zirconia monolithic all-ceramic crown. Methods: Flexural strength of each sample was evaluated before and after the Low Temperature Degradation, and physical properties of the Tetra Zirconia Block containing 3mol % was evaluated as well. The average and standard deviation of each experimental group were came out of the evaluation. Statistical package for social science 18.0 was used for statistics. Results: The average density of the monolithic all-ceramic crown was $6.0280{\pm}0.0147g/cm$, the relative density was 99.01 %. When the sample was sintered at $1480^{\circ}C$ the diameter of average particle was $396.62{\pm}33.71nm$. All the samples had no monolithic peak after XRD evaluation but only had tetragonal peak. There were statistically significant differences in the result of flexural strength of the samples evaluated after and before the low temperature degradation, the flexural strength before the low temperature degradation was $1747.40{\ss}{\acute{A}}$, at the temperature of $130^{\circ}C$ the flexural strength after the low temperature degradation was 1063.99MPa (p<0.001). There was statistically significant difference in the result of strength of 1020.07MPa after the low temperature degradation at the temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ (p<0.001). Conclusion: The block which was made for this evaluation possesses such an excellent strength among dental restorative materials that it is thought to have no problems to use for tetragonal zirconia polycrystal.
The monolithic dry gels of the Li2O-Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2 system were prepared by the sol-gel technique using metal alkoxides as starting materials to obtain monolithic glass-ceramics at low temperature without melting. Activation energy for the crystal growth of the gel with 6.05% TiO2, nucleating ageng, for the preparation of Li2O-Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2 system glass-ceramic was 101.14kcal/mol. As a result of the analysis of DTA & XRD, it was confirmed that the crytallization of Li2O-Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2 system glass-ceramic was the most efficient when 6.05% TiO2, nucleating agent, was added. $\beta$-eucryptite solid solution crystals and $\beta$-spodumene solid solution crystals were detected in the sample heat treated above 85$0^{\circ}C$. The sintered gel heat treated at 85$0^{\circ}C$ had the specific surface area of 185$m^2$/g, the pore volume of 0.19cc/g and the average pore radius of 20.8$\AA$. This shows that the sintered gel is also comparatively porous material. In temperature range of 25~85$0^{\circ}C$ thermal expansion coefficient of the specimen which was crystallized for 10hrs at 85$0^{\circ}C$ was 6.7$\times$10-7/$^{\circ}C$, which indicated that the crystallized specimen was turned out to be the glass-ceramic with low thermal expansion.
PURPOSE. The goal of this study was to evaluate the fracture resistances of various monolithic crowns fabricated by computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) with different thickness. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Test dies were fabricated as mandibular molar forms with occlusal reductions using CAD/CAM. With different occlusal thickness (1.0 or 1.5 mm), a polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (Enamic, EN), and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (Suprinity, SU and Celtra-Duo, CD) were used to fabricate molar crowns. Lithium disilicate (e.max CAD, EM) crowns (occlusal: 1.5 mm) were fabricated as control. Seventy crowns (n=10 per group) were bonded to abutments and stored in water for 24 hours. A universal testing machine was used to apply load to crown until fracture. The fractured specimens were examined with a scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS. The type of ceramics and the occlusal thickness showed a significant interaction. With a recommended thickness (1.5 mm), the SU revealed the mean load similar to the EM, higher compared with those of the EN and CD. The fracture loads in a reduced thickness (1.0 mm) were similar among the SU, CD, and EN. The mean fracture load of the SU and CD enhanced significantly when the occlusal thickness increased, whereas that of the EN did not. CONCLUSION. The fracture loads of monolithic crowns were differently influenced by the changes in occlusal thickness, depending on the type of ceramics. Within the limitations of this study, all the tested crowns withstood the physiological masticatory loads both at the recommended and reduced occlusal thickness.
PURPOSE. To assess the degree of conversion (DC) and light irradiance delivered to light-cured and dual-cured cements by application of different light sources through various types of monolithic computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. RelyX Ultimate Clicker light-cured and dual-cured resin cement specimens with 1.5-mm thicknesses (n=300, 10/group), were placed under four types of crystalline core structure (Vita Enamic, Vita Suprinity, GC Ceresmart, Degudent Prettau Anterior). The specimens were irradiated for 40 seconds with an LED Soft-Start or pulse-delay unit or 20 seconds with a QTH unit. DC ratios were determined by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) after curing the specimen at 1 day and 1 month. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test (for paired comparison) and the Kruskal-Wallis H test (for multiple comparison), with a significance level of P<.05. RESULTS. DC values were the highest for RelyX Ultimate Clicker light-cure specimens polymerized with the LED Soft-Start unit. The combination of the Vita Suprinity disc and RelyX Ultimate Clicker dual-cure resin cement yielded significantly higher values at both timepoints with all light units (all, P<.05). CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, we conclude that the DC of RelyX Ultimate Clicker dual-cure resin cement was improved significantly by the use of Vita Suprinity and the LED Soft-Start light unit. We strongly recommend the combined use of an LED light unit and dual-cure luting cement for monolithic ceramic restorations.
